PrinceWatercress plays Decap Attack - Part 1 of 7

The world has been scattered, and Max D. Cap has returned from the underworld to conquer the real world! And now I get to play this game and...it's not bad!

Max D. Cap has risen from the underworld to conquer the above world! Chuck D. Head, a mummy created by Frank N. Stein, is the only who can stop him from completely invading!

The game is a Westernization of Magical Hat no Buttobi Tabo! Daiboken, which is based on the anime series Magical Hat. Since the license for the anime was not obtained for the rest of the world, the game was completely changed when it was ported over to the West, hence why the theme is completely unlike anything else from Vic Tokai...and it's slightly easier compared to its Japanese counterpart, as you have a health bar instead of one hit deaths.

Abdomainland

World 1-1

You are Chuck D. Head. You're a mummy with eyes in his torso, because he has no head. He attacks by expanding his torso forward...and it looks pretty weird at first, but you get used to it.

You start with two hearts, but you can start with one or three just by going into the options menu at the title screen and changing the health option. Each heart is two hits, and finding a heart in a statue will let you replenish one whole heart.

The control pad lets you move around, A lets you go into your inventory, B lets you attack and C lets you jump. Pressing C repeatedly lets you kick your feet and glide in the air to go longer distances in mid-air than usual. Since the game plays just like Kid Kool and Psycho Fox, you will have to move forward for a second to get momentum. Thankfully, you never go too fast in this game.

Attacking the statues to the left of where you start will give you a skull. Pick it up, and you can throw it like a boomerang. When you throw it, it will arc downward and land on the floor, but will return to you regardless of where it goes or where it lands.

Throughout the game, you'll be attacking statues to find items. Pressing the A button will take you to the item screen. Here, you can see what items you have and also buy some items. The items are as follows:

Xenon (red potion): Causes an earthquake that destroys all enemies.

Swill (blue potion): This acts as a shield that protects you.

Trioxy (yellow potion): This lets you use a powerful ball of light as a weapon.

Freeiz (green potion): Freezes all on-screen enemies.

Claxy (double test tube): Makes you faster and increases your jump height.

OozeO2 (orange potion): Increases the strength and range of your torso attack.

Coins: Let you buy items. Find them in statues.

The blank spot all the way to the left is the specific item you need to find in each land, and you cannot leave the land until you find it.

Pressing A will let you see item descriptions and use items. Pressing B lets you back out of item descriptions so you can select another item.

You can also jump on enemies to stun them. Jump on them multiple times to bury them into the ground. If you keep pressing the jump button in mid-air, you can kick your feet over and over to glide long distances.

There are all sorts of bad guys here, such as werewolves, blackbirds and guys that shoot arrows at you.

If you fall in lava, you'll die instantly, so keep running across those breakaway bridges.

The blocks with the arrows pointing up act as springboards. Step on them to get launched upwards.

The clouds here act as platforms. So do the red skulls on top of some of the trees.

If you run off the edge of a platform, Chuck will kick his feet back and forth in Looney Tunes-esque fashion. You can press Down to make him stop and drop downwards.

The poles here can be used to launch yourself forward. If you land directly on them, you can get a different sound which indicates that you landed on it properly and will therefore get the maximum distance. If you happen to be holding Down while you land properly in the center of the top of the pole, you'll absorbed the blood from one of the circles and replenish your health, which is rather nice and can save you, especially in the later lands.

World 1-2

You'll be climbing uphill here, as this is a completely vertical stage. You can stand on the trees if you need a boost to where you want to go.

We have new left arrow and right arrow tiles that launch you left and right, much like the up arrows that work as springboards. To scale these walls, hold the D-Pad in the direction they launch you and keep pressing the jump button to float.

World 1-3

If you jump at the start, you'll scroll the screen down a bit.

Go underneath the start of the level and go right. You'll find a strange blue potion, and if you pick it up, a fanfare will play. Turns out there are some items in the game that Dr. Frank N. Stein wants you to pick up throughout the game, and you're required to pick them up if you want to continue with the game.

From there, make your way to the left to face the boss.

The boss here is a witch doctor. You can stand on his head until he throws the mask that he wears, which you'll definitely want to avoid. He'll throw it straight at you at first, but he'll also throw it in a figure eight pattern. When he throws it straight at you, go all the way to the side of the screen opposite him. The mask will barely miss you.

When you beat the boss, you'll be able to go left and clear Abdomainland.

Bonus Stage

At the end of every world, you'll take on a bonus stage. You can use one coin to place one Chuck on a path. Provided that you have enough coins, you can place a Chuck on every path if you desire. This is no different from the bonus areas in Super Mario Land 2 or Kid Dracula. If any of the Chucks see a stone bridge, they have to cross it no matter what.

When they reach the end of the path, you'll come across another path that scrolls endlessly. Stop it with the press of a button, and the Chucks you placed will make their way to whatever item is at the end. Holes give you nothing. The second path works just like the first one. The machine at the left is a one-up, and the number it stops on when you stop the second path dictates how many lives you'll get from it.

When you beat one of the levels, it will be placed back on its rightful spot on the map.
