PrinceWatercress plays MediEvil - Part 1 of 24

In a time long ago there lived in the kingdom of Gallowmere a sorcerer named Zarok. This arrogant, pitiless ma hated his fellow citizens for their simple and peaceful ways, so he raised an army of demons and set out to take the realm for his own.

The King's champion, Sir Daniel Fortesque, led the militia into battle against this unholy horde. Songs are still sung of how he spearheaded the charge deep into the accursed multitude, how demons fell before him like wheat before the scythe, and how at last, though mortally wounded, he destroyed the sorcerer utterly.

Fortesque went down in history that day as the Hero of Gallowmere, and a time of peace began which was to last for a hundred years.

And then the sorcerer returned...

33 - The opening cutscene, which shows what really happened to Sir Dan: he fell at the first charge before he could do anything.

23 - Our first set of dialogue, where Sir Dan is reminded of what happened to him before being notified that he has a second chance at glory. The voice acting for the gargoyles have held up surprisingly well.

25 - Your short sword is here. Swing it around with Square, and hold and release Circle to power up a whirlwind slash that does a lot of damage to enemies.

46 - The default controls of the game.

20 - Pressing Triangle lets you read the books (why did I say "A"?). Press Triangle to stop reading them.

53 - We won't be able to break this wall until later.

06 - The throwing daggers. They are weak and in limited amounts, but you can replenish them later.

28 - Our first Life Bottle. These are like the Energy Tanks in the Metroid series. If you run out of life, the Life Bottle will refill it. You'll find more throughout the game.

04 - The Star Rune is the first of a few keys. Also, don't fall into deep pools or else you will lose a whole life bar.

49 - Attack the chest for a Copper Shield. Use Triangle to defend yourself. Shields do not last forever, and once their points are down to zero, they are gone. Gold is the currency of the game, and are used to buy weapons and supplies from the merchant gargoyles.

52 - The yellow hand holds the Star Rune. Walk into it with the Star Rune on your person to open up the nearby door. The green sprinkles of magic slime show where the exit is.

42 - The overworld map.

04 - The zombies are our first enemies. The short sword will make quick work of them, especially if there are a lot around and you use your power strike. As you beat enemies up, spirit energy will come out of them and you will raise the percentage underneath the picture of a chalice. When you fill this percentage up to 100%, you'll be able to pick up the chalice.

54 - The Earth Rune. Place this in a green hand.

19 - The fountain of rejuvenation refills your health as well as your Life Bottles. They are not infinite, however, and they will eventually run out.

46 - The Chaos Rune. Place this in a red hand.

35 - By striking the nearby angel, you can turn it around. Whichever gate it faces is the one that will be unlocked and opened.

00 - The Chalice, explained.

53 - This path leads to more gold and another Life Bottle, but watch out for the sneak attack from the zombies!

40 - We won't be able to go past these doors...yet.

43 - The merchant gargoyle. We'll be able to get more things as we progress through the game.

04 - The sides of the bridge are deep water and are definitely deadly. The game reminds you to pick up the Chalice here if you have filled it up but haven't collected it yet.

55 - The Chalice, collected.

39 - By collecting the Chalice, we head to the Hall of Heroes before going back to the overworld map. Whenever you pick up a chalice, one of the statues of the most legendary heroes in history will flash green, and you can stand on the floor panel with the chalice on it in front of the statue to talk to them, pay homage and get something useful. Sometimes it can be gold, a health-replenishing Energy Vial or even a Life Bottle, but you can also get weapons. Here, you'll be able to talk to Canny Tim, who did a lot better than you did in the war against Zarok, and get the Crossbow, which is more powerful than the throwing knives and has arrows than can bounce off walls. Also, I show off the arm weapon, which is Dan's left arm and can be thrown like a Boomerang with Square.
