HCBailly plays Final Fantasy II AGAIN - Part 5 of 65

In this entry, we get a new mission, then we have fun with spell tomes.

Altair

Go back to the throne room and show the Ring to Princess Hilda. She tells you to keep the Ring and that she underestimated your efforts to infiltrate Fynn. She then tells you to retrieve the rare Mythril to make better equipment for the rebel army. Learn "Mythril," then say it to learn that Fynn's armor is made of Mithril. You'll learn that Fynn lost because the Empire had weapons made of Mythril, and that a rebel named Josef in the town of Salamand is looking for it. Unfortunately, Josef has yet to report back. She'll also ask you to go there with Minh. Talk to Minh, and he will give you his canoe while also joining your party who will show you how to get there. Minh, thankfully, will be standing right next to her. Minwu is a White Mage. The ConchShel he has can cast Shell on a party member, but it is a single-use item. He also has an Ether, which will restore some MP, which you will not have a lot of at this point in the game. Minwu has a lot of White magic spells, and they are all pretty powerful.

Talk to Hilda again. She'll tell you that the Empire also suffered heavy losses against Fynn, and tat they are building the Dreadnought to compensate for those losses. Use the Learn command on the word "Dreadnought." Say it to Hilda, and she'll tell you that the Empire is using the people of Bafsk to build the Dreadnought, a massive, heavily armed "Airship." Learn "Airship" while you're at it, too. Mention the Airship, and she'll tell you about Cid, the leader of the White Knights of Fynn, who built the airship. Cid became obsessed with his creation and fled to Poft, where he sells travelers passage on his airship for a fee so he can make further refinements to it.

If you talk to the old man at the right side of the room, he'll tell you to stop by Paloom on your way to Salamand, as they take people to Salamand by ship.

Talk to the King again. He will mention that he knew Scott was going to propose to Hilda, and that he would make a fine husband. Say "Wild Rose" to him, and you'll let him know that Duke Borgan betrayed them. Say "Mythril," and he'll tell you that it was once in common used and that it was mined in the north near Semitt Falls. If you mention the Dreadnought, he will tell you that he is unaware of it and that he was not told about it out of fear of worrying him.

Talk to people around town again. You'll find out that you can take a ship to Poft from Paloom and walk to Salamand from there. You can also mention Mythril to Tobul at the weapons shot, and he will tell you that if he had some Mythril, he could make finer equipment.

You can sell the Ether for 1250 Gil, but it is definitely not recommended. However, you can sell it, buy several tomes of the same type, give two to Minh, one to Firion and one to Guy. By using a tome in battle, you can cast the Level 8 version of that spell. Given that Blizzard (used here) will be multi-targeting all enemies when cast in tome form, the spell will lose 75% of its base power and will not be very powerful unless you are taking advantage of an elemental weakness. From here, go north to the forest north of Gatea (but no further), and run into either the Magician or OgreMage. Use the Blizzard tome as an item with all the characters who have it. You'll be able to do massive damage to all enemies without having to grind a whole lot, and the Magicians drop tomes that can be sold for a lot of money. There is a 20% chance of getting a Berserk tome, which can sell for 5000 Gil, a 10% chance of dropping a Scourge (also known as "Arrow) tome that sells for 1000 Gill, a 5% chance of dropping a Stun tome for for 4000 Gil, and a 5% chance of dropping a Mage's Staff for 2500 Gil. The OgreMages have more HP and can multi-target, however, but they have a 20% chance of dropping a Blind tome worth 2000 Gil and a 10% chance of dropping a Sleep tome worth 4000 Gil. If you're going to use these spells, at least give Maria the Berserk tome, as she can cast it on any weapons user and basically make them into a killing machine. (Not surprisingly, HCBailly bans Berserk, since it's so overpowered.)

Blind will cut physical and magical accuracy in half if a character is inflicted with it, making it rather nasty in this game.

The chance of running away from a battle is equal to the Evasion status of the character who performs the Flee command.

Just walk into the river and you'll use the canoe. Remember that unlike the last game, you can't battle monsters while swimming in rivers and lakes with the canoe and/or ship.
