PrinceWatercress plays Incantation - The Longplay

And now...the whole game in one video. I'm surprised how quickly I got through this one when I sat down to play it in one sitting for this video.

First | Previous

Stage 1

Left and Right let you move around, Down lets you duck, A lets you run when held, B jumps, Y shoots and holding L and R while moving the Control Pad lets you move the game camera around. (I don't notice this one until the second video, but it's there and it's nice to utilize something like this again.)

The character on the title screen (and box art) has blonde hair, but he has brown hair in the game.

At the top of the screen, from left to right, is the current amount of lives you have, the current amount of health you have, the amount of bonus points you have and your current weapon.

Collect coins for bonus points. 100 bonus points will net you an extra life at the end of a stage.

The red bats will move up and down as they fly at you. Shoot them down to get rid of them. They can also home in on you if you are above where it is.

Shooting down chests will open them up for items. The golden heart gives you an extra life.

Crystal balls will teleport you to other areas when you shoot them.

The wheat icons are your main collectible. You'll need to pick up three to get past the toll booth, or else you'll have to backtrack to find which ones you missed.

The fireball in the chest in the stand-alone area you teleport to has a fireball icon that changes your default double helix shot - which is quite weak - into a much more powerful fireball. As for the purple guy near it, stand on the chest to hit him.

You cannot kill the pumpkins; just walk under them when they are in mid-air.

The coins that enemies leave when they die and make the screen glow green give ten bonus points.

The boss is a giant gremlin-looking guy. After spitting two balls at you, he then leaps at you. Shoot at him and his balls, then walk under him when he leaps. The boss is simple enough.

Stage 2

Watch out with the green enemies who leap around; they can catch you out from behind foreground walls.

The goblets are worth three bonus points.

The star shots are homing missiles; I usually avoid these as the fireballs are much faster.

The bags are worth two bonus points.

The explosive rocks bounce along the ground and does a lot of damage to any enemy it hits.

The tornadoes do not hurt you, but they do bounce you back if you run into them.

If you die at any point, you'll always go all the way back to the beginning and you'll have to do everything over again. Also, there are no items that refill your health in this game, so you'll have to play well to get through a stage. It should also be mentioned that when you get hit, you perform this annoying bounce after you jump up and land on the ground after getting hit.

The boss is the same as last time, but he is brown instead of purple and can shoot his tail at you if you are too close to him. If that happens, you'll need to destroy the tail to get rid of it.

Stage 3

Once you shoot the first crystal ball, be sure to get the first wheat icon. If you miss it, don't worry; there will be three more on the way down (along with a ton of coins) in the next area the next crystal ball takes you.

Also, watch out for those purple plants. You can't kill them, and their fireballs will travel pretty quickly.

There is a treasure chest that gives you a bomb weapon; this weapon lets you destroy twisted parts of the floor and do damage to enemies.

Destroy the floor near the final crystal ball to find a hidden extra life.

The boss here is a giant queen ant. Avoid the stalactites will shooting bombs at the boss.

Stage 4

This stage is a bit of a maze, but it is by no means difficulty. The crystal ball up and all the way to the right at the start takes you to a hidden area with a ton of bonus coins and a 1-Up.

This stage is also the first stage where you will want to utilize the ability to hold L or R to move the camera with the Control Pad.

Be sure to jump over any spikes that you see, as they will damage you.

The golden harp gives you four bonus points.

Platforms will only move once you've jumped onto them for the first time.

The boss is the same as the last stage.

Stage 5

For this one, you'll want to go up and get the wheat stalk at the start, then you'll want to concentrate on going all the way down. If you know what you're doing, go ahead and get all the bonus points you can, but you're better off going all the way down before the purple plants fry you to death with fireballs.

Once you hit the crystal ball at the bottom, take care getting to the top. The boss is the same as the last two stages.

Stage 6

We're now in the swamp.

The worst enemy in the swamp stages are the pink larva that crawl across the floor underwater. Duck down to ensure you hit them. These enemies can hide behind the foreground elements on the swamp water floor, so be careful down there.

When you are underwater, you will have a second health bar above the one you already had. This is your oxygen meter, and if you ever go underwater, you will eventually have to resurface out of the water before that meter runs out; otherwise, you will slowly start losing health. There are bubbles floating upwards in the water at the ground floor, and if you press and hold B to jump into them, you'll be able to resurface easily. You'll have to switch from the surface to the water when necessary to find the wheat stalks and pay the toll.

The mosquitoes move up and down as they move back and forth, but as long as you know where they turn around at, they're easy to take care of.

