Of all the Sonic games I play, I play this one. Makes for a good Game Gear game, that's for sure.
When you start the game, you'll choose between Sonic and Tails. Tails is the easy mode, while Sonic is the normal mode with the Chaos Emeralds.
Turquoise Hill Zone
The Control Pad lets you move around, duck down and look up and down, and the buttons let you jump. Just like in every other Sonic game, the longer you go in one direction. Holding Up and repeatedly pressing 1 or 2 lets you charge Sonic up for a fast run. Holding Down and repeatedly pressing 1 or 2 will allow you to utilize the spin dash, which lets you break through certain walls.
Rings are in this game, just like all the other Sonic games. If you collect 100 rings, you'll head to a bonus area where you can get a Chaos Emerald, and there are five of these in all. Also, rings work like an extra hit, and if you run into an enemy or jump onto spikes without enemies,
The monitors give you power-ups. The monitor with the big shoe on it turns Sonic's shoes into rockets for a few seconds, and you can fly in any direction until the music stops. The sparkles give you temporary invincibility.
There are enemies here, but they're sparsely placed due to the Game Gear being small and the action being zoomed in compared to other games. As long as you're doing the usual somersault jumps you can defeat them, though you will have to hold Down while running to roll into some, like the Motobugs with the springs on top of them.
Besides the spring Motobugs, there are also springs throughout the game that you can jump on, and they can take you to higher places.
The bridges that twirl around can be crossed by running or rolling past them without stopping and/or losing a ton of speed.
The first bonus stage has you flying around on rocket shoes. The big rings are worth 10 rings apiece, and you can get quite a few bonus lives out of them. Collecting 100 rings in a bonus stage will also net you a continue. You'll eventually find the Blue Chaos Emerald in the middle, and once you grab it, you'll end the bonus stage and go on to the next act. Keep an eye on the timer in the upper-left so that you don't run out of time before you get the Chaos Emerald, or you will have to work you way back to the bonus area again. There are three acts in each level, with the third act always being the boss.
The second bonus stage has you jumping upwards from one platform to another. There are some springs that act as "pogo sticks" to other platforms when jumped on, and when you are within reach of a platform, you can press a button again to jump off and get to the platform. There is also a monitor with a clock on it that stops time for a few seconds, giving you extra time to get to the top where you can find the Yellow Chaos Emerald.
The boss of the third act - which is very short and has no enemies - is a giant Motobug with a spring on the top of it. Just keep hitting the face with the spin dash until you do it five times. After that, the boss is defeated.
