PrinceWatercress plays Kid Niki: Radical Ninja (NES) - Part 1 of 4

I've heard of this game before, and I've definitely seen it in action. After seeing NintendoCapriSun play through this game, I decided to give this one a shot.

Here's the plot, courtesy of Wikipedia:

One day in Feudal Japan, Kid Niki, the most radical of ninjas, is training at his Ninja School. Suddenly, a passing bird is struck down by an arrow and lands at Niki's feet. Attached is a note explaining that Niki's girlfriend, Princess Margo, has been kidnapped by the evil Stone Wizard. With the cry of "Will help you!" Niki bursts through the wall of his school and sets off on his quest to save Margo.

Round 1: vs. Death Breath

Left and Right let you move around, Down lets you duck, B lets you attack and A lets you jump.

The blue ninjas will run towards you, the red ninjas will throw projectiles, the birds will fly in place and the pink guys will jump towards you if you get too close. Keep in mind that it's one hit and you're dead in this game.

The rounds are split into different sections, and I will refer to them for hidden areas.

Round 1-9 starts at the edge of a slight drop-off near a cloud. If you jump up and down, move Left and Right rapidly while mashing the attack button, you'll enter a hidden area. Niki flashes white if you've done it correctly, then you will teleport. Watch out for the jumping guys as you skip part of the stage.

A little bit past that warp point is a windmill. If you move the Control Pad all around, jump up and down and mash the attack button as before at the windmill, you'll get another shortcut to further into the stage, and here, you can get a bunch of scrolls and coins for point. If you used the previous warp point, however, you will not see this one.

The pools of water are bottomless pits; don't drop into them.

To beat Death Breath, you'll need to hit him when he is airborne. If you get too close, you will be blown back. Whenever you hit Death Breath, he will say "Ugh!", and your sword will be knocked away. You'll have to go back and get it. In case the sword is too high for your jump to reach it, jump towards it anyway. The game will let you have it back.

Once you hit Death Breath enough times, jump up and grab the bamboo pipe (it's not a spoon or a guitar; I've just now noticed it's a pipe) to go to the next round.

Round 2: vs. Spike

If you see a blue bird, back up and duck to avoid the salvo of birds that will dive forward. You can hit them all if you want, but you'll risk getting hit doing so. The last one will fly forward, then double back and fly up towards the top of the screen, Watch out for that.

Watch out for the guys throwing bombs and the explosions that the bombs create. Thankfully, there are patterns to the bomb throwing. The yellow guys drop down and go after you if you get too close.

If you climb up the first tree in Round 2-6, you'll find a bonus area. Jump around and keep attacking the air to find hidden scrolls. Hit the scrolls with your weapon to turn them into coins you can collect for a bunch of points. When you're done, go all the way to the left to return to the level and warp a little further ahead in the process.

The gold birds fly around in circles, and if you hit them, they turn into coins you can collect for points.

The second spire in Round 2-10 is a warp point. Keep jumping, attacking and moving Left and Right to trip the warp point. You'll find another hidden passage with more jumping guys.

To beat Spike, hit him when his mace is up. Sometimes, he will throw his mace at you; you'll want to jump over or duck under it, especially when it comes back to him. For some reason, if you stay all the way to the left throughout the battle, he's super easy.
