PrinceWatercress plays Batman (PC Engine) - Part 1 of 5

Here's something you didn't expect. It's a Batman game, but instead of just beating up a bunch of bad guys either in a side-scroller or an action-platformer, you're in a maze game? Not surprisingly, this game only got a Japanese release, and that's too bad, because there's an interesting game here within the licensed property.

Unlike other Batman games, this one is a Pac-Man style maze game where you collect things, throw Batarangs at enemies and try not to run into anyone as you make yourself more powerful and complete each level.

Gotham City

I and II let you through your Batarangs while you move around with the Control Pad. Thankfully, you're not forced to move in one direction like in Pac-Man; you can stop by letting go of the Control Pad.

Your current score is on the upper-left corner, the current amount of time you have in the stage is in the upper-right corner, your current amount of lives is on the lower-left corner, and the number of items you have left to pick up in a stage is on the lower-right corner.

The boots speed Batman up. The L icon increases the range of the Batarang. The single Batarang increases the speed of your Batarangs. The multiple Batarang give you extra Batarangs - up to three - to throw at enemies at any given times. The bomb gets rid of all the enemies in the stage temporarily. The white star grants temporary invincibility, and as long as you're flashing, you can run into enemies and boot them out of the stage temporarily without having to stun them with Batarangs first.

Meanwhile, the green and brown containers are tainted make-up items that The Joker combined with chemicals in order to kill unsuspecting citizens of Gotham City. The number you have to pick up is in the lower-right corner, and when you bring that number to zero, it is on to the next

By throwing Batarangs at enemies, you can stun them. If you run into them while they are stunned and dizzy, you'll boot them out of the stage temporarily. They will come back, but stunning and running will always get you points, so take out enemies whenever you can. You'll get your first extra life at 10,000 points.

The black-and-white mimes just casually walk around. In Stage 3, you'll start seeing the blue mime, who will charge at you if you are lined up with him vertically or horizontally.

The red arrow will open up more of Stage 3 when you walk into it.

You cannot walk into the water; it acts more like a wall.

If you die at any point - and all deaths in this game are one-hit kills, by the way - all your speed, shot and range power-up levels go down one level, so you'll still have a chance to fight back even if you die.

The mime with the gun will shoot at you if you're lined with him. Thankfully, he can only have one bullet on-screen at any given time, and while you

In Stage 7, you'll have to deal with vans. Wait for the horn to sound, then cross the road after they speed by. They will run you over if they hit you. Also on Stage 7, stay on the left side of the crosswalk so enemies don't move into you.

Starting in Stage 9, some of the blue mimes will run fast as opposed to walking slowly. Be ready to anticipate where they are going and be ready to stun them with a boomerang and run into them to get them out of your way for a little while.

The flashing red triangle acts as teleporters. For most of the game, one red triangle will always be linked to another, and it's up to you to figure out which sets of teleporters are paired to one another. At other times in other stages, the teleporters will take you on a certain path from one teleporter to the next.

The flashing gold triangle will take you back to another teleporter and is one-way.

When stepping off a teleporter, be mindful of which direction you go. You may have to return to the same teleporter multiple times and exit it from different directions to get everything.

When you beat Stage 12, you'll get a brief cutscene, then you'll go to the Fluegelheim Museum.
