PrinceWatercress plays Super C - The Longplay

Raw version

Finished version

Anyway, here's me going through the game without losing all of my lives. This was fun.

Area 1

This stage, like most stages, are 2D, side-scrolling and platforming affairs. Left and Right let you not only move around, but aim the gun in conjunction with Up and Down. While you cannot shoot downwards on the ground, you can shoot downwards in the air. A jumps, and B shoots.

The flying yellow cylinders allow you to get power-ups. R is rapid fire and allows for - well - rapid fire as well as faster bullets; M is for machine and gives you a more powerful basic shot; S is the spread shot and not only allows for a five-way shot but also for ten bullets to be on-screen at any given time; L is a powerful, piercing laser; F is a flamethrower that shoots a powerful ball of fire that splits into four pieces that go diagonally when it hits something (making this better from Contra; B is for Barrier and gives you temporary invincibility; and the icon with no letter on it at all is a screen-clearing bomb that destroys all enemies.

Be ready to aim with the Control Pad when going up the slopes if you need to take out enemies. Later in the stage, you'll have to deal with firebombs that fly out from the background (and are well animated as they spin around).

The green guys just run at you, while the red guys stand around and fire at you.

You'll have to duck to take out the guys on the floor who are on their stomachs as well as the turrets that pop out of the floor.

The boss here is a helicopter. Take out the four cannons quickly, then take out the core before the hatch in the plane opens up and spits out enemies who will come after you. It won't be long until you enter Area 2.

Area 2

New level type for this game: the overhead Zelda-style perspective base stages, which replace the behind-the-back third person view from the bases in the first game. You can move in eight directions, and you can only fire in the direction you're currently facing (you can't move in one direction and fire in another like in Operation Logic Bomb, for example).

Stay on the move, as enemies will constantly be showing up...so watch the edges of the screen.

Destroying the tanks at the beginning of the area is easy, as the three way shots go in fixed angles and the the guy in the tank just fires at your current location and has limited range.

Watch out for the turrets; you'll have to have them completely on-screen to even hit it, and the turret will fire at your current position.

The boss here is a big tank with three gunners who fire at your current position and an electric force field in the front that pushes in and out. If you have the Spread gun, you can stay all the way at the bottom and avoid the shots from the gunners while taking them out from the bottom of the screen, but if you don't, you'll be moving around just to stay away from both the tanks and the gunners' shots. When you take out all three gunners, you'll end this area.

Area 3

Here, you'll be in the jungle. Duck down to take out the turrets that rise out of the ground, and watch out for enemies that come out from both sides of the screen and enemies that either hide or jump out of the trees.

There is a mortar cannon. Hang back and shoot at it, but destroy the bombs that it shoots out as they come down.

To defeat the spider mech, stay on top of it as it walks around. When it reaches either end of the screen, jump off, destroy the underside where all of the legs meet. Keep in mind that the spider mech shoots every three steps, and will shoot both left, right and upward at 45 degree angles.

Afterwards, you'll be experiencing earthquakes as you move forward. The ground will sink in parts, sometimes leaving bottomless pits that you don't want to fall into.

You'll then meet the real boss: a giant wall with four spheres that fire at you and a core in the center. When you reach where the boss is, stay in the center and keep firing, and try to get as many shots on the core as you can. From here, you'll have to move around and avoid being shot at while shooting at the turrets that rotate around the core as well as the core itself. Once you deal enough damage to the core, it's on to Area 4.

Area 4

Besides the usual enemies, you'll have things in the ceilings blowing out bubbles. I didn't know this until after I completed the game, but they don't shoot out bubbles forever! Also, there are drum-shaped cylinders connected to each other to create a ceiling that you can shoot down. Thankfully, the platforms will stop the segments from landing on you once you shoot them down, so hunker down under one.

On the way up, you'll come across turrets that will shoot at your current location as well as men in bird suits that will drop down on you in an attempt to destroy you from above. Be ready to move and shoot during the vertical climb.

