PrinceWatercress plays Lagoon - Part 12 of 12

...and now, the stunning conclusion to Lagoon!

Secret Place

In the northwest corner of the island, there is a flight of stairs in the ground. This leads to the last dungeon in the game.

The guys with the swords and shields are slow and can be easily defeated with the sword. The same is true with the black creatures with the white arms, but they are crazy fast and very powerful - even if you're at the maximum level of 35 - compared to the sword and shield guys.

There is one more thing, and it is not only completely optional, but completely useless: the Time Ring. All it does is slow down normal enemies and is useless against bosses. And if you're at Level 35, what's the point?

When you find the white doors with the gold trim, there's no going back. You'll be facing the final boss battles whether you like it or not.

The first boss is some dark-colored thing under glass. Keep whacking it with the sword, and you'll eventually break it and turn it into a gargoyle. Believe it or not, if you just stay close and keep swinging the sword, it goes down in three seconds. For best results, equip the Elixir for just in case.

You'll regain all your health, then a door will open to the north. Before you go in, equip the Life Ball. You'll meet Thor and Zerah, who tell you that you just figured into their plans and that you just woke up the evil spirit and that we got used just like Thor, as we were the ones who had to wake it up. The only thing controlling it now is Thor. Thor then disappears, then Zerah turns into a beast. Run up to him while he is against the wall and whack him multiple times. Zerah says that even with him dead, Thor will still be controlling the evil spirit. He then commands him to kill you, and you'll notice that something in Thor has changed.

To beat Thor, you'll have to run at him, fireballs rotating around him be damned, and smack him with the sword. after a few hits, he turns into a four winged owl carrying an orb. Get away from him immediately. If you get hit one too many times, the Life Ball will save you. When you're back on the bottom half of the screen, equip the Force Ring to heal yourself and get the Elixir in your item slot again for just in case. Thor will fly around in an infinite pattern. and you want to stand to the side so that you can jump and strike the orb with your sword and deal damage. If you get hit, the Force Ring will cure it for as long as you have MP. You may get pushed back by one of the lasers Thor shoots at you. Just get back up there and try again. As you deal damage, the orb will break and Thor will turn red. You'll be able to kill Thor shortly after he turns red.

When the screen fades in and out, leaving you in the room with a now-human Thor, quickly un-equip the Force Ring. Talk to Thor. He apologizes for bringing back the evil spirit, and acknowledges that he knew full well of the legend. Thor gives you his pendant, which now contains Thor's spirit, and tells you to defeat the evil spirit alone.

From here, leave the room. You;ll see the evil spirit turn red and revive. Hold Left or Right on the D-Pad to move out of the way immediately, then move to the bottom of the screen and equip the Powerful Ring. Turn around, and smack the evil spirit a couple of times when it teleports to you. You've done it. The evil spirit is finally dead. Mathias' spirit will apologize to you and Thor through all of this, and Nasir is now tasked with keeping the balance between Light and Darkness and building a peaceful world. Thor is tasked with staying behind and combining his power with Nasir's to make sure this tragedy is never repeated. Lagoon Castle sinks back into the ground. You have finally beaten Lagoon!

PrinceWatercress plays Lagoon - Part 11 of 12

Our adventure is nearing an end...but can we beat Battler and catch up with Zerah?

Lagoon Castle

From here, go all the way south, then make your way east. You'll find a chest that contains the Curing Ring, which will very quickly replenish your HP at the cost of your MP. Go back, then go north and follow the path. When you have a choice between north and south, go north. You'll find Princess Felicia! Equip the Statue, step on the crest on the floor and use the Statue to free Felicia. She will tell you that Zerah and Thor have made it into the Secret Place first, and that she was controlled by Zerah, who made her open the door to the Secret Place without realizing it. You'll also find out Zerah is a warlock. Thankfully, you can go through the now-broken mirror to continue on.

When you do, you'll meet a new enemy: giant, moving suits of armor that have a lot of health, fall easily to the sword and give a lot of experience when you die (over 300 experience!). Be sure to find the Moon Armor, which is the best armor in the game, and equip it.

If you need experience, fight off the giant armor guys. You'll be able to get a lot of experience to get closer to the maximum level of 35.

From the start, go northeast to get the Moon Armor, then go southwest to find a path leading to a door. Inside will be a battle with Battler, so be sure to save before you go through. To beat Battler, equip the Power Ring, avoid the egg-shaped monsters and their attacks and attack Battler directly. To do that, stand across from him and off to the left after he teleports, then keep whacking him.

