DuckTales 150 Percent Speed Run

The whole game at 150 percent speed. You're welcome.

brickroadbrickroad plays DuckTales - Part 6 of 6

...and now for the epic confrontation!

The Finale

You remember how to get through Transylvania, right? Just go through that fake wall again and go through the mirror on the right, then head to the boss like normal.

Don't worry about collecting any treasure, there isn't any here.

The boss here is Dracula Duck. Bounce off the bats he sends at you with the pogo attack, then pogo him on the head. He's really easy, but that's not the end when you beat him! You'll have to race Flintheart Glomgold to the treasure box at the top of the room so he won't replace you as the richest duck in the world!

When you make it to the top before Glomgold, you did it! Enjoy the ending!

brickroadbrickroad plays DuckTales - Part 5 of 6

This is the part where we go on the moon and do moon things.

The Moon

Oh, my. As the gravity allows for higher jumps on the moon's surface, you'll be taking on moon squids (I guess), robot moon ducks, aliens and more.

One of the chests contains the UFO Key. You'll need this to walk past the locked door and get the remote control, which allows Gizmo to blow up the wall that blocks your path to the underground when you leave the UFO and go right. If you go up from where the remote control is, you'll find Mrs. Beakley again. That's really nice if you're needing the health. Thanks, game.

The top of the UFO leads you to a hidden treasure if you can make it all the way to the right. Inside the chest is a golden tile (or something) that gives you another cool million.

The boss here is a rat. He'll either run to one of the lower corners or jump to one of the higher corners. He has no set pattern, so start pogoing and do this the entire time. After five hits with the pogo attack, you'll get a piece of green cheese worth one million. At over $2.5 million, this is probably the biggest haul in the game.

When you beat all five lands, you'll have to return to Transylvania to get all your treasures back! A new challenger...comes!

brickroadbrickroad plays DuckTales - Part 4 of 6

We now go through the Amazon, which not only has a toll booth near the end of the stage...but also a warp!

The Amazon

Despite the cheery music here, this level can be annoying, so don't be surprised if you choose this as your first level because it's the first choice and you get slightly frustrated.

Hit every tree trunk at ground level with the golf swing, as they all contain diamonds.

The snakes can extend their heads upwards when you get close, which can make hitting them with the pogo attack a pain.

When you go underground, pogo up to the top of the statue and pogo again to the left. You'll find a secret area with some treasure and ice cream. From there, go back to the right side of the room, pogo to the left and you'll find another secret area. Here, you can find some more treasure as well as an extra life.

The bees move around in a sine wave pattern. Thankfully, once you have the speed and the pattern down, they're not a big deal.

If you jump left from where Launchpad is (don't take that ride!) you'll find another secret area.

The treasure box near the beginning of the section with the spear-throwing guys takes you to a secret vine that lets you bypass the statue that wants you to pay $300000 of the money you've collected to pass. Regardless of which path you choose, you'll have to face the statue boss anyway.

This boss is really easy. Hit him when he's on the ground and watch out for that jump of his. Five hits scores you a million-dollar scepter.

DuckTales Intro and Outro

Because I like both.

brickroadbrickroad plays DuckTales - Part 3 of 6

We go to the African Mines, but sadly, we don't learn anything about how to mine an Africa.

African Mines

When you go to the African Mines, you'll find out that you'll need a key to go in. You'll be taken back to Transylvania. From there, enter the first mirror you see and open the chest to get the skeleton key for the mine. You'll then return to the world select screen, so go to the African Mines again.

The slugs are vanilla enemies, the bats try to dive into you as soon as you pass by, and the man-eating plants are basically invulnerable to your pogo attack. The bats can be taken care of with a golf swing to a nearby rock (assuming the rock connects), but you can wait for them to dive down, move out of the way so they miss and pogo them from there.

Look around for secret passageways and fake walls. You'll be able to find quite a few extra lives if you know where to look.

When you whack one of the rocks into that giant boulder, move out of the way!

Somewhere in the mine, you can find Mrs. Beakley, who will throw four ice creams your way so you can refill your health. The pit there might seem endless, but jump all the way to the right and use your pogo attack, and you'll bounce off four green guys who jump right out of the pit and act as a bridge. Once you make it past this pit, break the chest you find open and take the magic ring. You'll get an extra million.

The boss is the King of the Terra-Firmians. Wait for him to roll around the room and move out of his way, then pogo him on the head. When you beat him, you'll get a gemstone that's worth a million dollars. Congratulations, you just robbed $2.2 million out of an abandoned mine shaft.

brickroadbrickroad plays DuckTales - Part 2 of 6

We go to Translyvania, deal with the undead, and ride minecarts.

Transylvania

This level can be very confusing unless you know where to go.

The rocks can be destroyed with the pogo attack, as can the enemies: skeleton ducks (which can only be hit when they're in motion) and the heads of suits of armor. Ghosts are hard to avoid and somewhat track your horizontal position.

At the beginning of the level, you'll meet Webby, who tells you that Huey has been kidnapped.

Whenever you see a coffin, hit it with your gold swing. You may be able to find some treasure. Watch out, as you may find enemies, too! Be sure to use it on the suits of armor as well. Either the head will fall off or the head will change into a treasure box.

The rope you see after meeting Webby will take you to Huey when you go left. Take out the Beagle Boy and talk to Huey, and he'll tell you about the "illusion wall" in the house. Turns out there's a fake wall in this level.

The mummies are restricted by the ball and chain locked on them. Take them out of their misery by using the golf-swing on the ball to get them out of your way. You can also pogo onto their heads if you can.

Keep going right in the same area with Huey and the mummies and you'll find a fake wall. The chest inside has another star, which will bring your HP to the maximum of five hits. Don't even bother golf swinging the coffins here, as both of them have ghosts.

The rope just before the fake wall area takes you to a seemingly unattainable chest in mid-air. Hit the rock to the left of it with the golf swing and it'll rocket into the chest, giving you an extra life. The mirror to the right takes you to the first mine cart segment. Duck to avoid any low-hanging ceilings. Jumping out is simple: just hold the direction you want to go and jump.

