HCBailly plays Final Fantasy III - Part 11 of 44

The adventure continues with an epic battle at the top of the Tower of Owen!

When you talk to Medusa, she'll tell you that she's here to destroy the tower and send the continent down into whatever abyss it falls into, as per the orders of one Sir Zande. Then it's boss time.

Medusa is very strong against Black magic, so keep your party's HP high and let physical attacks win the day. If you have a Fighter in your party, he should be able to do quite a bit of damage by now.

Medusa will keep casting Break on you, but it always misses. Some boss fight this turned out to be.

When you beat Medusa, you'll be able to approach the reactor. It's about to blow. Desh's memory returns, and it turns out he's the surviving Ancient guardian of the Tower of Owen. He was awakened from an ages-long deep sleep when something happened to the tower. He has to go in the reactor and fix it...and he may sacrifice himself as a result.

He tells you to go to the island of the Dwarves after he stops the eddy in the strait. He'll warp you out of the tower once he's in. He goes in...

...and then he dies. After hearing the "extra party member is dead" theme, you're warped out.

Do yourself a favor and head to a nearby inn to recharge your HP and spell charges, then head north from the tower on the ship. The whirlpool will be gone, so you'll be able to head north and west to the island of the Dwarves.

Before we do that, though, head east and then south. There will be a village to the east with mountains on one side and the sea on the other. This is the village of Gisahl.

The magic shop will be just north of the village entrance. Get Ice 3 as well as Shade (which Paralyzes enemies). Break slowly Petrifies enemies (much like Medusa's version of the attack was supposed to do), but you have to cast it on an enemy twice in order to fully Petrify them, so it's not as good as it should be.

Libra scans an enemy's HP...and that's it. No weaknesses are revealed, just HP. Confu simply Confuses enemies, while Mute simply Mutes enemies so they can't cast spells.

The reviving pool is behind the inn. To the right of that is a shop that sells Magic Keys. Take some, as you'll need them for later in the game. Just to the left of the entrance is a secret passage that leads to the other side of the counter. Open the chest to get the Shuriken, the most powerful weapon in the game. You won't be able to use it until near the end of the game, though, so hold on to it.

Near the town's vegetable garden (where the guy inside will kick you out if you enter) is a Chocobo stable. THe old man will tell you about the Carrots (the Chocobos' favorite food) and the Fat Chocobo. Check the pots for Carrots. There is a secret passage here, but it leads to the Chocobo pen. It's a Chocobo!

There is a Carrot hidden in the lower-right corner of the map, along with two Magic Keys.

Head back to Argass Castle, and head to where the Towers are. Use a Magic Key on the left tower to enter it. Press A at the lower-right corner to open a passage to three chests, and get the Killer Bow, Bolt Arrows and Medusa Arrows. Bolt Arrows have Lightning-based properties, while Medusa Arrows can Petrify. The Medusa Arrows will prove useful near the end of the game.

The right tower leads to the Ice, Flame and Light Books, as well as Fire and Ice Arrows and the Scholar Robe. Equip the Scholar Robe on one of your Wizards.

You're now ready to head to the Dwarves' island, so Exit out of here.

At this point in the game, if you've been leveling up quite a bit, the Monk's fists (assuming you have one) will be accurate enough and also as powerful as any weapon he can equip in the game, so you can have him go bare-fisted if you want.