Secret Place

To the north of where you fought Battler, go to the north and jump onto the island in the background. This takes you to the Secret Place. How this works while violating the laws of perspective, I have no clue. You'll be in the Secret Place, and if you go into the nearby building and talk to the man there, he will tell you that Zerah has revived the evil spirit and that he and Thor are underneath the castle. You'll also learn that if you go south, you'll be able to return to Lagoon Castle if you need to level up via a teleporter.

PrinceWatercress plays Lagoon - Part 10 of 12

We make our way up to the clouds and then to Lagoon Castle. Let's do this.

In the cloud section, all you need to do is make your way north, jumping from cloud to cloud. When you see the island, jump to it. You'll be at Lagoon Castle.

Lagoon Castle

Step on the plaque to the north. You'll learn that when the moonlight comes into the castle's terrace, you'll have to hold the Moon Stone to the sky. If you control the power of Light, it will turn into the Moon Blade.

You'll meet some new enemies, and they will do a ton of damage. The green guys with the spears are very fast and very powerful, but you can hit them with magic. The jesters are easy to kill with the sword, as all they do is move towards you. The brown one-eyed enemies are slow and move around randomly, and are the easiest to defeat.

On the entry (red) level, you'll want to go northwest and enter the doorway there.

The floating enemy on the crystal orb shoots fireball with you, and is pretty powerful. The gray armored enemies plod towards you, and can also easily be finished off with your sword.

On the brown level, you'll want to make your way to the center of the floor. There is an optional area where you will meet the King and Queen of Lagoon Castle - Princess Felicia's parents - who will tell you that Felicia is trapped in a mirror on the fourth floor and that a statue must be placed on a crest in the room Felicia where is trapped to break her free. Felicia is the only person who can take you to the secret place, and if we don't get there before Zerah does, it will spell disaster.

The statue will be in a room to the east, not far from where Felicia's parents are. From here, head back to the red floor and head south, then west. You'll find another section of this floor. Go down the stairs that you find, then go west and enter the stairway you see. This leads to the Silence Terrace. Equip the Moon Stone, then stand in the nearby moonlight and press L. You'll learn that Thor is the Champion of Darkness, but that he was supposed to be an ally, not an enemy. Unfortunately, Zerah raised him to use his powers for evil, and now that his power is being used to revive the evil spirit, we can call upon the power of the Moon Stone to get the Moon Blade, which we now receive. This is the final sword of the game and the most powerful. Equip it.

From here, exit to the east. You'll be in another maze-like area with a light blue floor. There are no enemies here, so you can take your time and get out. There is a Bright Stone in a chest if you need it. On this floor, go all the way south, then go all the way west. Folow the path all the way to the north, then keep going. You'll be on another floor, which I'll call the purple floor.

Once you're on the purple floor, open the chest to the south to get an Elixir, which you'll definitely be needing if you don't have one. There will be some new enemies, including a green soldier that can easily be killed with the sword and black one-eyed crabs that move around randomly and are easily killed by the sword if they somehow move into a wall. You want to make your way north when you start exploring this floor. You'll find the Moon Shield, which is the final shield of the game and definitely something you want to equip.

PrinceWatercress plays Lagoon - Part 9 of 12

At this point, there's no turning back. If you need any more levels, get them here before continuing.

Gnome Tree

To the north is a tree. Entering it takes you to the Gnome village of Lilaty.

The first person you meet will tell you about the Ice Cave, and that you will need the Fur Mantle to go inside without freezing to death.

To the north, there is a man who will say he is an honest man and ask you if you think he is lying. You will not get anything out of him regardless of your answer, but keep him in mind for later.

By going across the bridge, there is a woman who will tell you that there is a big fat liar in the village who has the Fur Mantle. She will give you the Truth Fire and tell you to use it on a liar, as they will tell the truth no matter what. Equip the Fur Mantle and talk to the honest man, and instead of choosing either answer, press Y to get different dialogue along with the Fur Mantle.

One of the villagers will tell you about the Nymphs in the spring behind the Ice Cave, who used to come to the village but have since not done so anymore due of demons in the Ice Cave. He says that the Nymphs will be able to help you with their powers, and that you can call them with the Angel's Bell, which he then gives you.

The villager in the old man in the southwest corner will tell you something about the world being saved when Light and Darkness become one, and ask what it means.

There is nothing else you can do, so equip the Fur Mantle and go up the stairs to the north. You'll enter the Gnome Plain, which takes you to the entrance to the Ice Cave.

Ice Cave

If you go into the Ice Cave without the Fur Mantle equip, your health will rapidly drain, so equip the Fur Mantle.

