After having watched Kikoskia play it a few years prior, I take a shot at it. Here's the Sega Genesis version. And yes, I'm keeping most of the original text intact.
As soon as you see the title screen, you will instantly be blinded by the sequins of Barbie's dress. THE CUTENESS IT BLINDS ME
After another screen where you choose between one and two players (something that is Sega Genesis-exclusive) as well as the difficulty, you'll be able to start playing. The only way you'll choose two players is:
A. The other player is a little girl.
B. You want the other person to shove the controller up your ass.
Unlike the Super Nintendo version, you also have a "Free Play" option that lets you play the Camera and Shopping Bag mini-games without going through the main game.
Level 1
Unlike the Super Nintendo version, you'll see what the power-ups do before you start.
The Camera takes-you to the make-up room, and the Shopping Bag takes you to the dressing room. I'll explain these as we go through the game.
The "B" stars give you 50 points, while the regular star gives you 25. The hearts with the "B" on them are extra chances. Think of them as hit points, if you will.
There is a Barbie sign in the center of the top screen, and as you go through more of the game, more of the lights light up. When you light the whole sign up, you've beaten the game.
Anyway, you'll start off driving through Hollywood in a pink convertible. Avoid other cars to avoid losing chances, and collect whatever you can.
Your abilities are going slow, normal speed, and fast. That's it. And it's like this the whole game. Hold A to speed up and hold B to slow down. That's it.
Shopping Bag
The shopping bag always shows up in the first half of a level.
Whenever you pick up the shopping bag, the screen will fade out and fade back in, showing you a magazine cover with Barbie on it. You'll have to match Barbie's wardrobe down to the color...so pay attention, because you won't be able to look at it again.
Pick the style that Barbie was wearing, then change the colors with the buttons. That's all there is to it, really.
Whatever you match, you'll get bonus points. If you match all three things, you'll get an extra 100 points.
Catwalk Practice
When you finally make it to the end of the first area in a level, you'll be on the catwalk practice. Pay attention to the pink Genesis controller on the bottom of the screen and you'll find out what you need to do. You'll be on the real catwalk at the end of the level.
Thankfully, you can practice as long as you want so you can pull it off perfectly at the end of the level in case you're not a quick study.
When you come back to the level, you'll be going in reverse.
Camera
The Camera always shows up in the second half of a level.
When you get the Camera, you'll see a close-up picture of Barbie wearing lipstick and earrings and whatnot.
You'll have to match the earrings, fingernail polish, lipstick, eyeliner and hairstyle to get a total of 320 bonus points. Just move the cursor with the Control Pad and press A and B to cycle through all the options for each thing. Yay.
Anyway, the second part of the level is the same as the first. Don't run into anything and collect whatever you can until you drive off the screen.
Catwalk
Remember the Catwalk practice screen? Do the exact same commands that the practice room for the level told you to do, and you'll complete it. Not that hard.
After that, game and bonus points get tallied up, and you find out what your score is. lolUselessPoints
Level 2
Now you're on the beach.
Here, you'll be in-line skating in what is obviously the most late 1980s/early 1990s skate gear anyone has ever seen. Avoid people, Frisbees, beach balls and seagulls.
The Shopping Bag game here has Barbie in swimsuits...and some of them are hideous. Ugh. Also, Barbie looks like a prostitute in the catwalk segment at the end. I blame the strapless bikini top and pink everything.
Level 3
*gasp* Barbie's walking! In a ski resort, no less!
Avoid ice on the ground, people and snowballs.
The Shopping Bag segment has her in winter gear (appropriately). Same for the catwalk segment.
Not much to say about this level.
Level 4
It's a bicycle ride through the park. Yeesh, this is even worse than that time I covered Georg Glaxo.
The hazards here are the same as Level 2, except there aren't any beach balls. Also, the ground covered by Barbie's bike is huge, almost as big as the car in Level 1. If something touches even the back wheel, you're taking a hit.
The Shopping Bag segment actually has her dressed up like a Hollywood star. At least the clothes in this one are actually beyond halfway decent.
When you beat the catwalk segment, you'll see Barbie in the same outfit she was wearing in the title screen, and Ken is there with her.
That's all for this one.