There's another fake wall below the mirror that takes you to another room with two mirrors. This is the "illusion wall" that Huey must have been talking about. The mirror to the left takes you back to the beginning, while the one to the right takes you to the boss.

The boss here is Magica de Spell. She turns herself into a bird, then drops down and tries to zap you with lightning bolts. When she stops before she drops down, be ready to jump and hit her with the pogo attack. Sometimes, she'll fly low enough for you to pogo her without having to wait.

When you beat her, you'll get a gold coin and another cool million.

brickroadbrickroad plays DuckTales - Part 1 of 6

Another blog, another Capcom game! Fortunately for us, it's one of those Disney licenses done right!

The Himalayas

There are five levels you can choose from at the start. We're starting with The Himalayas because that's exactly what brick is doing.

To attack enemies, press Down while in mid-air so you can land on them cane-first. Then, take the treasure they leave behind! You'll need to get money to get the best ending! You also have a golf swing that you can use to push blocks around as well as break some of them. Just move into a block, hold forward on the D-Pad and press B. That's all there is to it.

When you attack or move into certain spots, you'll find some hidden treasure chests. Hit them to break them open and find even more treasure!

Scrooge McDuck dolls give you extra lives. You won't find them a lot, but when you find one, go for it.

Collect ice cream and other foods to refill your life. You have three hits, so be careful!

As you move through the worlds, you'll meet other characters from the show. They give you hints as to what to do in the level. They don't say very much, mostly because they're relegated to three lines of screen space (usually).

Once you're underground, watch out for icicles that fall from the ceiling. As you move around, you'll find that using the pogo stick attack also helps you jump higher than usual. You'll definitely want to make use of that, since you're going to be using it the entire game.

When you find Bubba the Caveman encased in ice, move the steel can to the left wall so you can pogo into him. He'll open up a wall which contains a chest. Inside is a little starburst shaped item, which gives you an additional hit on your health meter.

There are a few secret areas here. One of them involves pogoing into the air and jumping through the gaps in the ceiling, while another involves pogoing left off of a Beagle Boy and pushing those steel cans away. The first one contains an extra life if you jump all the way to the left.

The hockey ducks knock blocks into you, with their hockey swing acting like your golf swing. After that, they're pretty easy to deal with. The spiders are just annoying and get in your path unless you jump low, and the bunnies are just vanilla enemies. Ditto for the Beagle Boys.

Move out of the way of the boulder as you climb the rope.

If you talk to Launchpad, you can go back to Duckberg and choose another level. If you select Yes and you have a 7 in the ten-thousandth place of the amount of money you've collected in the level, you'll get a bonus level before you return to the level select screen. Here, you'll be moving to the left as Gyro Gearloose flies in that direction and drops gems for you to pick up. You won't get a lot of money if you collect all the gems, but it's still something.

The boss here is the yeti. To beat him, hit him in the head with the pogo attack and avoid the snowballs that come down when he punches the wall before hitting him again. He's pretty easy. He'll go down after five hits, like all the other bosses.

When you beat a boss, you'll get a treasure chest. Open it up and you'll find a treasure unique to that level - in this case, it's a crown that's worth $1000000. You'll also get money for every second you have left on the clock.

Tool Assisted Speedrun by Sp00ky in 32:21

Bam.

This uses the Japanese version of the game, by the way.

frenzymatt (Mateus Lopes) plays The Ninja Warriors Again - Hard, No Damage - Final Stage

Finally, we get to see that pointy-eared gremlin die. Again.

Thoughts on this video

Is there really anything else for me to say?

Final Stage

Go to the right at the beginning, because you can't go left unless you want harder enemies. Derp. Beat everyone up and you'll go to the next section.

At the end of the second section, you'll fight four big guys at the same time. If you stay at the right side of the screen here and combo into your blaster, you shouldn't have a hard time at all.

The third section is a control center with a jet in the background. After fighting a bunch of enemies, you'll fight two burly guys and two large robots. Take down the large robots first by throwing the burly guys into the robots.

After beating those guys up, you'll be doing some more fighting before you fight another clone of the Stage 1 boss.

Once you finish him off, you'll be in the next section...and so will Benglar! He'll run away again, so go towards the crate and destroy it for a full power-up. You'd better take it before you destroy the last normal enemy, otherwise you won't be able to have access to it.

The boss battle is Benglar. He'll be in some sort of battle mechanism in the forthcoming elevator. Throw the enemies into him, and watch out for the lasers that come out of the ceiling panels next to him. There are three on each side, and you can easily tell where the lasers are coming from. It's always center, right, left. After three laser attacks, all six lasers will fire at the same time, so either stay right under him or walk all the way to the nearest wall before they all fire!

When you knock Banglar off of that machine, you did it! Enjoy the ending, which I'd rather not spoil for you!

frenzymatt (Mateus Lopes) plays The Ninja Warriors Again - Hard, No Damage - Stage 7

The stage is long in the teeth, but frenzymatt makes up for it by making mincemeat out of the seventh boss.

Thoughts on this video

This is a very, very, very long stage.

Enemies of all kinds come to stop frenzymatt at the door, but once again our hero takes on all comers! Whether it be hordes of robots, big shogun-sized guys, aliens, or even soldiers with knives, they all die! Yeah!

Also, frenzymatt makes the boss here look really easy. It's all in the advanced throws.

- PrinceWatercress, 4/26/2012

Stage 7

Apparently the red and blue guys also have a white-clad cousin. At least he looks interesting, since he almost blends into the snow and looks like one of those guys from the Battle of Hoth.

You'll also meet a white version of the robot. Nothing much interesting here, except you have two motorcycles you can throw at it to make destroying it easier. By this point, you'll see missiles falling from the sky...again. It won't be long until you come across another base, where you'll fight off some more robots as well as more big guys.

In the next section, you'll meet a new enemy: some red-headed alien people in yellow spandex. As you fight them, they'll turn a bright white, which keeps you from putting them in a throw attack. They'll try to knee you and rush straight at you with a sliding kick.