The guys with the knives are fairly quick and will follow you around, but you can easily kill them with the sword.

If you see any holes in the floor, do not walk into them. You will fall in and instantly die.

The chest with the Elixir is the last time you will be able to find a free Elixir in a chest.

The crystal blobs shoot out a seven-way shots when they turn into a cylinder-style shape, but they can be easily destroyed with the sword.

The Bright Stone will be needed later, so it is essential that you get it.

The boss here is a sphere-like ball named Thimale. Equip the Protection Ring, then attack the eight cylinders with the monsters inside that shoot crystal projectiles. You'll shatter them in one hit. You may have to heal yourself with the Elixir. Once you destroy them, Thimale will turn transparent. If your level is at least in the low 20s and you have the Force Shield equipped, you can destroy Thimale in a few hits, eight-way projectile be damned. Best to use the Power Ring to be sure.

Beating Thimale will award you the Life Ball, which completely refills your health upon death and disappears when used. Unfortunately, there's only one in the game. You'll also be able to enter the Nymph Spring. At the spring, use the Angel's Bell when you go as far north as you can. You will summon the nymphs, who will tell you that Zerah is heading to Phantom Hill to go to Lagoon Castle, and you will be handed the Moon Staff, which gives you the most powerful spells. You'll then be teleported to Phantom Hill.

Phantom Hill

Once you're in Phantom Hill, you won't be able to go to earlier areas.

Here, you'll be going up stairs and fighting red parrots. They move around randomly, and if they run into you, they do a ton of damage. Equip the Fire Staff and the Water Crystal to get the Water Hammer. Even though one shot costs 15 MP, it does a ton of damage to any enemies you come across at this point.

Near the top, there is a small hole. Make sure your HP and MP are completely full before going in. When you do, you'll face Ella.

To beat Ella, equip the Powerful Ring and smack her as much as much as possible. The more damage you do to her, however, the more often she will teleport around the room while shooting fire balls around the room in a clockwise direction. This is very bad, especially when you're one hit away from killing her.

Once you somehow manage to beat her - probably by getting the last hit in at random - leave the room. A ladder will show up immediately to the north of the hole. Go all the way up, then leap over the gap to the right. You'll finally meet the evil Zerah, and you'll find out that he raised Thor to call upon the evil spirit to give himself great power. He also says that it is a surprise that you and Thor know each other, and then decides to kill you himself. Mathias teleports in and fights Zerah, and Zerah will escape when you talk to him. Mathias will tell you the truth: you and Thor are sons of the gods, and that Mathias found the both of you on Phantom Hill. When he tried to pick both of you up, Zerah swooped in and took Thor away. Not surprisingly, it is all Zerah's fault that the water has become muddy, and that Nasir is the Champion of Light and Thor the Champion of Darkness. Mathias gives you the Thunder Crystal, then tells you to head to Lagoon Castle before teleporting you into the clouds.

PrinceWatercress plays Lagoon - Part 8 of 12

Our business in Siegfried Castle leads to us finding the Mint, which will cure the town of Poper.

Siegfried Castle

There are two doors far to the north on the first floor, but you will need a key to open both of them.

In the basement, you will fight humanoid rats in suits of armor. You'll also fight yellow guys with multiple arms carrying swords, and they are fast.

The power ring will increase your strength by 30 points when worn, but once again, it uses MP as long as you wear it. It is very useful against bosses.

The Thunder Armor found in the basement has more defense than the Sonic Armor from Denegul. You'll also find the Maxim Shield, which is even more powerful than the shield you bought in Denegul.

Also on the basement, you'll find the Mint. Once you find it, head back to Poper.

Poper

At Poper, equip the Mint and head to the church. Talk to the Cleric with the Mint equipped, and you will not only cure the town, you'll be able to walk through the window to the right and get something special. Follow the path and talk to each spirit you see along the way to learn more about the legend of the Champions of Light and Darkness. The second-to-last person will give you the Star Staff, and the last will tell you that Siegfried Castle is controlled by a monster named Duma, who locked the entrance to the second floor to block a warp point on the third floor that goes upstream and keep the people of Lakeland from Lagoon Castle. This person will give you Duma's Key, which will unlock the second floor, and ask you to defeat Duma.

If you talk to the people, they will thank you for curing the town. There is nothing more to do here, so head back to Siegfried Castle.

Back To Siegfried Castle

To beat Duma, equip the Power Ring and stand in front of Duma's face. Make sure the hands don't line up with you and hit you, and keep whacking at the face. The trick is to get close to Duma without getting hit yourself and to jump towards the face to ensure you hit Duma. Beating Duma rewards you with the Water Crystal and the Key of Siegfried.