You'll eventually come across an elevator. On the elevators, you'll also have to deal with the occasional guy with the gun, the turrets on tracks that will shoot at you as well as red and blue balls that spin around as they are connected with each other. These balls will home in on you, but you can easily destroy them with your gun.

The boss here is a "chandelier gun" with multiple laser cannons. Work from one side to the other, and switch sides every time all the lasers fire while firing at multiple cannons. As you take out cannons, you will make this battle much easier.

Area 5

Another vertical section, this time with slopes. This area feels similar to the third stage of Contra. Besides the flashing orbs that give you power-ups, there will also be turrets that come out of the ground and walls, flying men, and even rocks that will roll down the slopes. When you start seeing the rocks, jump straight up at the end of a platform before going to another one to scroll the screen upwards so more rocks can spawn, ensuring that one doesn't nail you in the middle of a jump.

You'll then drop from one train car to the other. Not only will you have guys chasing after you from behind, you'll also have turret guns that come out of the roofs of the cars that you will have to shoot down.

The boss here is a UFO. The flashing core in the center is the weak point, but you'll also have to shoot down and avoid skulls that will slowly fall to the ground before coming at you as well as spiked red balls that  Be ready to shoot down projectiles if they get in your way, as they can all be shot down, and make sure you keep hitting that core in the meantime. With practice, you'll be able to anticipate where stuff will be a little better, and you'll be able to beat this boss.

Area 6

Another top-down section! You'll be shooting some bugs, but soon, you'll start seeing mouths pop out of the floor. Keep moving north and keep shooting, and you'll be able to anticipate where the mouths will be so you can avoid them. You can also stay all the way to the right and they'll never bother you at all. (Thanks Replay Burners)

The gray-and-red "brain" enemies will circle you; just shoot them down as they spin around you.

For the area with he spiked balls, keep moving forward and shoot down everything you can. Interestingly, you can stay all the way to one side and make things easier on yourself. (Thanks Replay Burners)

After shooting down after wall, you'll face the boss. Stay just left or right of center so you don't get hit, and watch out for those spiked balls. You'll then reveal another face with one big eye. Keep shooting at the face from the center of the screen; you can shoot down the fireballs that home in on you with one hit and you can take out the worm that comes out of the holes in the side with your gun given enough shots. All the worm does is circle around you if you stand in one spot.

Area 7

You'll be making your way down in this area. Aside from the mantis men that come after you, you'll also have to deal with big, purple acid-sitting enemies. Avoid their projectiles as you pump them full of bullets. Thankfully, you can always duck down on the slopes and fire straight at the same time.

From here, keep jumping and shooting downwards to dig your way out, then get ready to deal with purple alien eggs that spit out facehuggers. The two power-ups you'll get at the beginning are the rapid fire gun and the spread shot; they make these things easy. Just keep in mind that the eggs are only vulnerable when moving and fully on-screen, and that you may have to adjust your aim to destroy the facehuggers that leap out of them.

The boss here is a skeleton-looking thing that produces purple blobs from its horns and fireballs out of its chest cavity. Destroy the chest cavity and focus on the skull. The blobs will eventually drop down to your level, but you can easily destroy them. The skull also creates red spiked balls, but they just fly over you and won't hit you as long as you're not in the air.

Area 8

Red alien fetuses will float towards you; shoot them down. Some of the mouths in the floor and ceilings spit red spiked balls at you; destroy them, too. Also, aliens will run at you, so watch out for them.

Duck down before shooting down the alien heads that spit three projectiles at a time. Watch out for running aliens as you do this.

Once you reach the black-and-purple area with the ceiling, watch out for floating fetuses that spawn in as the ceiling drops down before slowly moving back up. You can move away to de-spawn some, but you'll have to shoot down the rest. Make sure that the ceiling is at least halfway back up before jumping over any pits, and watch out for running aliens.

When you see the glowing background, you've made it to the final boss of the game. Wait for the boss to fully rise up out of the ground, then jump up to the woman's face and stand next to it while holding Up and Right while repeatedly shooting. You'll avoid everything that drops down as well as the spiked worm things that shows up every so often. When you hit the face at the top enough times, you'll complete Super C!
