HCBailly and JB play Secret of Mana - Part 20 of 41

In this entry, we head to the Ice Palace and save Santa Claus.

North of the no-longer-tropical village is two exits to the north. The western path leads to Neko, while the eastern path leads to the Ice Palace.

Ice Palace

In this area, you'll have to hit switches in the rooms that you're in so you can move on. Be ready to explore, and more importantly, be ready to fight enemies.

The Blue Drop is much like the Green Drop from Gaia's Navel, but instead of poisoning you, they can "Frosty" you and freeze you, turning you into a snowman. You can wait for the Frosty effect to end on its own, or you can use the Remedy spell or a Medical Herb to speed up the process. Salamando's magic can definitely destroy them.

If you keep taking the right-hand path or door at the start, you'll eventually come across a Glove's Orb in a chest. The Chakra Hand raises the Intelligence and Wisdom of the person who wields it.

The Specters are non-corporeal enemies that can only be hit with magic, and they can hit you with Freeze and Energy Absorb.

The Weepy Eye can hit you with Lucent Beam, and its short-range eye beam can Moogle you.

You'll eventually reach the library. The Mystic Book will cast Energy Absorb and Thunderbolt on your party, and will temporarily make itself immune to your physical attacks with Lucid Barrier. When you hit the switches in the big room, you'll drop down into a room where you will have to fight three Tonpoles, which in turn will turn into three Biting Lizards. Salamando's magic will absolutely decimate them at max level, so take the three enemies in this room out one at a time. When you beat all three Biting Lizards, you'll end up where you were before you dropped down, except that there will be a door in front of you now.

Not long after this, you'll be using your whip to jump over pits and step on a teleporter pad that takes you to a throne room. A voice will tell you to turn back. If you choose "No" afterwards, you'll face Frost Gigas.

Frost Gigas fights much like Fire Gigas, except he has water and ice spells instead of fire-based ones. He will Frosty you with Freeze Breath, and he will hit you with Acid Storm and Freeze. Hit with high-level Salamando spells, and use Fire Saber on your weapons to give your attacks that little extra oomph. Beating Frost Gigas will net you a Boomerang's Orb and forge the Boomerang into the Rising Sun, which has no special properties.

When you beat Frost Gigas, he will turn into Santa Claus, and Rudolph will return. Santa will say that he was turned into Frost Gigas because kids no longer believe in him, and that when Mana fades, kids lose their hopes and dreams. After hearing that Mana Seeds can grow and become huge, producing tons of Mana as a result, he set out to find a Mana Seed to grow a huge Christmas tree. He took the seed from the Fire Palace, but it ended up changing him into Frost Gigas. He says that the power of Mana can be dangerous if abused, then hands you the Fire Seed for the Fire Palace. You'll then return to the entrance of the Ice Palace.