With the Key of Siegfried, you can now enter the doors to the far north on the first floor. On the third floor, go south and follow the path, and avoid all the doors. You'll face zombies with one eye that shoot powerful lasers at you, and if you venture off the path, you'll fight red armored soldiers that will move around in square patterns in and go after you.

You'll eventually meet Thor...and Battler, who tries to turn Thor and manipulate him into doing his bidding. An earthquake is then felt, and Zerah makes Lagoon Castle rise up into the air. We will now have to find another way into Lagoon Castle. Thor and Battler will then disappear. Walk into the teleport crest, and you'll head to the Gnome Tree.

PrinceWatercress plays Lagoon - Part 7 of 12

We finally meet villains in this game before heading further into the world, where the trouble caused by the murky water has proven to reach far and wide across the world.

Dwarf Desert

Dwarf Cave

Now that you have the Freezing Pot, it's time to head back into the Dwarf Cave and enter the area where we found the Protective Ring. Use the Freezing Pot on the odd-looking lava area to turn it into ground that acts as a pathway to the Hobbit Village.

Once you cross, you'll meet Princess Felicia. She will tell you she was kidnapped by Ella and brought here in an attempt to use her power to move Lagoon Castle to an inaccessible place and end the world. She mentions a secret place in the castle where the power of magic will be multiplied, and if the evil spirit is revived, it will be terrible. Suddenly, Ella shows up and tells us to stay out of this if we want to stay alive, then runs off with Felicia.

From here, go north, then west, then open the door. Save the game before you go in, equip the Elixir and get the Protective Ring ready when you enter. Ella will tell you that you've sealed your fate, and sends her pet Eardon after you. Stay away from Eardon, and when Eardon sticks his head out, whack him in the face. You'll have to lure him towards you on the northern half of the room, then move away and move to the south so you can hit Eardon in the face. Eardon will shake to fake you out, but just wait for him to move again. If you're patient enough, you'll eventually destroy Eardon. Go through the door to the north to enter the Hobbit Valley, then save your game.

Hobbit Valley

There are two new enemies: a slow, gray larva like enemy that comes at you when it sees you and an orc that throws pickaxes at you. Both enemies are pretty slow.

If you go north from where you began, you'll be in the village of Poper.

Poper

By talking to the villagers, you'll find out that this town used to be lively, but it is now deserted and that an epidemic has spread in the village due to the murky water of Lagoon Castle making its way here. Sadly, some people are suffering and others still are now dead.

There is a church here, you'll learn that the water of Lagoon Castle was once clean and blessed the village. Now that the water is murky, however, things have changed. You'll also learn you need some Mint, which will cure just about anything and free the village from the plague. There is some in Siegfried Castle, but the demons there make it impossible for anyone to get near it.

There is another building to the west of the church. Here, you'll see a sick mother tell her child to leave the village. There is not much else you can do here, however.

There is nothing else to do in Poper, so leave the village and head west to reach Siegfried Castle.

Siegfried Castle

The swords being swung up and down by the statues on the walls are just there for decoration; they do not hurt you.

The knights here are impervious to magic, and while wind magic can push them back, it does no damage.

The spinning triple orb enemies will move around in random directions and also come at you if you're close enough. If they hit you, they will do a lot of damage. Thankfully, magic can kill them.

The Defensive Ring does not increase your defense; instead, it makes you invincible if you wear it.

The Force Sword is a step up from the Magic Sword you found in the Dwarf Cave, so go ahead and equip it.

PrinceWatercress plays Lagoon - Part 6 of 12

Our adventure takes us to the Dwarf Cave, where it can be very, very easy to die.

Dwarf Desert

From here, head all the way back to the Dwarf Desert. From the entrance from Philips Castle, head north. At the "upside-down Y," keep going north. (East is a dead end, while west takes you back to Denegul.) Look for some rocks in the vast field of sand that are blocking a cave entrance, then equip the Powerful Mirror and press L while in front of the entrance. This will get rid of the rocks. Put the Powerful Mirror away and enter the Dwarf Cave.

Dwarf Cave

The music here is Super NES exclusive; the music here in the X68000 version is the same as the Gold Cave.

Be ready to save often and especially after entering a new room, because this area will be ready to decimate you.

The glowing red chasms at the beginning are instant death pits, so jump clear over them. This may be easier said than done in the second half of this beginning part, but the jumps are still doable. The square-shaped hole at the end takes you to the inside of the cave proper. There will be lava, and it will absolutely sap your health if you stand on it.