You'll then fight four robots at once afterwards. Throw one into the other for your best bet at survival. If you can somehow get them to accidentally destroy one another with their lasers, that's great.

After taking down the four robots, you'll be making your way onto a freight elevator, where you'll be fighting enemies on your way through the horizontal shaft. You'll then be making your way towards another elevator, where you'll face some more enemies (including a few purple-jumpsuited aliens) and a big ugly green guy in a mechanical onesie who serves as the next boss.

He'll jump onto the roof of the escalator and bring it all the way down. If you stand under him, you'll be primed to get the first strike on the guy. He has a two-punches-followed-by-a-lunging low kick combo, an extending arm, and a nasty standing low spin kick. If you can fill up your blaster, do that and use it on everyone on screen. The more damage you can do on this guy at any possible time, the better. Of course, if he's blocking a lot of your attacks, don't be afraid to combo into your blaster.

Your air attacks will work quite well here, as well, since he'll try to move and/or jump towards you.

He sends a lot of henchmen after you, including the robots and the aliens. Throw people into him, combo into your blaster, use your full screen attack...whatever you can. Because this guy's nuts.

frenzymatt (Mateus Lopes) plays The Ninja Warriors Again - Hard, No Damage - Stage 6

This is a relatively short stage. At least the two bosses share the same health bar.

Thoughts on this video

There's not really much to say, except that I'm only sad that he forgot to destroy one of the statues in the background.

- PrinceWatercress, 4/26/2012

Stage 6

Yes, you can destroy the statuettes in the background. It takes a bit of doing, but it can be done.

You'll meet the small white robots here again. When you reach the end of the stage, you'll meet up with two robots...one is the gold one you've been seeing throughout the game, while the second one is a crimson recolor of the gold one.

This section isn't very long at all...you'll fight the bosses soon afterwards. You'll see Benglar, but he'll run away and leave you with two bodyguards of his. They look like the first boss, but they have an even more robotic appearance to them. One is blue, the other is gold.

If these guys aren't jumping around and trying to punch you, they'll usually try to surround you at any given time. Comboing into your blaster power-up is a must here, since the chances are about 50-50 that they'll block your regular combo attack. They also have a nasty slide attack that can not only take you off guard but also works as an embarassing way of taking your blaster power all the way down if you get hit while it's less than full. If you can stay at one side of the screen and fend these two guys off, you'll have a much easier time as they won't be able to get behind you.

frenzymatt (Mateus Lopes) plays The Ninja Warriors Again - Hard, No Damage - Stage 5

We go into a skyscraper and find a temple inside it. One thing's for sure: I love the music here!

Thoughts on this video

Once again, frenzymatt makes the enemies look really easy...not to mention the entire level.

Even when he's surrounded by enemies in the temple area, the enemies still don't have a chance to strike.

I actually feel bad for the boss this time around. frenzymatt adeptly ducking over that flying kick is just comedy gold.

- PrinceWatercress, 4/26/2012

Stage 5

You'll be fighting some more guys at the beginning of the stage, until you reach the door to the inside of this nice house. When this happens, you'll fight a white version of the first boss with a pink mohawk. Yes, he blows up when he explodes. Once again, throw, throw, throw.

You'll also meet a small, white robot that tries to shoot at you, but if you keep throwing other enemies at it, you shouldn't have much of a problem.

The second section is another floor of this building. You'll soon enter what looks like a conservative Japanese house, complete with rice paper walls. You'll be fighting a lot of those little guys with the claws as well as what looks like kabuki-masked guys in white bathrobes before you meet the boss: some martial artist.

He teleports behind you a lot, and he even sends two big guys to back him up. Thankfully, their higher amounts of HP lets you use them as weapons a little more often. When he glows red, watch the floor and stay away from the green geysers of fire that come up out of it. If you can get between them shortly after they show up, you should be okay.

Don't expect to combo him, since he'll block your attacks after about two punches. Use dashing shoulder rams, dashing kicks and also combo into your blaster in order to get the jump on this guy.

Ninja Warriors Again - The Intro

Because it's freakin' epic.

Thursday, July 24, 2014

frenzymatt (Mateus Lopes) plays The Ninja Warriors Again - Hard, No Damage - Stage 4

We get to look at that really nice sunset background as frenzymatt tears stuff up.

Thoughts on this video

Amazing how he makes all those missiles that drop down look almost nonexistent.

When he makes it to the part where the machine gunner in the chopper shows up, he uses the jetpack to hover the bullets like it's all child's play.

Also, the boss never gets a chance to call for backup and send that superlaser at our hero. Poor guy.

- PrinceWatercress, 4/25/2012

Stage 4

When you finally make it back out into the open, you'll see missiles coming down from the sky. Avoid the missiles and get out of there as soon as possible. Once you're back indoors, a tank comes out along with a robot and an endless supply of soldiers. Use these soldiers to take care of the robot.

You'll then be in an indoor parking lot in the city. You'll see a helicopter, but it won't be a menace to you yet. You'll also see a big guy wearing pink that's just like the guy you saw in Stage 2. In Nintendo games, wearing pink makes you more menacing. I'm still trying to figure out why. Midway through this section, the helicopter comes back. Duck in front of the car and the helicopter's machine gun won't be able to get you. You'll then be fighting bad guys and avoiding the helicopter's firepower at the same time. If you alternate between the left and right sides of the screen here, you won't have to worry about the gun.

After this, you'll fight two more guys in white suits, followed by a brown palette swap of the same guy. Fun.

The boss here is some sort of Russian guy with a purple beret and a cane. That black thing he's carrying is a wireless phone. He'll run away and have soldiers come after you. Throw the soldiers at him, since it's pretty hard to get close to this guy without being whacked three times with a wooden cane (unless you block, which strangely works against a wooden cane). He'll also leap on top of the gray wall on the foreground. Sometimes he'll stand on it and talk into his phone. When that happens, a red laser will be pointed at the ground. Run away from it - it sends a superlaser at you that can knock you down and prove very annoying.

frenzymatt (Mateus Lopes) plays The Ninja Warriors Again - Hard, No Damage - Stage 3

Subway. Of Death. Again.

