It's time to get back into the things with The PrinceWatercress Let's Play channel, and this time, we're tackling a role-playing game originally for the Sharp X68000 that was re-tooled for Super Nintendo. This one is a little quirky and a little bit hard, and is more infamous and than famous.
You are Nasir, Champion of the Light. It is time to fulfill your destiny. The water around Lakeland has become muddy, and is seen as a sign of impending evil. Monsters are everywhere and need to be stopped. It's up to you to find out why the water is muddy and make it pure again. You'll then head to the town of Atland.
Atland
In the town, you can use the Control Pad to move around. You cannot move diagonally in this game; you can move only in the cardinal directions. To talk to people, you have to walk up to them and press the Y Button. X, A and B can be used from there to advance the text. By talking around, you'll find out that the Mayor is stressed out about something. Also, the largest house in the village is the Mayor's, and that house is in the southwest corner of the village. Another girl will tell you that her boyfriend works in the Gold Cave to the north with Giles. Remember that for later.
There are some doors you cannot enter yet. Don't worry about them for now.
You won't be able to buy anything in shops because you won't have any money. Press X, Y or B to back out in case you go into a shop early.
The Mayor's house is the place you want to go to advance the plot. The Mayor's wife will tell you that the Mayor went into the church. Head into the church near the fountain in the center of town and talk to the Mayor, who is to the left. As the Mayor talks about the dirty water and wonders what is causing it, someone shows up and mentions that someone has come out of the Gold Cave to the north badly wounded. You'll automatically warped over there. Talk to the guy on the ground, and he will mention that demons are in the cave and Giles is trapped. Talk to the Mayor again, and he will tell you to talk to the Cleric. Go back south to the town and enter the church again. Talk to the cleric, and he will call for a meeting at the Mayor's house before telling you to go rescue Giles.
Head back to the Mayor's House, and you'll talk to the Mayor again. The Mayor will give you 300 gold to buy everything in the armor shop to the north. The Gold Cave entrance will also be open to you.
At the armor shop, use the Control Pad and the A Button to buy the Short Sword, the Bandit Armor and Iron Shield. You'll have enough money for one of each, so do that. Afterwards, press Start to go to the menu. From here, you can see what items you have to equip, what magic you have, equip items and save your game at any time. You can also check your stats and see how much experience you have.
Use the Control Pad and the A button to select Equip, then press Right to equip your sword, armor and shield. Press A to go back to the gameplay screen. You're done in the village, so head north and enter the Gold Cave.
Gold Cave
The enemies are pretty simple. Wait for the blue blobs to get close to you and press A to strike at them. They can split and reproduce, but that's just more experience for you. You won't have a lot of range, so be ready to strike when they're about to get on top of you. Ditto for the gray demons that are moving around randomly.
Pressing B allows you to jump. Using it in conjunction with the Control Pad will let you jump over pits.
In case you take damage, just stand there and wait. Your HP will slowly recover automatically. Ditto for your MP, but you won't have to worry about casting spells until later. Your HP bar will be very short at the beginning of the game, but it will get bigger as you take down monsters...so keep your distance and let the monsters come to you so you can get some much needed experience.
At the bottom if your HP followed by the enemy's HP below that. To the right are the two magic items you have equipped as well as your HP. That's it for the simple HUD for this game, thankfully.
If you find a chest, go up to the south end of it and press Y to open it. Right now, you will find Gold, and while it will not be much, it will help a little later.
The Healing Pot will recover a little bit of your HP. Use it during a boss battle; you can recover HP by standing in a safe place in areas with regular enemies and you'll need the Healing Pot for when it gets really nasty. If you already have a Healing Pot when you open a chest that contains one, you'll get Gold instead, and the amount of Gold you get is your current level times 10. If you're at Level 3, you'll get 30 Gold.
The skeletons with the sword and shields will slowly move towards you, and while they have more HP, they are the easiest enemies in the Gold Cave to fight.
Eventually, you'll make it outside, and you'll find Giles. Unfortunately, Giles is injured and does not have the Healing Pot. Thankfully, you should have it, so when he asks for it, say "Yes." You'll still have to escort him out of the Gold Cave, and he moves around very slowly. Giles' pathfinding isn't too terrible, but you still don't want to go too fast.