Watch out for fireballs, as they will sap your health. The rock monsters will shoot out a five-way shot, but you can jump over those fireballs like you can the ones from the rock monsters in the Dwarf Desert. Both monsters can tear you apart, and the fireballs won't work against the rock monsters, but if you can destroy a fireball after it hits a wall and before it disappears, you'll get a lot of experience out of it.

Follow the path, then go east as soon as you're able. You'll find a Magic Sword not far from the path that you'll want to equip for another 40 Strength points. You'll want to watch out when you go further to the east to the four-way crossing, as fireballs will shoot at you and sap your health as they push you into the lava. At this point, you'll want to save often.

Go south. When you see a lava gap, jump to the south to take as little damage as possible to the chest. If you didn't get the Sky Staff from the Mayor of Voloh, you'll find it in this chest; otherwise, you'll find money instead. Hop north back to the path, then go back to the four-way crossing and go north. Avoid the fireballs and enter the doorway to another area.

If you get back on the path from the Sky Staff/gold chest, jump the gap and goes east there, you'll get a shortcut back to the Dwarf Desert. Remember this for later.

Head west and avoid the fireballs as you go. At the end of the path, hop to the north and keep going. You'll get the Wind Crystal, which will allow you to cast wind spells. Combine it with the Earth Staff to get the Wind Cutter, which uses a few more MP but does slightly more damage than the fireball you currently have.

From here, keep jumping to the east until you find another chest. You will see what looks like a ramp of lava. Remember this for later. The chest near it contains the Protective Ring, the first of five rings for the Equip menu. It increases your defense by 30, but it quickly depletes your MP as it does this, so you're better off not equipping it until you're fighting a boss, since you can't use magic in boss fights, anyway.

The fireball may not be useful at all against the rock monsters, but the Wind Cutter will tear them apart. Keep that in mind as you fight them.

From the Protective Ring, follow the path to the south. You'll find an opening to the Silence Cave. Go all the way to the north and press Y at the flashing stone to pick it up. This is the Moon Stone, which you will definitely need later.

You're done in the Dwarf Cave, so save your game before heading back through the Dwarf Cave. If you're desperate, hop through the lava to the south and then keep hopping to the west from the Silence Cave to make backtracking easier. This time, go to the four-way crossing, go south, then jump the lava gap to the east and get on the shortcut to the Dwarf Desert. You're finally home free! From here, head to Denegul.

Denegul

When you return to Denegul, you'll meet Mathias. He will tell you that Princess Felicia was kidnapped by a woman named Ella and is being kept in the Dwarf Cave. You'll also find out that Ella is working for Zerah, who is trying to revive the evil spirit using the power of Darkness, and he is using Felicia to make that happen. We must now head back to the Dwarf Cave.

One of the villagers near Mathias will tell you that there is a path to the Hobbit Valley in the Dwarf Cave, but you will need the Freezing Pot to open up the road. The villager who told you about the Moon Stone will tell you that it will become the Moon Blade when forged. As for the guy who wanted the Moon Stone, talk to him with the Moon Stone equipped, and he will give you to the Freezing Pot. Head back to the Dwarf Cave and use the Freezing Pot on what looked like a ramp near the chest that contained the Protective Ring, and you'll open up the path to Hobbit Village.

PrinceWatercress plays Lagoon - Part 5 of 12

We've finally beaten Natela. Now it's time to explore a seemingly endless desert and try not to die in it.

Philips Castle

Beating Natela will award you with the Silver Sword, which is stronger than the sword that you have now. Go equip it, then get out of Philips Castle. When you're outside, go to the east. There will be another door that would have been closed before beating Natela. Go inside, step on the crest in the middle of the room, and you'll be teleported to the entrance to the Dwarf Desert.

Dwarf Desert

You'll be spending a bit of time here.

The rock monsters will move slowly, and when they flash yellow, jump over their three-way fireball attack. Also, use magic against the wolves if you need to keep them away, but fight them with the sword if you can.

Your first destination is northwest of the entrance from Philips Castle, which will lead to the village of Denegul. Head there first. When you see the castle walls to the north, you'll know it's nearby.

Denegul

At the armor shop - the last you'll see in the game - you'll need 3000 gold to buy the Sonic Armor and the Great Shield. Equip them when you get them. Sadly, you'll have to go back to Voloh to buy elixirs if you desperately needs them, as the rest of the items, armor, shield and weapons in the game will have to be fought for.

