PrinceWatercress plays Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Battle Nexus (GBA) - Part 13 of 25

In this entry, we head to Feudal Japan...and this is where the game really gets hard.

Feudal Japan 1

Turtles required for this stage: Don, Mikey

When you start this stage, you'll get your first cutscene since the beginning of the game. You'll meet Mortu, who is trying to connect with Fugitoid/Dr. Honeycutt, as well as Splinter, who explains that Mortu is an ally. Splinter will explain that he had the hunch that the blue light had a connection to what mutated him and the Turtles into who they are today, and has found out his hunch was correct. He states that he has met with the Utroms, whom his master Hamato Yoshi once worked with. Mortu (whose name is Utrom spelled backwards, now that I'm noticing it as I make this blog entry) explains that he is also helping to put an end to Shredder, who is gathering crystals from the distant past for his own ends, and explains how he teleported the Turtles to where they are now. With Mortu's help, the Turtles are able to teleport into Feudal Japan and get the crystals before Shredder can so they can return home. Meanwhile, in New York City, Shredder finds out that the Turtles have caught wind of his plan, and makes a few adjustments to turn the virtual Feudal Japan the Turtles are heading to into a "world of death" with the help of Stockman.

Now for the stage itself. You need to find your weapon, first and foremost, as you do not want to fight the enemies here without it. Be careful when approaching the doors. There are two types of ninjas, and one of them will pop out. The ninjas with the red belt and headbands will performing a jumping somersault strike when you are close enough, while the ninjas with the blue belt and headbands will rush at you. Both attacks are going to hurt, so your best bet is to get to the doors and hold Up on the Control Pad until they disappear. If you let go of Up, you'll stop hiding behind the door, so keep the button held until they're gone. As for the enemies themselves, walk under the red ninjas' attacks and jump over the blue ones'.

By going down two levels, first by taking the pole down all the way to the left and then going down the one in the center, you'll be able to find your weapon. There will be spike traps, but they come out at regular intervals and alternate . When they shake, the spears are about to strike out. Avoid them as you destroy the four security nodes, then carefully go down and get your weapon. The blocks near your weapon can only be broken by Mikey.

You can now go back up and fight the ninjas, and you can also break the blocks that contain the crystals. This time, the ninjas will take a beating and won't block your attacks like they usually would if you just threw your shurikens. Some blocks around here contain bombs, so be careful.

To the right of the start is the red door that leads to the exit. You'll also have a lot of ledges to grab. When leaping from one ledge to another, press A to jump straight up and hold the D-Pad towards the ledge to grab it. Press Up when you want to pull yourself up off the edge. Press Down if you want to let go.

One of the rooms requires Donny and the night vision goggles. By pressing Up at the consoles in the wall, you can move the walls and platforms in your way. Break the blocks and move everything to get the crystals.

From here, I go back to the crawlspace to the left of the start and go up from there. The blocks here are easier to break with Don than with Mikey, and with Mikey, you'll have to jump up, hold Down and press B to attack a block below you. To the right of that is some health and some more ninja battles. There will be some ninjas that drop from the ceiling here, and there is a second ninja in the first door that pops up after you walk past it. The blue ninja with the red tint has the red key; you'll want to take him out and you'll want to do it carefully, as health is limited, especially in these later stages. Be sure to break the blocks at the end for a crystal.

From here, I go back and go up. The ninja here will throw his sword like a spinning projectile, but if you stay close to him, he won't do it and he's easier to beat up. Further up is another area. This area is above the night vision goggles room. Don't break the floor block with Donny; instead, stand on it, hold Up and press A with Donny to grab a ledge and enter another room. Beat up the ninja here and break the blocks for crystals and stuff. The pole in the center leads to the exit. From here, I go back and break the blocks in the previous room to ensure I get all the crystals. I then go to the exit.

With Mikey, if your timing with the neutral B charge attack, you can hit the ninja enemies once, then hit them again on the way back as they get up.

Remember the pole on the upper-left corner of the exit room? You'll need Mikey to break all the blocks in this room and get the last of the crystals. Just watch out for the two sword-throwing ninjas at the bottom.