Thoughts on this video

Once again, frenzymatt pulls no punches as he tears through the enemies like they're nothing. He uses the screen-clearing bomb attack a couple of times to save himself and take everyone down at the same time.

When he fights the boss, he makes it look easy - until the boss turns invisible. Then the invisibility fails to help the boss as frenzymatt times his attacks perfectly, attacking the boss before he can get any sort of effort in. It just boggles the mind.

- PrinceWatercress, 4/25/2012

Stage 3

No sooner do you start the stage that you'll face a new enemy. He looks like Ken from Street Fighter, except he has spiky shoulder pads, he breathes fire and he can teleport. Fun. You'll also have to fight four kabuki guys at the same time at the end of this section.

In the second section, you'll face another huge dude (he's a new guy) and two more kabuki guys. If you throw the kabuki guys into the big guy, the big guy isn't much of a problem. You'll then face two clawed midgets followed by a red guy with a gun. Not much else here.

As you make your way through the third section, you'll face guys in white suits that can throw and sweep kick you. Why in the world do they look like Neo from The Matrix? Why?!?

The boss is some sort of weird skeletal guy. He'll climb on the video wall and toss bombs at you, but if you stay right in front of him, they'll miss. Wait for the bombs to explode before coming after him. He also turns invisible for a short while, but thankfully you can still see him (kind of). Dashing kicks work best here, yet again, since he has the tendency to block your punches. Also, using weaker forms of your blaster attack also works well.

Wednesday, July 23, 2014

frenzymatt (Mateus Lopes) plays The Ninja Warriors Again - Hard, No Damage - Stage 2

The adventure continues as frenzymatt tears through giant robots!

Thoughts on this video

frenzymatt made some really quick work of the robots that you can only punch from the back if you want to defeat them without throws. As a matter of fact, the Ninja is hitting as many enemies as it can in one go.

Also, he never lets up on the chainsaw guy. I'm pretty sure he's not going to let up on the rest of these bosses, either.

- PrinceWatercress, 4/25/2012

Stage 2

Remember, if you're surrounded by enemies, use the bomb. It slowly refills on its own as you beat up one enemy as a time, so use it when you need to.

The kabuki guys take multiple hits, but they just stab at you like the soldier guys. Big whoop. Also, one of the taller soldier guys looks like Gordon Freeman. I'm not kidding.

The robot in the middle of the stage either has to be thrown or have something thrown into it. Punches are ineffective. It also shoots a laser at the ground, so don't let it stand around doing nothing. If you can somehow get behind it, you'll be able to hit it with your combo from behind.

In the second section, you'll see blue variations of the red gun guys. They're the same as the red ones, they just take more damage. Also, wait for the rotor blades to stop spinning before you walk through them, otherwise you'll take a lot of damage.

The boss here is a guy with a shogun's helmet, cargo pants, an apron and a chainsaw. Be sure to duck whenever you can, and punch at him whenever you're in range. Throwing enemies into him and dashing kicks work too.

frenzymatt (Mateus Lopes) plays The Ninja Warriors Again - Hard, No Damage - Stage 1

Guess what? I'm covering this game again!

Also, more copying and pasting, because I wanna see this game again.

Anyway, the game came out in Japan as The Ninja Warriors Again, and it's a chronological sequel to the arcade original. They took the "Again" out when they released it here. In Europe, the game was called Ninja Warriors: The New Generation.

It should also be noted that in the Japanese version, there's green blood! Sadly, it was replaced with comic-style impact balloons in the American version. Boo, NoA!

Thoughts on this video

Well, this is short and sweet. Funny how he destroys everything in the background whenever possible, making the Ninja look like a one-robot army.

- PrinceWatercress, 4/25/2012

Stage 1

That robot is too tall and too heavy to be a ninja...or is it?

Anyway, you'll be running to the right and destroying everything in your way. You'll be punching. You'll be slicing. You'll be throwing. You'll be blocking. You'll be duck walking. You'll be flying (somewhat) in the air and kicking people on the way down. And nunchaku will be tossed around. Yes. Nunchaku.

Halfway through the level, you'll be seeing missiles rising in the background and falling from the sky on your side of the city. Remember where they are and walk around accordingly. They fall at regular intervals, but they can immediately knock you down, which can be annoying.

The soldier guys are nothing, but the guys with the claws jump around a lot. Punch them whenever you can, even if you can get only one shot on them at a time while doing so. Throwing other enemies into him works great, but the best way to take him down is with a ducking combo.

The red guys with the guns aren't really good shots. Just like in the original, you can simply duck (and duck walk) past their shots and get away undamaged.

The boss here is some huge robot guy with a red mohawk that's taller than even the Ninja. Since he'll always block your attacks, throw those soldiers that show up at him. Using a dashing kick also works, since he can't block that.

The 100-Star Trick

Here's an easy one. Find the fourth green ball in Gambit's first stage, then keep jumping over it without actually collecting it. You can get all the 1-ups you want!

Also, some guy actually made the game's main theme better. I kid you not.

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 14 of 14

Finally, the craptacularness ends!

Spider-Man

*sigh*

Make your way down, collect all the abundant hearts as you take out all the enemies in your way, blah, blah, blah.

Arcade

Arcade's piloting a giant robot. Guess what? It's easy.

Shoot it in the head multiple times. When the green force fields disappear for a brief moment around the X-Men, they'll be able to aid you by shooting at the boss once...and only once.

As you fight this thing, get away when it quickly accelerates towards you, and watch out for the bombs it shoots out of those cannon arms.

After enough damage, its tank treads and cannon arms will come off, and the robot will now bounce around while shooting four bombs around the room. Stick to the wall at one of the upper corners of the room and keep shooting webs at the robot's head.

The robot has one more form: it's a smaller one that moves across the floor. Once again, shoot it in the head and avoid the bombs. When you destroy the robots, you'll be able to fully restore your health...but now you'll have to deal with Arcade himself!

