LancerD1984 plays X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse - Part 1 of 6

I'm covering another X-Men game...and thankfully, LJN has nothing to do with it. Instead, it's developed by Capcom, and it's a decent effort...if you can survive.

The first section is in Training Mode. The only difference between Training Mode and Mission Mode is that Training Mode lets you perform a special move with the X button and contains the first section, while the Mission Mode makes the X button do nothing and contains the full game.

You have five playable characters: Cyclops, Wolverine, Beast, Psylocke and Gambit. For the beginning of the game, each character will have their own unique stage.

Your mission is to infiltrate the mutant slave island of Genosha, find out where the captured mutants are and free them all from the tyranny of Apocalypse and his massive army.

All playable character info and special moves courtesy of World of Nintendo.

Gambit Stage

NAME: GAMBIT
REAL NAME: Remy LeBeau
HEIGHT: 6' 1''
WEIGHT: 195 lbs.
MUTANT POWERS: Possesses the ability to convert an object's potential into exothermic kinetic energy.

ATTACKS:

STAFF ATTACK - Y
LOW STAFF KICK - Down+Y
JUMPING STAFF ATTACK - (In Air) Y
DOUBLE KICK - Up+Y
SINGLE CARD ATTACK - Forward, Forward, Y
TRIPLE CARD ATTACK - Down, Down-Forward, Forward, Y
HIGH CARD ATTACK - Up, Up, Y

After dropping a card awash in kinetic energy down onto the floor, Gambit gets rid of a few Genoshan guards and starts the mission.

Some of the special moves are really simple. Everyone has an Up+Y attack (which is alwys the last strike in a standing combo) and usually has a Down, Down-Forward, Forward+Y attack. Despite the Street Fighter II-ish nature of how to execute the special moves, they're very responsive and work when you need them to.

The Genoshan Magistrates (the guards in army uniform that punch kick at you) are easy, and the grenade throwers go down in a mere hit. The ones in green can jump kick and crouch kick at you, so watch out.

As you take the lift platforms across the bottomless pit, use your card throwing attack to get rid of them without taking damage from the resulting explosion.

The three X plates give you an extra life if you collect them all. The first one is just before the ramps and can easily be reached by jumping off the left edge of a platform under where the second grenadier is. The second one is to the left of the second ramp before the lift platforms. Just jump off the left edge to get it. The third and last for this stage is at the end of the lifts. To get it, jump on one of the descending platforms and quickly jump off the edge. If you time it right, you'll be able to reach it.

The red X canisters replenish your health. A small one replenishes a small amount, while a big one refills approximately half of the health meter.

The guns on the walls that move up and down and fire a laser every so often go down in one hit.

After the lift platforms, you'll be fighting enemies on an elevator. The masked guys with the guns can only attack with their guns, and they can pick you off from anywhere. If you're taking out multiple enemies at one time, make sure they're among them. If not, throw cards at them and duck when they point their guns at you. There is also a barrel here, and the explosive ordinance that jumps out and hits the center of the elevator can damage enemies. There is also some health in this barrel if you need it.

The big muscular guys as well as the men with the swords have some range. If you jump in against the muscular guy, you'll be knocked out of the air with an uppercut. This guy can also knock you to the ground in one hit. The sword guy can attack with range, speed and efficiency, so use some distance attacks against him whenever possible.

You'll then jump on a motorboat that's only big enough for you to stand on. You'll then take on the boss: a huge double-bladed copter. This is pretty easy. Just get underneath the laser turrets and use the upwards card throw (Up, Up+Y) to take out the laser turrets. You'll have more than enough time to move out of the way of any lasers that they shoot at you. From there, you'll jump on the copter. There are Genoshan Magistrates on this plane, but there is also a guy at the controls. Quickly take out the guy at the controls (whose sole attack is a pistol shot at whatever's behind him) and this mission is over.
