PrinceWatercress plays Shanghai (SMS) - Part 6 of 6

And now, the other game's modes...and the music and sound without the FM Sound Unit!

Shanghai is played with 144 tiles from the Chinese game of Mahjong. At the start of the game, the tiles are shuffled and laid out in the Dragon formation.

The object of the game is to remove all of the tiles. They must be removed two at a time, in matching pairs, from among the free tiles.

A tile is free if there's nothing on top of it, and if it can slide left or right.

Two tiles match if they are identical. Any two flowers match. Any two seasons match.

The game is won when all tiles are removed...or lost when no legal moves remain. Let's go!

If the music sounds different to you, that is because this time, I'm playing it with the FM Sound Unit off. Despite being released in the West, the game had a planned Japanese release, but it ended up being cancelled due to the Master System tanking in Japan and Sega focusing all efforts in Japan on the Mega Drive at that point. Although the game never officially made it to Japan, the FM Sound Unit code was kept in, and was not known about until Master System emulation was a thing.

Tournament Mode lets you play with a strict time limit (or none at all) of five, ten or minutes. Unlike Solitaire Mode, you cannot peek at tiles and you cannot see all possible moves; as a matter of fact, the game does not tell you if you are out of moves until you actually run out of moves. When you hear a beep, that means a minute has elapsed from the time limit. When you do run out of moves, you'll see the five best scores.

Challenge Mode is a two player head-to-head mode where you have one of five time limits to make a move: 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 seconds and 60 seconds. Player 1 has a white cursor; Player 2 has a yellow cursor. Both players take turns until they run out of moves, and the player with more points wins. Afterwards, you'll see the five best scores.

And that's it! Have fun with this game!