Actually, it's him as well as several clones. They'll all go down in a few shots, and when you get rid of them all (which can easily be done by just staying at the left side of the room), the wreckage of the robot explodes.

Well, it turns out these were all clones of Arcade...which leads to the very crappy ending. Enjoy.

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 13 of 14

We play as all the characters one last time...

Cyclops

If you were expecting these "third stages" to be even harder, you're in for a treat: these stages are amazingly easy. For Cyclops, just make your way to the end and take out enemies on your way. This level is amazingly short, so don't worry about dying if you're actually giving the stage a shot.

When you make it to the end, a green light will weaken Cyclops. This is part of the storyline, so don't worry about losing a life for no reason.

Wolverine

This is yet another easy level.

I should mention that each X-Man's level has all the enemies from their previous two obstacle courses of pain and suffering.

Gambit

This one is just as easy, but you'll be making some jumps that are difficult only because they're either completely awkward of happen to be leaps of faith that the game expects you to know about. I hate this stage just from looking at it. At least it's mercifully short.

Storm

OH SWEET JESUS IT'S NOT A SWIMMING LEVEL

Anyway, Storm can shoot into the air like Cyclops. She has two whirlwinds that she can summon whenever necessary (which work like Gambit's special attack), and her jump is really, really high.

Other than that, there's only one type of enemy, and he's really easy: just some soldier with a machine gun or mortar rocket. Fun.

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 12 of 14

Hey, whaddya know? We saved something different for last!

Wolverine Stage 2

The stage begins with Juggernaut chasing Wolverine. If you're thinking this is some sort of time attack stage where you have to reach the end before Juggernaut kills you, you're wrong. You actually have to take him out.

If you don't hit Juggernaut for a while, he'll speed up. Simply touching him takes out a lot of health, making it way too easy to die as soon as he catches up with you.

Cut the ropes holding the weights and anvils to send them to the floor. When Juggernaut hits them, he takes damage. You'll also be swatting at him with your claws quite a lot before you finally take him down.

3:07 - This is where the video finally lets loose, complete with "You Got The Touch." Beware, because there is a lot of frustration with this, as you'll be fighting Juggernaut and platforming at the same time.

When you finally beat this horrendously difficult stage (and all the other Second Stages), it's on to the Transitional Levels!

Gambit Stage 2

The beginning of this stage is a vertical, auto-scrolling level. Destroy blocks that are in your way and stay on the move as the floor rises you to the top. It's like the Castle Crush level in Donkey Kong Country 2, except there's very little fun involved.

The boss here is some woman in black that looks a lot like the Dark Queen from Battletoads. Watch out for her when she shoots a fireball out of her eyes, and throw cards into her arms. There are two decks of cards that you can grab, but when you grab those and run out, you're basically screwed.

She also shoots green lasers out of her fingers, so be careful as you make your way to the other side of the room.

When you take out both arms, all you have left is the head and the fireballs that come out of it. Stay on the move as you take it out, so you won't have to take unnecessary damage. The best way to take it out is throwing a card at the head from underneath, then jumping to the platform at one side of the room and making another throw from there. Once again, be careful about the fireballs.

If you couldn't tell earlier, it's another robot duplicate. Fun.

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 10 of 14

Hey, look, guys! Another swimming stage that proves that Storm is completely underutilized!

Storm Stage 2

You've got a new enemy here: a flying green clam with spikes that goes around in circles and fires at you.

The boss here is a huge machine with a lot of spheres. Take out the spheres, and raise the water level so you can take out more. Always keep your oxygen to as close to maximum as you can. You'll have to wait until the spheres light up before you can hit them.

Once you beat this level, the worst is finally over...or is it?

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 9 of 14

We now watch a video that's four-and-a-half minutes long.

Guess what? The boss battle here borders on monotony.

Cyclops Stage 2
(continued)

The final boss is a giant Sentinel. Just keep shooting at its upper torso with the optic blast to destroy it.

Avoid the bombs that drop when it extends its arm. When you cause some damage, you'll cause some wear and tear to appear on the Sentinel and you won't have to worry about this attack anymore.

The missile seems like it tracks, but it doesn't. It can also be destroyed easily with an optic blast.

The green balls that come out of its head track you. If you stay in one place until they all shoot out, they won't do that.

The yellow fireballs go where you're standing the moment it fires. Moving around will cause it to be inaccurate (unless, of course, you move right into it).

The Sentinel will also fly around to the left side and back to the right side just to be annoying. Just stay at the center of the screen if it does that.

After some more damage, you'll blow its head off. It doesn't seem to change the fight any, but it won't be long before you completely destroy it.

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 8 of 14

Yay, more chances to be electrocuted on the mine cart path! I can barely contain myself!

Cyclops Stage 2

Yep, this is more of the same from Cyclops Stage 1.

The nastiest thing about this stage is that the gear enemies seem to spawn forever. You take one down, another one takes its place. Sometimes you'll be dealing with two at once and have a few other enemies on the screen while you're doing it.

The robot soldier in the plane is a new enemy. Its principal attack is a bomb that it sends down at you. If it hits you, it'll do quite a bit of damage. If you run past it, though, the bomb is more likely to miss you than not.

Midway through the stage, you'll have to contend with another Sentinel. Beat him the same way you did in Cyclops Stage 1.

How can LJN present any of this stuff PROUDLY?

I mean, look at this!

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 7 of 14

Well, since we've completed everybody's first stage, let's go for all the second stages!

Spider-Man Stage 2

Since you've already played Spider-Man's first stage, you know what to expect here: having to swing across the ceilings and climb walls in a maze-like environment in the way that the game wants you to.

Once again, it's shoot, avoid, shoot, avoid, double shoot against those robots throwing the metal shards at you.

The ceiling robots shoot out orbs that follow you around. Take them out before taking out the robots themselves.

Pay attention to the rain in the foreground. When it goes left, the wind will blow you left when you're in mid-air. When it goes right...yeah, you get the picture. It's a pain in the butt unless you can time when it happens to a science and you can use the wind in your favor.

