HCBailly plays Final Fantasy II AGAIN - Part 3 of 65

In this entry, we head to Gatrea and learn more about what the Empire is up to.

There is a glitch in this version and the PlayStation one called the "select-cancel" trick. Select an action, then cancel, then input it again, cancel it again, and keep doing it until you gain enough experience for a level. You can do this with magic as well. (Not surprisingly, HCBailly bans this trick.)

Goblins give the most Gil. Get rid of them as soon as you can.

The Hornets can Poison you, but that's about it. Poison just causes you to take damage gradually. There is a second version of Poison called Envenom. Even though Envenomed shows up as being "Poisoned," it's permanent and not temporary. If you're Envenomed, don't expect it to just go away. You won't see this until later on, though. (You'll be able to tell which one is which during battle, which kinda helps.)

LegEaters are just vanilla enemies and have nothing special going on with them, so do whatever you want with them.

Here, HCBailly gets Maria's MP up to 15 or 16. The game keeps track of where you started the battle and subtracts where you ended the battle with HP and MP to determine the odds of increasing them. You'll need to finish battle with a lower amount of health and/or magic to more or less ensure a gain, then heal up after the battle.

Enemies drop varying amounts of money upon defeat, and while it is within a certain range, the exact amount will be random.

Just north of Fynn is Gatrea. Let's head there.

Gatrea

As you talk to the people, you'll find out that Fynn is just beyond the lake. Apparently, it's not that far off. As expected, Fynn is overrun by the Empire's minions, and the bar at the edge of the town houses a dying man who somehow escaped the Empire's grasp. It happens to be the owner, who is now serving drinks to the Imperials.

When you leave Gatrea for Fynn, hug the lake and go clockwise around it. Don't go too far north on your way there, or you'll run into some enemies that will kill you nearly instantly. (It's like a beginner's trap.)
