...and now for the maze where your skills are put to the test. Y'know, if the holes stayed revealed like in the Ozzie section in Magus' Castle in Chrono Trigger, I'd like this part a little more.
From Muuk's House, head to the Forest of Bewilderment, which will be to the northwest.
Forest of Bewilderment
Head north at the start of the maze; you'll be able to break up a path blocking you from the start of the maze.
It is possible to take a wrong turn and be forced to backtrack, so watch your step.
The wolf-like enemies throw rocks at you. Let them throw their rocks, then attack them as they hop back to their weapons as they will be completely vulnerable then.
You'll eventually run into some guards, who will recognize you due to the mark on your hand (and maybe Muuk telling them about you). They will tell you about the holes int the path and to watch out for them. Sadly, you'll have to remember where they are as they are always covered up no matter what. You do want to fall into them at least once for two things: a Medical Herb if you don't have one, and the Silver Lance, which will be a useful weapon to have at this point in the game. To go back above ground, just walk a big root on a wall.
The frogs will hop around and attack you with their tongues, but they are very slow and can easily be hit with a weapon.
The Copper Shield is the first shield of the game; take the time to equip it.
There is a detour near the end where you will find a healer; he will replenish your HP and MP if you need it.
You'll eventually find a guard in front of a door, and if you talk to him, he will tell you that Gomunus is behind the door and that he smashes people with rocks. He'll get out of your way when Gomunus wakes up, and you'll be able to go in and face Gomunus.
Gomunus moves in wave-like patterns, and the rocks that he throws will try to home in on you on the first bounce. For best results, hit Gomunus from the side; if you hit him from the front or back, he will charge at you due to being behind him or in front of him for too long.
When you leave the area after beating Gomunus, you'll meet a man in pink and white who is flanked by four guards. This is Carleem, ruler of the kingdom of Darnaal, and he is impressed with your performance against Gomunus. He will say that Muuk was right about you, and from here, you will be a gladiator in his arena. Gomunus will leave, then you will head to Muuk's Cabin. Talk to Muuk, and he will tell you that the battle with Gomunus was a demonstration of your abilities and part of his plan. From here, you are not just a gladiator; you are Carleem's slave. The symbol on your hand is that of a gladiator, and that those who bear the mark must continue to risk their lives for the sake of their master until they die. Four soldiers show up and pay Muuk off, then you get taken away. Also, it is revealed that the girl in white and green here is named Flora, and Muuk will reassure her that we will return stronger and wiser.
You'll be taken to Laiard Coliseum and be forced to enter through the back gate. You'll now be fighting for your life...
