PrinceWatercress plays StarTropics II: Zoda's Revenge - Part 16 of 16

The StarTropics series goes full circle as we square off against Zoda in the world where this all began...

Chapter 9

You'll end up in the present day on C-Island, and it looks much like it did in the first game, albeit with updated graphics. To the west is Coralcola, but this time, the music is more sinister.

When you head over there, everyone is a pig! Head to the hut in the northeast corner to talk to a kid, who till tell you that he went fishing and came back to a village where everyone was changed to a wild boar and odd sounds come out of the tunnel behind him. Go in there.

The first couple of rooms will play much like in the first game, and a few more from later in the tunnel show up sooner. The rest of the rooms have been changed. Alongside updated graphics, the dungeon music from the first game is also remixed here. The enemies have been replaced with the sequel's equivalents in the familiar rooms, however, and the beginner's trap with the Potions is gone. Just remember that you can move faster in this game than you can in the first one.

You'll find the three-way throwing starts from earlier points in the game shortly after the beginning. Also, the floor spikes do two hearts' worth of damage, so you can tank your way through to the second Potion if you need to.

The snake mini-boss from the first game shows up again as a mini-boss. Equip the throwing stars and position yourself just off-center and throw the stars at the snake after it opens its mouth and spits flames. Watch out for the diagonal flames, too. This one shouldn't be too hard.

After the mini-boss, you'll be in some brand-new corridors. Two of the tiles in the tiles in the shape of an arrow will give you Potions and throwing stars. From here, take the lower path, jump north for a Potion, jump east for another Potion on the next screen, jump east over the down arrow for a third Potion, then go north near the end for a fourth Potion. From here, jump over the spikes and get out of here. (You'll have to be fast to get that fourth Potion and survive.) Once you make your way out, you'll fall into a pitfall.

You'll then be in a black-and-white room. Jump on the tile that shows up, then get ready for a boss rush. You'll face Yum Yum, the giant scorpion, the King Tut head, Zoda-X, the skeleton miner, Zoda-Y and the dragon. Same strategies apply, but since you have the Ultra Psychic Shockwave, it may get a little easier. At the end, hit the two tiles for a pill and the way forward. The pill will refill all your health regardless of how much or how little you have left at the end of the boss rush.

When you enter the next room, you'll fight five of those alien creatures created by Zoda-Z. Four of them are purple, but one of them is pink. You need to equip the Ultra Psychic Shockwave and hit the pink one, as that is the only one that can take damage. When you destroy the pink one, the four purple ones converge to form Zoda-Z. Keep shooting diagonally at Zoda-Z with the Ultra Psychic Shock Wave, and jump over any projectiles that come your way. The big ones turn you into a wild boar temporarily and leave you unable to attack, so make sure those don't hit you. Thankfully, Zoda-Z stay sin place for a brief second before firing the big projectiles.

When Zoda-Z kneels down in defeat, it's not over yet, as he will take on a more alien form. He fights much like he did before, but he can also open his mouth and shoot down lightning that will send smaller projectiles everywhere. If he stops and hits the ground with his fists, two flames will come at you horizontally from opposite sides. Jump away from the flames to avoid them. If he spins around, run around the room in a circle until he stops on his own. If you take damage from this attack, he will also stop spinning. Running around the room is safer, though. Eventually, Zoda will go down.

You'll then be able to enter a cave and meet with Micah and the rest of the kids. She and the rest of the kids will check to see that the people are okay, and will tell you she will see you in the Chief's Hut. Go west to leave the cave and go back to the village.

When you return to the village, everyone will be human again. If you talk to the people, they will thank you for saving them and will know things about your journey (probably thanks to Micah). The village music the first game replays here, but it too is updated.

At the Chief's Hut, everyone in purple will thank you if you talk to them, while the purple person in the center is Micah. Talk to her, and she will tell you to put the Tetrads together. Talk to the Village Chief, and he will help put the Tetrads together in the shape of a scepter. The scepter will turn into an amulet...and King Hirocon, who is still alive! King Hirocon will be happy that his daughter Mica made it to Earth safely. He then states that when trouble brewed in Argonia, he sent Mica and some children away on an escape pod while he had his essence transferred into the Tetrads. Now, everyone is safe thanks to Mike, who is proclaimed a hero of Argonia by the King before he and the children of Argonia teleport back to their home planet. We then see one last cutscene of Mike running to the coast as they teleport, then the credits roll. You did it!
