HCBailly plays Soul Blazer - Part 1 of 33

Wise men tell a tale late at night of a great King destroyed by the temptation of evil.

The Freil Empire, as it was called in those days, was ruled by a powerful man, King Magridd.

It seems most people thought the King was a fair and kind ruler. There were some, however, who felt the King himself was ruled by greed.

One day the King happened to over hear two guards talking about a man named Dr. Leo. Now Dr. Leo was considered by all to be a great inventor and a genius.

The King stayed up many nights wondering how he could use this great inventor to make him even more wealthy.

All of the sudden the King has an idea. He ordered his guards to capture Dr. Leo and bring him to the castle at once!

Soon Dr. Leo was brought to the castle.

The King confined him in a smallroom and ordered him to invent a machine that would summon the King of evil, Deathtoll.

Dr. Leo finally completed the machine. The King instantly called upon Death tool, hoping they might strike a deal.

After many days the deal was complete. The King would bring Deathtoll all living creatures, and in return, Deathtoll would give him a gold piece for each.

One by one, all living creatures began to disappear. Soon the world was completely empty.

Two people were watching this catastrophe, the Master, and you, his follower.

"The King was very foolish to be tempted by evil, however I will give him another chance. You must go down to Earth and revive the World!" the Master said.

On a ray of light you descended to Earth..... ..A warrior sent to revive the living and punish evil. A SOUL BLAZER!!

By the way, Deathtoll is known as Dark Gaia (or the Devil) and the Master is known as Gaia (or God) in Japan. Blame Nintendo's censorship.

When you start the game, you'll have four save games to choose from, and you can erase a file if necessary to make room for a new one.

Grass Valley Shrine

This is where the game starts. The Master tells you that since you will be able to speak with all living things, you should have a name. You can create any name you want as long as it fits within the eight-character limit.

"BS" lets you erase the last character inputted, of course.

Once you input your name, the Master will tell you to save the world for all creatures.

There are three panels you can step on, but only one is blue and will allow you access to any place whatsoever: the one on the left. Walk onto it and you'll be teleported into another area.

Trial Room

This room is pretty simple. There is only one monster lair here, and it's full of goblins. The goblins can be destroyed very easily.

To open a treasure chest, simply walk into the south side of it. That's it. The treasure chest here will give you the Sword of Life. That's a good thing, because there is armor and weapons in this game and you don't start out with any.

To equip the sword (or armor, magic or an item), press the X button to go to the equipment screen. Press the B button - the action button in this game - to select what you want to equip (in this case, "Wep." or Weapon), then select what you want to equip with the Control Pad and press B again. Simple as that.

Now that you have a weapon equipped, you can swing it by pressing the B button during gameplay. Thankfully, the goblins are pretty easy to take down. Keep swinging when they come straight for you. They will go down in one hit. When they leave a gem behind, pick it up. The monsters will also give experience points when you kill them. You'll need them to grow stronger. Don't forget, you can always check the status screen to see how much experience you need for the next level, which will increase your maximum health. Just press the A button.

Just remember that when monsters come out of the monster lairs, they will be invincible for a second or two after they come out. When they stop flashing, that's your chance to strike.

The heads up display is pretty simple. On the top is your current level, the amount of experience points you have and the number of gems you have. Below that is your health bar, which shows how much health you currently have. If you are fighting a monster, the monster's health bar will be located below yours.

When all the monsters of a certain group are destroyed, their monster lair will change appearance. Step on the monster lair and you will free the soul of a living being. It may be a soul or a useful item such as a platform. You'll also restore a little bit of your health in case you're hurt.

The soul you save here will tell you he used to live in the sky much like you and the Master. Now he lives on Earth, away from the Master. He'll tell you that all the creatures captured by Deathtoll are sealed in monster lairs. He tells you to free everyone just like you did him, as even the release of a small tree or creature can prove beneficial.

The old man will also give you the Flame Ball Magic, the first Magic you'll get in the game. He then joins you in the form of the Soul of Magician so he can help you with his magic, which requires gems to use. He will explain what the gems are (those gold spheres the goblins dropped) before telling you to return to the Grass Valley Shrine. To do that, just leave the same way you came in: the teleporter in the lower-left corner of the room.

The Flame Ball Magic lets you shoot a fireball straight to the end of the screen in the direction you are facing. To use it, equip the Flame Ball Magic first, then press Y to use it. The Flame Ball Magic requires four gems to use.

There will be another blue panel to step on to the south when you return to the shrine. Step on it to go to the next area.

Also, be sure to step on the gold tile to the north if you need to save your game for whatever reason.

Grass Valley Highlands

When you appear here, there will be nothing. Start by making your way all the way to the left and going down the flight of stairs. Go to the right and you'll come across a potted tulip (which also makes an appearance in Illusion of Gaia). When you approach it, it will tell you there are many creatures being held in the Underground Castle, and if you can release them, the town will be reconstructed. The entrance will be to the right. Go in.

Underground Castle

The slightly bigger gold gem is worth five gems.

Aside from the goblins that you fought in the Trial Room making a return appearance, you'll also fight a few new monsters. The brown plants will move away from you, and spawn in groups of several at a time as you make your way further into the castle. The blue balls look like puddles of water until you approach, causing them to charge at you. The torches shoot projectiles if left on-screen long enough.

Any enemies that do not come from monster lairs will regenerate when you leave a dungeon and come back to it.

Destroying the monsters and stepping on the panels the monster lairs leave behind when they disappear will allow you to not only continue through the Underground Castle, but also free the souls of the townspeople. When you free a villager, you'll be brought back to the village temporarily, and you'll see the town spring to life as buildings appear right before your eyes. You can also uncover treasure chests by fighting monsters, too.

The Medical Herb will refill your HP if your health is depleted as long as it is equipped.

As you fight, you'll notice that if you hit enemies from the side with the edge of your sword swing as opposed to when they're right in front of you, your strikes will be more accurate.

You'll come across a blue jewel. When you're able to approach it, a fairy will pop out of it and remind you to equip things you want to use, or else they won't work. You'll also get some experience points and a means to transport back to the Grass Valley Highlands.

The first soul you'll free is an old woman, while the second is the tool shop owner.
