PrinceWatercress plays Aladdin (Super Nintendo) - Part 1 of 7

In the early 1990s, the Super Nintendo marked the beginning of the end of the Disney-Capcom era, as the rights to Disney properties went to Virgin, who would make the video game adaptation of The Jungle Book while also handling the video game adaptation of Aladdin for just about every system...except one. The Super Nintendo version that Capcom was developing was still honored by Disney, and while the Virgin version is considered the better version, the Capcom version is still pretty solid in its own right.

The game begins much like the movie does, with a merchant talking about a magic lamp before going into the story of Aladdin, how he came across the magic lamp and defeated Jafar. You get to see Jafar, Iago, Gazeem the humble thief and the entrance to the Cave of Wonders in the desert as before, then the game starts.

If you wait long enough and let the attract mode play, you'll get a Genie-based alternate title screen.

Stage 1

Area 1

The Control Pad lets you move left and right as well as duck, B lets you jump, Y lets you run when held down and A lets you throw apples. You only have a limited amount of apples, which is indicated in the upper-right corner.

Throw apples at enemies to stun them. Jump on them to get rid of them.

If you jump on the poles in the ground, you'll vault off them.

If you grab onto the poles, you can swing around. Swinging into enemies will get rid of them. Just hold forward on the Control Pad as soon as Aladdin has his stomach arched up while swinging forward, and you'll jump forwards. Holding Up while doing this gives you extra height.

By holding Up when you reach the edge of a platform, you can grab the edge. Press Up again to pull yourself up or press Down to drop down.

Jumping on green pots not only lets you look for power-ups and apples to throw, but also lets you jump up a little bit. Bread replenishes one hit, while chicken gives you full health.

The 1-Up lamp gives you an extra life.

Chests can be jumped on much like green pots. The red jewel with the heart in it increase your maximum health by one heart.

The soldiers that chase after you and the birds in the Watch out with the archers. Wait for them to shoot - their arrows can track your current location pretty well - then jump on their heads. You can also stun them with an apple if need be.

Green jewels can be collected much like the coins in Mario games; collecting 100 will net you an additional heart for your health in the upper-left corner, of which you can have up to ten. After that, getting 100 nets you an extra life. Red jewels are worth three and are very special - there are ten in each stage of the game, and 70 in all. If you can collect all 70 in one sitting, you can get the best ending.

On the rooftops, three are three red jewels in all, and you'll have to jump on the heads of men looking through windows and swing off poles in order to get to them. Once you go past the staircase of barrels, however, you can't go back. Make sure Aladdin touches the fourth and last red jewel after you jump right off the top stack of barrels and hover; otherwise, you won't touch it and you'll miss your one shot at grabbing the red jewel.

The thing that looks like a scroll is actually a parachute; once you have it, it will be in the upper-right corner with your gem and apple count, and you'll be able to hold R to glide and make longer jumps.

You can leap onto the snakes' heads and vault forward off them.

If you find the scarab in the chest, grab it before it flies away. If you can grab it, you can get a bonus stage at the end of the current section where you can get continues, extra health and even extra lives.

Area 2

Some guards throw barrels at you if you're close enough; stunning them before they throw barrel makes them drop the barrels.

The red jewels here are pretty straightforward.

Area 3

Hold B on the window awnings to get a higher bounce off of them.

If you die after grabbing a red jewel, a green jewel will spawn in its place, meaning that you don't have to re-collect the red jewel. Also, 1-Ups that you find out in the open will also re-spawn, so you can easily get the life you lost back.

You can hang off the swinging platforms, but it can be difficult to do. Thankfully, red jewels never re-spawn if you die.

Grabbing the towel on the rope lets you shimmy down. The first rope is okay, but you'll want to hover past the second towel for a red jewel.

Area 4

You'll meet your first boss: the angry merchant who laid a hand on Princess Jasmine early in the movie. Get in close. Wait for him to have his sword down when he swings at you then jump on his head. After this, he will furiously swing his sword. Wait for him to stop, then bait him in again. After a few successful head bops where you don't get stabbed in the butt or feet, you'll beat this guy and you'll meet Princess Jasmine, who is disguised as a commoner. Unfortunately, the palace guards catch up with Aladdin and Jasmine and throw Aladdin in the dungeon. A crazed old man - who is Jafar in disguise - helps Aladdin get out and leads him to the Cave of Wonders, and it is revealed that Aladdin is the only person who can enter the cave. This leads to the next level.

At the end of each stage, you'll get your password and you'll also see how many of the red jewels in the stage you have collected.