One of the villagers is a village elder. He will tell you about the Moon Blade and how it is made from the Moon Stone, and that you will need it in the near future. Unfortunately, you won't get it until close to the end of the game. He will also hand you an ancient book about the Moon Blade. You now have the Ancient Book, and if you equip it and press L, you can read it.

You'll learn that the Moon Stone is in the Dwarf Cave, but it is blocked by rocks. If you manage to get in, you'll have to use the book. In the meantime, the village elder will hand you the Sky Staff, a much stronger staff than what you currently have.

By reading the Ancient Book, you'll learn of the legend of the Moon Stone, and how two lives - one of Light and one of Darkness - were sent down by the gods to protect the Moon Blade. As long as the balance between Light and Darkness are kept, the evil spirit will never return.

You'll also meet Thor here. He will tell you that he lost his pendant somewhere. When he asks for you to look for it, say yes. He will tell you that he may have lost it around Voloh, where he remembers having it last, and promises to give you something useful in return for bringing back his pendant.

Another villager will tell you that they met a scary lady in the desert. Could it be the one who kidnapped the princess...? Yet another villager will tell you that the Dwarf Cave is to the east and that it is a scary place to be.

At the restaurant, you'll learn that Princess Felicia is said to have possessed strange powers since she was born.

From here, you'll have to head all the way back to where you entered the Dwarf Desert from and head all the way back to the village of Voloh.

Elf Field and Voloh

At Voloh, the people you freed will tell you about Natela and the door that opens when you win the battle with Natela.

Another villager will tell you about how the Lakeland royal family had the power to make Lagoon Castle float in the air to protect the castle from disasters on the ground.

One of the villagers near the item shop will give you Thor's Pendant if you talk to them. With pendant in hand, head all the way to Denegul and talk to Thor again. He will give you the Powerful Mirror, which has the power to smash big rocks into pieces, meaning you will need it to enter the Dwarf Cave. Thor will then disappear again.

PrinceWatercress plays Lagoon - Part 4 of 12

We've made our way into Philips Castle, but before we can go elsewhere, we have to beat another boss.

Philips Castle

On the lower level, the jellyfish are slow and sometimes top in the middle of nowhere. The white hooded figures can shoot a three-way fireball shot. Hit them both with magic. You may be able to pin one of the jellyfish to a wall; if that happens, whack it repeatedly with the sword.

When you find a portcullis on the lower level, equip the Prison Key and walk into the door to find the prisoners. Equip the Movable Mantle, then talk to each person. You'll free them from the spell and get the Key of Philips, which lets you unlock a door and go further into Philips Castle.

With the Key of Philips in hand, you'll have to head all the way to the north of the castle and equip the Key of Philips to open the door. You'll enter the second floor, which has plenty of pits and some new enemies. The gray ghosts are fairly quick and will run at you if they see you. The clouds hurt you if you touch them, and if they are crackling with electricity, you can't hurt them. You can hit the clouds with the sword, but magic is better.

The Large Shield is better than the Small Shield you got back in Atland, so go equip it. Just like with the armor, the shield also comes with its own cosmetic changes.

When you reach the door in the center of the second floor, you'll face Natela. You'll need to be at least Level 12 before fighting them. Go in there with the Elixir equipped and keep striking at Natela until you win. You'll be nearly dead, but you'll get your health refilled.

PrinceWatercress plays Lagoon - Part 3 of 12

Accidentally delayed vocals dead ahead. At least you can tell to some extent what's being talked about.

Elf Field and Voloh

By talking to the old man near the entrance, you will find out that Philips Castle is at the east side of the village. Every 1000 years, the castle "goes to sleep" when hit by sunlight, and the three tablets with the spell to break the sleep are scattered around the village. It is imperative that the tablets are found, because there are people who are trapped inside the castle and cannot move due to the influence of the spell. One tablet it hidden on the plain, and another is in the castle. A man in blue has the last tablet.

By talking to the rest of the villagers, you'll find out that Philips Castle used to be beautiful, but since Princess Felicia disappeared from the castle, it has been controlled by demons. Before that, a spooky-looking woman was wandering around the castle, and that there may be a connection between her and the princess' disappearance. You'll also learn a man named Zerah came to the village, and that he is a black magic user. You'll learn that people are at Philips Castle because of the muddy water.

The armor shop is useless and has nothing that you can buy at all. The weapon shop, however, has Healing Pots as well as Elixirs, which heal all your HP no matter how much you have. The Shiny Ball allows you to restore HP and MP faster while on the battlefield just like you would in a town, but with this thing being worth 10000 gold, you probably won't be buying this thing at all.