The boss here is the tag team of Carnage and Rhino. Why LJN decided to put them together as one boss, I have no idea. Focus all your attacks on Carnage by staying on the right-hand wall and shooting at Carnage while keeping an eye out for Rhino, as he'll knock you off the wall unless you're quick about it. Avoid Carnage's bullets (which happen to be pieces of him), and when you beat him, the Carnage symbiote seperates from him and he turns into a naked man.

For the love of God and all that is holy, how did this get past Nintendo's censors?

Anyway, this leaves you to beating Rhino. To do this, you'll have to...web-swing into him. How are you supposed to figure this out? I certainly don't know!

Also, Rhino explodes, but we get the real Carnage. What the hell.

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 6 of 14

In this edition of the PrinceWatercress Blog, we play the first Storm stage, and if you were expecting to fly around and destroy giant robots with tornadoes and lightning or something, guess what? Your expectations are about to be crushed in the most brutal way that a video game can crush them.

Storm Stage 1

We're playing as Storm...and we're swimming. What the crap?

Shoot the pump at the beginning of the level. It's that machine with the little pink wheel that you would turn with your hands in real life with your lightning. This will raise the water level.

When you go underwater, the bubbles on the oxygen meter will get smaller and smaller until you have none at all. Whenever you get hit, you lose oxygen. To replenish it, you'll have to make it to the surface and stay there for a few seconds so it can completely refill. Yes, this is your life meter. Wonderful. Also, if you see any bubbles underwater, move into them and you'll refill a little bit of your air. You'll see them come out of the ground at times, so keep a look out.

You'll be in a maze where you'll have to destroy those pumps to raise the water level and you'll have to destroy walls that block your path in order to move on.

Whenever you find a giant clam, destroy it to get two pearls to come out. Grab these pearls for points. You'll also find bubbles come out of these things after you take a clam out. You can also find other power-ups, such as the whirlwind and the eight-way lightning attack.

The gold icon that looks like a compass is your eight-way lightning attack. Use it and you'll shoot lightning in (what else?) eight directions. It only works once, though.

The whirlwind is pretty self-explanatory - it sends out a whirlwind that takes out anything in front of Storm, and it can also protect you from enemy fire. You can get one from the pearls in the clams.

The enemies here are pretty easy: you have squids that shoot at you, scuba divers, mines that are really annoying and can block you from the surface of the water, and electric barriers that take too long to briefly turn off so you can go on your merry way. Be very careful near these barriers, because when you stand still underwater, you slowly start rising to the surface.

If you're stuck, you probably missed a pump...and you're probably going to have to waste a lot of oxygen just to find it and get back to the surface. Thanks for being a jerk, game.

The boss is just a stupid orb moving up and down a wall. Just make your way to the surface so that you can refill your air every single time you get hit, and just shoot at it. After several shots, you've defeated it. What's really weird is that you don't know it's the boss until after you beat it and go to the right afterwards. What a disappointment.

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 5 of 14

Amazingly, this is one of the better stages...if you don't mind dying a lot.

Cyclops Stage 1

As Cyclops, you can punch, kick and shoot. You can also aim upwards and downwards with the optic blast. Nice.

The little red gems give you a few points. They also refill a sliver of your health, so save them when you need them. I guess they're ruby quartz?

The mine carts will only follow the brown path on the ground, and will come to a dead stop when you reach either end of that path. Never land on that path with your feet, as you will get shocked and instantly lose a life.

The soldiers are just your everyday vanilla enemy. Just hit them with optic blasts from a distance (or from above, since some are on platforms).

The gears fly around in a square-like pattern and shoot at you when you're close. Thankfully, it takes just one optic blast to take a gear out.

The stalactites fall when you come a certain distance close to them, so be careful. They can't kill you, but they can still be annoying when you don't know they're there. You can take them out with an optic blast, though.

Some of the platforms are actually crushing ceilings, and you won't know that they are until it's too late and you've already lost a life. Unless you know where you are in the level, be careful.

The tiny flashing circles on the mine cart paths are explosives. Take them out with an optic blast before they do the same to you!

Hit the yellow cave people with your kick, so you can hit them from a distance. Your optic blast just bounces off of them. That's no good. They can also hit you with rocks, so duck until they're in boot range.

Whenever you see a stationary mine cart full of pink crystals, shoot at it until it's destroyed. You'll refill some of your life.

The big red gem refills some health and also turns your red health bar to orange for a brief amount of time. I guess that means invincibility? I dunno.

The boss here is a Sentinel. Jump over the bullet, and when its arm is raised, duck and shoot to avoid the pink lasers. Stay on the move a little bit when it's flying around, which is when you'll be able to get more shots on it with the optic blast.

When it blows up, jump across the platforms and go all the way to the right. Epic win at a game with bad controls!

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 4 of 14

00620161: "I swear to god that me and my brother broke this game because we had no way of beating that goddamn ball. That ball was the bane of my existence."

Holy fuck, LJN sure succeeded at pissing some kids off back in the day.

Gambit Stage 1

As you make your way through the stage, you'll have a giant spiked ball chasing after you. Strangely, the video doesn't show that you can stop the ball with a few cards...but how the hell are you supposed to figure that out?

Unlike the other characters we've seen so far, Gambit has a different power meter for how much damage he can take. It'll be below the score. He also has another meter for the amount of playing cards he has. You can collect decks of playing cards to replace a large amount of your ammo, but if throw a card, you can pick it up while it's still on-screen for a few seconds. Just have it hit an enemy and you'll be able to pick that card up again. Doing this can minimize wasted ammo at times.

You also have super cards that sends out fireballs that take out anything in their vicinity.

As you make your way to the end, you'll be dealing with pawns, knights, flying clowns, robots, spheres and other enemies.

The stars give you an extra life when you collect 100 of them. Finally, something that makes sense.

The "B" icon refills a lot of your health and cards. You're better off grabbing this, since it can definitely save your life.

Don't grab the health in the maze unless you've destroyed the ball, since there's a possibility that you won't be able to get it and get back on track in time before getting hit by the ball.

When you reach the end of the stage, the spiked ball will be stopped by the floor and ceiling. You'll then fight a King of Spades card with an evil face that wants you dead.

