LovelyCheesePizza plays Home Alone for Game Boy - Part 1 of 5

Harry and Mary are out of prison, and they're ready for a huge score in Kevin McAllister's home. Little do they know that Kevin, who has accidentally been left home alone, is ready for them...

In memory of John Heard.

Stage 1

It's the same as the Super Nintendo version (more or less), except it's all black-and-white and the HUD is re-done to fit the Game Boy's screen.

At the top, from left to right, is the amount of pizza you have collected, the current weapon that you have equipped, the amount of valuables that you are currently carrying, and the amount of valuables left to pick up in the level and drop in the safe.

The pizza helps you get an extra life. To get one, all you have to do is find eight slices to fill up the entire pie.

You start out with a water gun, which will let you stun enemies, but you will find other weapons later on.

At the bottom is your current score, the amount of lives you have, and the amount of hits you can take before you lose a life.

The Control Pad not only lets you move around, but it also lets you examine things in the background such as dresser drawers, clothes hampers and even toilet if you press Up. Be sure to do this whenever you can; this will allow you to explore the house and find valuables, but also uncover power-ups such as pizza slices and other weapons.

Go up or down stairs, use Up or Down on the Control Pad as necessary to go up or down them when you are at the base.

You will find valuables everywhere: on shelves, in drawers and even in plain sight. Be on the look-out. In this first stage, you'll be hunting for jewelry and other valuables, such as watches, candlesticks and bracelets.

There are two levels of the house in every level: the upper level and the lower level. You will always start on the upper level, and find the entrance to the basement on the lower level. A staircase connects both levels to each other.

If you see a bad guy, hit them with the water gun a few times to stun them temporarily. Some enemies may drop valuables after being stunned. The banana peels can be used to get rid of them permanently if they step onto them. The bowling balls can be used to knock other things down, like trophies, that can get rid of enemies from above if your timing is good.

The men in the black suits and coats can easily be stunned with the water gun, but the more muscular guys move slowly towards you and can be tough to get rid of. You'll need baseballs in order to get rid of them. Also, if you wait too long, they will start stomping the floor, and a part of the ceiling will drop on you in an attempt to take one of your precious hit points away. The guys in grey with the baseball caps can chase you from one screen to another a little more quickly, much like the muscular guys can. They can be stunned, but not for long, so you will have to be fast to deal with them.

When you see the laundry chute in the wall, interact with it by pressing Up on the Control Pad. This will allow you to drop what you are carrying down the chute into a safe somewhere in the house. You can only carry six valuables at a time, so you will want to remember where a laundry chute is.

When in a bathroom, stand on a sink, bathtub or toilet and press Up to find things. You can even leap super-high into the air by standing on the toilet itself and pressing Up for a super-jump, which may come in handy...

Cookies will replenish one hit point if you find one.

If you find a treasure when an enemy is on-screen, pick it up as quickly as possible; otherwise, the bad guy will scurry towards it and pick it up. If that happens, you won't be able to get it back.

The things that look like toy cars on the floor are traps and can hurt you if you step into them. Luckily, they can also kill the enemies if they step onto them.

Sometimes, if you jump into a certain spot and press Up, you may find a power-up out of thin air. Try this out with paintings that you can jump toward, as well as television screens on entertainment center shelves.

There is one spot where a treasure will land on a table that you cannot stand on. If you keep jumping into the table, it will eventually move towards you and you can grab it.

When you have placed enough valuables down the laundry chute, a key will show up near the locked door on the lower level. Once you unlock it and enter the basement, there is no turning back.

In the basement, you'll have to head left and avoid the bugs on your way to the other end of the room. Some of the spiders will stay in one place on the floor, while others will either move up and down or back and forth.

You'll soon face a bigger spider that moves back and forth. This is your first boss. There is a brick with a much thicker black outline than all the rest. Jump into it to knock it down, and if your timing is right, it will fall down right on the boss. You'll have to do this numerous times without touching the boss, which gets faster with each hit.

After five hits, the boss is down. Go to the left, and you'll throw everything in the safe to start the next level. If you found extra valuables beyond the minimum that the game wants you to find, you'll be rewarded with a slice of pizza for each one and you'll get closer to another extra life, so make sure you nab all the valuables you can.

Stage 2

After throwing all the jewelry you can find into the safe, Kevin realizes there are more things to protect in another wing of the house: toys. Stay tuned!