The Mayor's House is all the way to the north. The Mayor will ask you to save the people trapped in Philips Castle, and gives you the Movable Mantle to allow the people trapped there to move again. You'll also get the Earth Staff, which allows you to cast magic when combined with the Fire Crystal. There are some places where you cannot use magic. Those places are boss battles, just so you know.

To equip magic, go to the Magic menu in the pause menu. You can then equip a staff and a crystal just like you did your weapons and armor.

The man in blue is Thor. If you talk to him, he will tell you that he has one of the tablets and wants to help you look for one of them. You'll get the Tablet of Faith, and from here, head out of the village and back into the Elf Field. This time around, Thor will slowly walk to a pre-determined area. Follow him, and take out enemies with your newly gained fireball from the Earth Staff and the Fire Crystal. Talk to Thor there, and you'll get the Tablet of Wish. You'll then look for the other tablet. Once again, follow Thor and head to the entrance to Philips Castle to the northeast.

Philips Castle

We won't be going very far here. Be sure to jump over the gaps in the bridge, and save before you make the jump. If you fall in the gap, it's instant death. From the bridge with the gap, go west and jump another gap to get the Tablet of Hope. Be careful with your jumps. Head back to Thor, who will be waiting for you, and talk to him again. You'll finally be able to head back north to the village of Voloh.

When you return, the old man at the entrance will thank you for finding the tablets. You'll get the spell (which thankfully you won't have to remember), then Thor will leave and you'll be able to get into Philips Castle.

Save your game, then head back to Philips Castle. This time around, you'll be able to enter the castle.

The knights will charge at you if they see you, and you will have to fight them with your sword as your magic will not work on them. You can do a bit of damage to them if you're powerful enough. The bigger guys with the gold armor and the capes can, however, take damage from both your sword and your magic. That's a good thing, because these guys are pretty fast.

The Key of Prison will be necessary as you go further downstairs in the castle, so you don't want to leave the entry floor without it. Ditto with the Gold Armor, which will not only increase your defense, but also change your appearance. I love the blue cape; it's a change of pace.

PrinceWatercress plays Lagoon - Part 2 of 12

We start the video with an escort mission. Thankfully, it's only one of two in the game, but you will soon see why these are annoying.

Gold Cave

As mentioned at the end of the last blog entry/video, Giles is painfully slow, and you'll have to wait for him and make sure not to get too far away from him. Thankfully, monsters will not attack him.

From here, you want to slowly guide Giles back to Atland.

Atland

Once you're back in town, Giles will thank you and tell you about the locked door in the cave. He will tell you to talk to the faith healer in town to learn more about it before leaving.

Head over to the southeast corner of the village. Giles will be in front of the house to tell you that she is in, in case you have trouble finding it. Go inside, and the faith healer will tell you there is a demon named Samson behind the door before handing off Samson's key to unlock the door and beat him, as the evil water from Lagoon Castle has made him more powerful and allowed him to call demons to the cave.

There are more townspeople in Atland now. An old woman will tell you that you will need a staff and a crystal to use magic, and that the Earth Staff is in the village of Voloh. Voloh is across the river, but nobody knows how to get there. Also, you'll find out that Giles is safe thanks to your efforts.

The restaurant manager will tell you that when the faith healer was young, there was a path from the Gold Cave to the Elf Field.

The other weapon shop that was closed earlier is now open, and you can buy two things there: a Healing Pot that will heal a little bit of your HP and a Shiny Stone that replenishes a little bit of your MP. Buy both, since you may need the Shiny Stone later and you used the Healing Pot to save Giles.

If you talk to the Gold Cave guards, they will tell you about the locked door on the first floor of the cave.

Back To The Gold Cave

The locked door isn't too far away from the entrance. Once you find it, go the menu, select Item, select Samson's Key and press A. Walk into the door with the key equipped, and you'll go in.

To beat Samson, you will have to get him to follow you into a corner so you can strike him repeatedly in the right leg. Be sure that you're jumping when he is so that the earthquakes he creates do not stun you. If he doesn't move very much as you do this, you're doing something right. Samson can still strike you with his ax and do some damage, so have your Healing Pot ready. To use an item, have it equipped by selecting it with A in the item menu and press the L button to use it. After some time, Samson's helmet will be replaced with an eye, so keep on piling on the damage however you can. Once you beat Samson, Samson will explode and you will get the Fire Crystal, which will help you cast Fire magic.

Before you go north, go back to Atland and buy a Healing Pot if you need one.