Throw cards at it while dealing with the enemies. When the boss is red, you won't be able to hit him, and he'll also start shooting straight at you. Also, be sure to avoid the boss's eight-way shot.

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 3 of 14

WELL DONE MORON!

Wolverine Level 1

Believe it or not, you can switch from no claws to having claws at the touch of a button. Turns out, this was a couple of months before X-Men on Genesis. Take that, Angry Video Game Nerd!

However, there is something good about this ability. When your claws are sheathed, you'll be able to slowly regenerate your health. Pretty nice, since Wolverine: Adamantium Rage is the only game I can think of where you can do that. At least LJN got something right.

The big, fat clowns in green stay away from you and throws pies at you. His laugh sounds like pitch-shifted variations of a chainsaw...which I hated immediately due to how annoying they are. It's more than likely that you're going to take one hit against these guys whenever you come in contact with one.

The jack-in-the-box mugsters can only shoot downwards. Take them out in two strikes with the claws.

If you see tears in the wall, attack that wall. You'll be able to open a new path and either continue or find some power-ups.

The airplanes drop bombs. Just avoid the bombs (as well as the resulting explosions) and strike the planes.

The toy soldiers turn around and come at you when you're nearby, and the clowns with the top-like bottoms are not only faster, they also produce a really annoying laugh that sounds like higher pitch-shifted variations of a chainsaw...which I alos hated immediately.

The large clown shooting acid (which smokes when the droplets hit the ground) out of that giant pistol can't really be taken out. Just move past it and move on, which is pretty easy to do, anyway.

The boss here is Apocalypse. Be sure to sheathe your claws and stand there for a while until you reach full health before you take him on. Just hit him and run away. You'll have to time it right so you can hit him and get away before Apocalypse hits you with that extending arm. After enough hits, he'll explode. Turns out there's a reason for this: it's not the real Apocalypse. It's a robot double.

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 2 of 14

You know that rage comic you've probably come across somewhere on the Internet that involves some guy on the toilet who says "wow that was a good shit let's do it again" before he proceeds to shove the whole turd rope up his ass and take another dump? This is what good video games are like.

Guess what? This is not a good video game.

Spider-Man Level 1 (continued)

A few times in this level, you'll see The Shocker. To beat him, shoot at him until he stands up and jump over the shockwave he shoots at you. Repeat until he's down. When you beat him, you'll be able to replenish a load of health.

The red spider icons give even more points. The gold give 100, the silver 200, but the red give you 500.

The torn building cables are supposed to be spikes.

The boss here is a dragon. Avoid it and its fireballs and keep smacking it with your webs. When it dies, collect all the gems it leaves behind and you'll exit the level. Finally!

lukenuetzmann plays Spider-Man and X-Men in Arcade's Revenge - Part 1 of 14

Let's see, how can we make up for not being able to use another LP of a PC game where stuff happens differently?

I know! Let's show off LJN!

Level 1

After watching Spider-Man watching Gambit get kidnapped by some truck with a human grabber (or something), we delve into the depths of the hell we call LJN.

You have to collect all these blue icons with flashing red lights before you can enter the exit.

First of all, what the hell is this? I'm saving the fucking X-Men, not participating in some shitty scavenger hunt.

If there's an enemy nearby, the Spider-Sense icon on the upper-right next to the amount of lives you have will go off, and you'll also see the words "Spider Sense" below the HUD. Gee, thanks, LJN...I guess. The arrow tells you where you're supposed to go to find the next blue icon (whatever those things are, I don't know...and I don't wanna know).

If you can't pick a blue icon up, it's because the little red light on it isn't flashing. You basically have to go a set way through the level to pick all these things up. Thankfully, that's what the arrow is for. Why the hell LJN decided to do things like this, I don't know.

Thankfully, you can climb walls, shoot webs, and create your own little web ropes to get around. At least LJN didn't mess this up.

When you make your way deeper into the level, it looks like you're running around like you're frantically trying to make your way to the bathroom in what looks like...a bathroom. That reminds me, I need to go puke now.

The hearts refill your health. So if you see one, you might want to pick it up. (Durr.)

After beating this level, Spider-Man meets Arcade as well as the kidnapped X-Men: Gambit, Cyclops, Wolverine and Storm. Amazing how Arcade looks like some regular, run-of-the-mill turdburglar actor from the late 1970s. I blame the 1980s. And video games.

Spider-Man Level 1

The robots that throw those balls at you are evil, so here's what you do to beat up the first one at the beginning: get on the wall, then shoot, avoid, shoot, avoid, shoot two more times. It's dead.

Unlike the last level, you have none of those blue icons to tell you where to go. Have fun being lost, sucker!

The silver and gold spider icons just give you points. What, you can't just collect a certain amount of these things and get a 1-up? That sucks.

The Music of HyperZone...and differences

So, I did some digging and turns out that when the game to America, the Old Capital and Material Factory switched places in stage order. Other than that, it's basically the same game. Thanks to Flying Omelette for this info.

Good lord, the instruction manual has some gaffes. The ship information must be from an early developmental version, as some of the ships are in different locations and one isn't shown off at all. Page 6 basically proves this with "HAL Labolatory" as well as part of the Japanese title font in one of the pics. (The title screen and logo were changed for the West.)

Yes, some of the enemies are the HAL logo, if you couldn't already tell.

When you beat the game, the game restarts after the credits roll. From there you can play through the game again with the black car, complete with a quick-charging laser!

natsumikado1246 plays HyperZone - No Deaths - Part 8 of 9

Well, this is it. The final stage.

Final Area - Hyper Zone

Despite being pitch black, the road is nothing more than a straight line. Guess what? It's boss rush mode time.

The first boss you'll meet is the fire worm from Area 2. Since your blaster charges up much faster than in Area 2, this thing's basically no competiton.

The next boss is the Famicom button clone from Area 3. It will send its buttons at you in the form of bullets, but if you move around a lot (especially in a circular formation), you'll definitely be able to avoid them. Keep hitting this thing with a combination of regular and charged lasers.