The jagged spikes on the ground are definitely spikes; don't leap into them.

The boss is a giant frog. Jump over the rocks that it spits at you as you continually fire at it, then run under it to the other side of the screen when it jumps to ensure you don't get squished. From there, the boss' pattern repeats, making this yet another easy boss.

Stage 7

The water here is low, but you'll have to destroy some undersea projectiles. Also, some of the lily pads are trampolines.

Go up the first tree you see and go left for a wheat icon. Kill the mosquito when it's over the mid-air platform to get the coin it drops.

Thankfully, finding everything else is easy.

The boss is the same as last time.

Stage 8

Watch out at the beginning, as some of the mosquitoes will drop coins when killed and there are plenty of spikes you want to avoid on the underwater floor. Other than that, the water might be a bit more deep, but at least you don't have any new hazards to deal with.

The boss is the same as last time...again.

Stage 9

Avoid the rocks that are dropping down as you run and jump to the platform to the left. Run and jump to the left after that for the first stalk of wheat. Take the moving platform with the face up and take care of the rock throwing guy. From here, move the camera all the way to the left and shoot left. If you hear a squishing sound, you just activated a moving platform that will go all the way to the right. Jump on it and ride it up, and take care of the guy you just stayed away from if you want to.

Jump to the left, avoid the rock as you run to the next platform with a face, and ride that platform up. As soon as you're able to jump to the right to a platform, do so or else you'll get smacked with a rock, which is instant death. Take out the two guys who nearly killed you on the way there, then go left for the second stalk of wheat.

To the right is another rock dropper. Avoid the rocks and jump on the treasure chest all the way to the right to jump upwards, then hit the switch to the left. Move past the switch to the left, then drop off the edge. Before jumping on the platform with the face, shoot down the rock dropper you just avoided on the way up there. You'll be able to go to another stone platform. Watch out for death from above as you get to and jump on the chest to the right. You'll land on a platform just above the rock dropper. Jump to the left over the rock dropper. Take the rock dropper out. You've taken out all the enemies. Go all the way to the left and jump your way to the third stalk of wheat, then shoot the crystal ball to face the boss.

The boss is a guy on a green platform of some sort who drops bombs at you. Run under him to avoid the bombs, and take care not to run into the explosions. When the guy hovers just low enough for you to hit him, jump up and hit him as much as you can. Eventually, he will go all the way up to safety temporarily before returning to attack you again. As long as you are careful, you should be able to beat this guy.

City 1

We're getting close to the end of the game here. Watch out for mice that run back and forth across the stage, and remember that you don't have to duck down to shoot them. You'll also have to shoot down cannons from a distance to avoid being blasted by them. Also, the red demon bats also make a return appearance here.

There are also bottomless pits at the bottom of the stage every so often, so be sure to use the camera to look down before you stop leaping off balconies and rooftops. Also, don't press Down on platforms; you may accidentally fall to your doom.

Don't forget to use the barrels to go upwards. They act as trampolines here.

While there is treasure in this stage, it is quite hard to do it.

The boss from last time is back, but he is on a red thing instead of a green thing and he takes far fewer hits to defeat.

City 2

This one is more of the stage, though you will be doing a little more moving around and looking around with the camera than you did in City 1. Once again, don't press Down while above ground level (unless you're moving the camera by holding the shoulder buttons, which you should hold first before using the Control Pad).

The boss is the same as last time. He shouldn't take long at all to beat.

Chaos Warrior

The game scrolls to the left at the beginning, then you meet the boss. The final boss is a green armored guy, who is supposed to be a wizard. You'll want to keep your distance and go for his face, and you'll also want to shoot down his hands. Also, stay on the far right unless the boss is there. Whenever you hit the boss, the larva on the upper platform drop down, and when you destroy them, more larva will show up to take their place. For best results, go to the left side, but don't shoot him. Let him come to you, then run under him. Believe it or not, you can run under the final boss to get away from him. Just make sure he doesn't lower himself.down on you when you do it.

Once you destroy the arms, the Chaos Warrior will shoot fireballs at you, and those fireball will drop to the ground. As long as you are directly below his head, he can't hit you, and you can get him to go to the left before running to the right and shooting him in the face.

Believe it or not, there is supposed to be a third form when the boss' health meter (yes, the Chaos Warrior has a health bar at the top) is down to a third of a full bar, but for some reason, the boss dies when that happens. I want to think bad coding is at work, and I didn't notice this until playing the video back. Once the screen flashes white, the game is over and you get a one-screen ending. Well, that was something.
