The aliens are back. Time to kill 'em.
Area 1
This stage, like most stages, are 2D, side-scrolling and platforming affairs. Left and Right let you not only move around, but aim the gun in conjunction with Up and Down. While you cannot shoot downwards on the ground, you can shoot downwards in the air. A jumps, and B shoots.
The flying yellow cylinders allow you to get power-ups. R is rapid fire and allows for - well - rapid fire as well as faster bullets; M is for machine and gives you a more powerful basic shot; S is the spread shot and not only allows for a five-way shot but also for ten bullets to be on-screen at any given time; L is a powerful, piercing laser; F is a flamethrower that shoots a powerful ball of fire that splits into four pieces that go diagonally when it hits something (making this better from Contra; B is for Barrier and gives you temporary invincibility; and the icon with no letter on it at all is a screen-clearing bomb that destroys all enemies.
Be ready to aim with the Control Pad when going up the slopes if you need to take out enemies. Later in the stage, you'll have to deal with firebombs that fly out from the background (and are well animated as they spin around).
The green guys just run at you, while the red guys stand around and fire at you.
You'll have to duck to take out the guys on the floor who are on their stomachs as well as the turrets that pop out of the floor.
The boss here is a helicopter. Take out the four cannons quickly, then take out the core before the hatch in the plane opens up and spits out enemies who will come after you. It won't be long until you enter Area 2.
Area 2
New level type for this game: the overhead Zelda-style perspective base stages, which replace the behind-the-back third person view from the bases in the first game. You can move in eight directions, and you can only fire in the direction you're currently facing (you can't move in one direction and fire in another like in Operation Logic Bomb, for example).
Stay on the move, as enemies will constantly be showing up...so watch the edges of the screen.
Destroying the tanks at the beginning of the area is easy, as the three way shots go in fixed angles and the the guy in the tank just fires at your current location and has limited range.
Watch out for the turrets; you'll have to have them completely on-screen to even hit it, and the turret will fire at your current position.
The boss here is a big tank with three gunners who fire at your current position and an electric force field in the front that pushes in and out. If you have the Spread gun, you can stay all the way at the bottom and avoid the shots from the gunners while taking them out from the bottom of the screen, but if you don't, you'll be moving around just to stay away from both the tanks and the gunners' shots. When you take out all three gunners, you'll end this area.
Area 3
Here, you'll be in the jungle. Duck down to take out the turrets that rise out of the ground, and watch out for enemies that come out from both sides of the screen and enemies that either hide or jump out of the trees.
There is a mortar cannon. Hang back and shoot at it, but destroy the bombs that it shoots out as they come down.
To defeat the spider mech, stay on top of it as it walks around. When it reaches either end of the screen, jump off, destroy the underside where all of the legs meet. Keep in mind that the spider mech shoots every three steps, and will shoot both left, right and upward at 45 degree angles.
Afterwards, you'll be experiencing earthquakes as you move forward. The ground will sink in parts, sometimes leaving bottomless pits that you don't want to fall into.
You'll then meet the real boss: a giant wall with four spheres that fire at you and a core in the center. When you reach where the boss is, stay in the center and keep firing, and try to get as many shots on the core as you can. From here, you'll have to move around and avoid being shot at while shooting at the turrets that rotate around the core as well as the core itself. Once you deal enough damage to the core, it's on to Area 4.
