LovelyCheesePizza plays Home Alone for Game Boy - Part 5 of 5

We beat the game after an interesting boss battle, and that glitch with the lives is explained as best as I can explain it. This was definitely an interesting one.

Stage 4 (continued)

When you go down the ladder leading out of the right-most screen of the attic, if you can position your jump just right and press Up at the right time, you can get a pizza box worth a 1-Up and...wait. Apparently due to the "10 lives glitch" we saw earlier, he goes to 14 lives.

Wait a minute. I know what's going on here. Apparently the number is listed in decimal form, and acts that way when you gain a life. But when you lose one, it apparently treats it like a hexadecimal number. So when AMF1534/LovelyCheesePizza died with 10 lives, instead of going to "09" lives, he went down to "0F." In other words, he gained six lives when he died. He then dropped down to "0D" through regular gameplay. It's like the continue screen in Ninja Gaiden for Sega Master System all over again. I'm assuming that when you have a single "1" for the number of lives you have left and you die, you go straight to the game over screen, so when he grabbed the 1-up, it reset to its decimal representation. If not, then it simply reset the number from hexadecimal back to its decimal equivalent.

TL;DR: Somebody got their number systems messed up when it came to coding the game; therefore the game doesn't seem to expect you to get 10 lives and then die.

There is another set of switches for the lights, and it works much like it did in the last stage. To turn all the lights on, it's down, up, up, up, down.

Believe it or not, there are three different levels for this wing. After going upstairs and through the attic, you'll have to go to the right and then go down some stairs to find the basement. Not surprisingly, this level is the biggest of the four. Not surprisingly, you'll be looking around in a lot of places to find all the pets that you need to save, but it will be worth it if you got this far.

Also, the guys with the black suits and hats shoot at you here! Be careful!

When you finally make it into the basement, you'll be dealing with air vents trying to eat you. The last one on the second screen as well as the first and thirds one on the third screen will fly up and to the right when you get close. As for the fourth screen, you will have to inch towards them to get them to move. The first two vents on the fourth screen will move straight up, while the third and fourth move different: the the third moves straight up while the fourth one flies up and to the right at the same time the third one moves.

After this match, you'll finally meet Harry and Marv! First, you'll face Harry. Hope you saved your rifle shots for this one. Equip it, and jump up and shoot him in the face as he looks at you. If you need to jump over him, that is what the illogically placed sinks are for.

After beating Harry, head left to face Marv. For this one, you'll want to go up to the window that is darker than the other two and open it when Marv is down and to the left of it. The next door neighbor will strike with the snow shovel, and after enough hits Marv will go down. You can use the chairs to jump over Marv, but be careful.

To the left of this, you'll head to the vault and get all the pets in there. But you're not done yet. After this, you fight...the furnace?!? Yep, the furnace that Kevin steeled himself up to get near while in the basement during the movie is the final boss. I gotta hand this to the developers; this was an interesting idea.

There is a cookie if jump up and to the right off the chair, which you will also use to jump over the fireballs if need be. Believe it or not, this is the one battle where your water gun - the same one that stunned the guys in the black suits and hats and did jack all against everyone else - is the weapon you have to use. Squirt into the furnace when it opens its door, and as you do damage, one eye will disappear followed by the other. Keep going and keep avoiding those fireballs, and you'll finally defeat the furnace.

After this battle, Kevin will finally be reunited with his mom, Harry and Marv will be in jail, and the game ends. Congratulations!