Next is Area 4's giant flower. Fly around in a circle so that the fireballs miss you, and keep firing charged lasers at it. You'll be able to beat this thing without taking any damage.

Next up is Area 5's water worm, which fights like the fire worm from Area 2. Once again, avoid the white fireballs and hit it with charged shots. Once again, you'll have to be a little more careful this time around, as the water worm comes in and out of the floor and ceiling.

You finally meet Area 7's boss again. Wait for it to start moving before you send a charge laser at it, and move away when it moves away as that is when the boss will shoot at you.

You'll finally have the Area 1/Area 6 boss for last. Be careful when it's far away from you, as that is when it'll shoot at you. Do yourself a favor and move around in a circle again.

The final boss is some glass sphere with an alien in it. It will approach you, then shoot a bunch of electric bolts at you. After approaching you three times, it tries to crash into you, so be ready to move out of the way. It will then move back and repeat. Use your regular lasers instead of your charged lasers, so you can do more damage to him in less time.

When it comes dangerously close to you, just wait. You won't be able to damage it at all. It won't pose much of a threat.

When it sends the electric bolts at you in a circle, move around in a circular pattern so the bolts will always miss.

When it explodes, you've done it! You've won!

natsumikado1246 plays HyperZone - No Deaths - Part 7 of 9

At this point in the game, the terrain just starts acting weird...

Area 7 - Bioplant

Here's a weird thing for you: you stop switching ships at this point in the game. Get used to your shiny new black hovercar.

You can keep those clay-brown colored circles at the beginning of the area from shooting at you by flying in a circular pattern. You'll also be dealing with those worms again, too.

Those purple things with one eye don't look like much, but sometimes they can get in the way of concentration when they open their onscreen and stay there for about a second. It's really weird. Thankfully, the charged laser will make short work of them, as they crowd together really close in groups.

Near the end, there are no roads...only healing areas. Stay in the healing areas to minimize unwanted damage. There are a few points where you will have to tread forward where this is absolutely no road at all. Thankfully, those parts aren't very long by any stretch of the imagination.

The boss here is another worm. Wait for it to start moving before you send a charge laser at it, and move away when it moves away as that is when the boss will shoot at you.

HURR HURR THIS LEVEL IS GOTHIC

Area 6 - Neo Megaopolis

The car in this area is just like the car in the first area. It's just black and has a chargeable laser.

Believe it or not, you can get rid of some of the laser barriers by going outside the road and destroying them with a charged laser. While doing that, there's a really good chance you'll get rid of a few more.

The boss here is just like the Area 1 boss, but it fires more shots at you.

IIDX HyperZone - ICARUS ANOTHER

It's the first thing I could find that makes perfect sense.

Anyway, enjoy this vid. Song matches the stage perfectly.

WHAT DID I JUST SAY GAME

WHAT DID I JUST SAY

You'll be dealing with two enemies at the beginning: two sparks that move side to side while going in a zig zag pattern, and green pinecone-looking things that shoot at you.

When you reach the water area after the beginning, you'll be dealing with those pillars from Area 2 again. Manuever accordingly. It'll be a little easier said than done, since you'll be seeing ships floating in and out taking pot shots at you.

You'll soon be dealing with either red jellyfish or blue triangles, depending on what path you took.

On the second branching path, left takes you to pillars while right brings you to enemies. Pick your poison.

The boss here is the water worm, which fights like the fire worm from Area 2. Once again, avoid the white fireballs and hit it with charged shots.

You'll have to be a little more careful this time around, as the water worm comes in and out of the floor and ceiling.

natsumikado1246 plays HyperZone - No Deaths - Part 4 of 9

THIS IS NOT KIRBY'S DREAM LAND 2

Area 4 - Grass Land

The car you use here charges pretty fast. In fact, it's faster than the other cars you've used so far.

The first enemy you'll see here are checker-board patterned spheres. These things will shoot white fireballs at you, so charge your laser up. Only takes two seconds to get your lasers to max and take out everything in your path.

The worms move left and right and shoot white fireballs at you. A few well-placed lasers or a charged shot will take care of them, especially from afar.

Close to the end of the level, you'll see bushes that rapidly grow and block your path, making it harder to fly over them. A charged laser will get rid of the growth from some of these simultaneously.

The boss here is a giant flower. Fly around in a circle so that the fireballs miss you, and keep firing charged lasers at it. You'll be able to beat this thing without taking any damage.

We ride through a dance floor made out of flashing Tetris blocks and kill a joystick. That's probably the best description of anything in the history of anything in terms of the blog that I've ever come up with, and that's probably because there's no other game that lets you ride through a dance floor made out of flashing Tetris blocks and kill a joystick.

Area 3 - Material Factory

Your charged laser will definitely come in handy here. So will paying attention, as the grey spheres bounce around while the blue spheres and green triangles come at you from behind and shoot at you as they vanish into the background.

You'll be seeing the yellow squares in groups, but a charged laser will definitely get them out of your way.

The red spheres are like the grey spheres, but they can shoot at you. You may see them in groups of four.

The boss here is the right side of a Super Famicom controller, with the four buttons detached from the machine and rotating around it. It will send its buttons at you in the form of bullets, but if you move around a lot (especially in a circular formation), you'll definitely be able to avoid them. Keep hitting this thing with a combination of regular and charged lasers.

natsumikado1246 plays HyperZone - No Deaths - Part 2 of 9

It's hot in here...

Area 2 - Blast Furnace

Before starting a stage, you'll switch to a new car. This time around, you can hold the shoot button down to charge a shot, like in the later Mega Man games. These charge shots can go through enemies and tear through what's in the background, which is really nice.

The flame pillars mostly cover the sides, but if you stay mostly in the center, you won't worry about running into them all that much.

There will be a lot of boulders and grey squares coming at you, but if you keep your blaster charged and pay attention to where you're going, you won't be taking a lot of damage.

The boss here is a giant fire worm. Charge your shots up and shoot at it when you get the chance, so you can further concentrate on dodging it as well as the white balls it sends at you.