Elf Field

Once you enter this area, the exit from the cave will be buried by an earthquake, and you will no longer be able to go back to the Gold Cave or Atland.

The spiders and the flies will aggressively move at you; the flies will be even faster than the spiders. Beat them down and keep your health high so you can get some experience and head north to Voloh.

PrinceWatercress plays Lagoon - Part 1 of 12

It's time to get back into the things with The PrinceWatercress Let's Play channel, and this time, we're tackling a role-playing game originally for the Sharp X68000 that was re-tooled for Super Nintendo. This one is a little quirky and a little bit hard, and is more infamous and than famous.

You are Nasir, Champion of the Light. It is time to fulfill your destiny. The water around Lakeland has become muddy, and is seen as a sign of impending evil. Monsters are everywhere and need to be stopped. It's up to you to find out why the water is muddy and make it pure again. You'll then head to the town of Atland.

Atland

In the town, you can use the Control Pad to move around. You cannot move diagonally in this game; you can move only in the cardinal directions. To talk to people, you have to walk up to them and press the Y Button. X, A and B can be used from there to advance the text. By talking around, you'll find out that the Mayor is stressed out about something. Also, the largest house in the village is the Mayor's, and that house is in the southwest corner of the village. Another girl will tell you that her boyfriend works in the Gold Cave to the north with Giles. Remember that for later.

There are some doors you cannot enter yet. Don't worry about them for now.

You won't be able to buy anything in shops because you won't have any money. Press X, Y or B to back out in case you go into a shop early.

The Mayor's house is the place you want to go to advance the plot. The Mayor's wife will tell you that the Mayor went into the church. Head into the church near the fountain in the center of town and talk to the Mayor, who is to the left. As the Mayor talks about the dirty water and wonders what is causing it, someone shows up and mentions that someone has come out of the Gold Cave to the north badly wounded. You'll automatically warped over there. Talk to the guy on the ground, and he will mention that demons are in the cave and Giles is trapped. Talk to the Mayor again, and he will tell you to talk to the Cleric. Go back south to the town and enter the church again. Talk to the cleric, and he will call for a meeting at the Mayor's house before telling you to go rescue Giles.

Head back to the Mayor's House, and you'll talk to the Mayor again. The Mayor will give you 300 gold to buy everything in the armor shop to the north. The Gold Cave entrance will also be open to you.

At the armor shop, use the Control Pad and the A Button to buy the Short Sword, the Bandit Armor and Iron Shield. You'll have enough money for one of each, so do that. Afterwards, press Start to go to the menu. From here, you can see what items you have to equip, what magic you have, equip items and save your game at any time. You can also check your stats and see how much experience you have.

Use the Control Pad and the A button to select Equip, then press Right to equip your sword, armor and shield. Press A to go back to the gameplay screen. You're done in the village, so head north and enter the Gold Cave.

Gold Cave

The enemies are pretty simple. Wait for the blue blobs to get close to you and press A to strike at them. They can split and reproduce, but that's just more experience for you. You won't have a lot of range, so be ready to strike when they're about to get on top of you. Ditto for the gray demons that are moving around randomly.

Pressing B allows you to jump. Using it in conjunction with the Control Pad will let you jump over pits.

In case you take damage, just stand there and wait. Your HP will slowly recover automatically. Ditto for your MP, but you won't have to worry about casting spells until later. Your HP bar will be very short at the beginning of the game, but it will get bigger as you take down monsters...so keep your distance and let the monsters come to you so you can get some much needed experience.

At the bottom if your HP followed by the enemy's HP below that. To the right are the two magic items you have equipped as well as your HP. That's it for the simple HUD for this game, thankfully.

If you find a chest, go up to the south end of it and press Y to open it. Right now, you will find Gold, and while it will not be much, it will help a little later.

The Healing Pot will recover a little bit of your HP. Use it during a boss battle; you can recover HP by standing in a safe place in areas with regular enemies and you'll need the Healing Pot for when it gets really nasty. If you already have a Healing Pot when you open a chest that contains one, you'll get Gold instead, and the amount of Gold you get is your current level times 10. If you're at Level 3, you'll get 30 Gold.

The skeletons with the sword and shields will slowly move towards you, and while they have more HP, they are the easiest enemies in the Gold Cave to fight.

Eventually, you'll make it outside, and you'll find Giles. Unfortunately, Giles is injured and does not have the Healing Pot. Thankfully, you should have it, so when he asks for it, say "Yes." You'll still have to escort him out of the Gold Cave, and he moves around very slowly. Giles' pathfinding isn't too terrible, but you still don't want to go too fast.
