The Chess Knights can cast Speed Up to increase their agility and evade percentage, which makes them harder to hit.
To get the torch blocking the stairway out of the way, you'll have to head to the sides, go south through some doors and hit the switches. Weaker enemies will guard the switches, but they are no less annoying than before.
Faerie Walnuts restore 50 MP when used. They're pretty expensive, so if you can get one as a rare drop from the enemies here, that's great.
Sometimes a chest will sprout feet and run away, but you can get the chest and open it if you can stay on it. There will be Mimics in this game (spoiler alert), but they won't show up until later in the game.
You'll eventually meet Gnome, an earth spirit. He will not allow you near the Mana Seed in the palace, which causes Gnome and Popoie to have a fight. An earthquake will soon occur, and you'll face the boss for this area: Fire Gigas.
Use Freeze and put Ice Saber on everyone, and be ready to cure everybody when he uses Exploder and Lava Wave, especially when he casts one after the other. When he changes into a set of fireballs that fly around, you won't be able to hit him and you'll have a good time to charge your weapons and heal up, as charged-up strikes will hit just as hard as magic. Hope you have Undine at Level 1, because you'll need that for this fight.
Once you beat Fire Gigas, you'll get the Axe's Orb.
