HCBailly plays The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - Part 5 of 26

In this entry, we wrap up the Eastern Palace and continue on with the game.

Eastern Palace maps by Iron Knuckle.

For the first two rooms on the second floor, you'll have to find the right switch amongst all the fake ones. For the first one, it's the one under the feet of the armored guy in the center. For the second one that has all those balls shooting out of the walls, it's the upper-left switch.

The red armored guy takes two hits with the Bow and Arrow to kill.

The boss here - or [b]bosses[b] - are six large Armos Knights. They move around in a circle before converging in the center to smother you, then line up at the north wall and move forward in an attempt to charge into you. The Bow and Arrow will kill each one in three hits, and judging by how much space you can find between them, shoot towards the north wall at them and easily knock them back with it, you can kill five of these guys in a matter of seconds.

The one that's left will turn red and try to jump towards you, trying to squish you on the way down. You can time it right by standing in one spot, hitting them just before they jump with an arrow and keep them on the floor for all three hits.

If you use up all of your arrows, you can use the whirlwind slash (Hero's Technique, Master Technique, whatever) on these guys and push more than one of them back if the situation's right while dealing more damage than your regular sword slash.

Whenever you beat a boss, you'll get a full Heart Container which will increase your max life by one heart. After you collect it, you'll get the Pendant of Courage. Head back to Sahasrahla's hiding place.

Also, whenever you beat a boss, your life and magic power are both completely restored.

Stuff

Bring the Pendant back to Sahasrahla. He'll tell you about the Knights of Hylia who protected the Hylia royal family three or four generations ago, who also protected the Pendant of Courage. Unfortunately, they were wiped out in the war over the Golden Land and it is said that from the descendants of the Knights of Hylia, a Hero shall appear. Sahasrahla believes Link is that hero. He asks you to get the remaining Pendants and hands you the sacred treasure that has been passed down by the descendants of the Wise Men: the Pegasus Boots. By holding down A, you can run and perform a devastating dash attack with your sword.

He'll also tell you about a helpful item in a hidden cave on the east side of Lake Hylia before you leave.

Technically, once you give the witch the Mushroom, you can just go to an adjacent screen and instantly return back to the house to get the Magic Powder inside the shop. The Magic Powder can do many things, such as light lanterns, change the green waddling guys that shock you into a brown variation that can talk to you and say strange things if you're close enough, and kill the Anti-Faeries in the Eastern Palace as well as many other caves and dungeons you'll come across throughout the game. If you use it on the Anti-Faeries, it changes them into regular Faeries, making it easier to refill your health in case you're in a tight spot.

You may have noticed that just southwest of the wooden bridge near the Witch's House is a bush surrounded by grass that can be cut with the sword. If you cut the bush, you'll find a hole in the ground. Jump in to find a larger Faerie that will refill all your health when you approach her.

By the way, you can cut grass and bushes to find power-ups and Rupees if you need to. Watch out for bees! Thankfully, you can use the Bug Catching Net to catch a bee, put it in a Magic Bottle and sic it on enemies when you want! If you want to use it again, catch it in the Bug Catching Net and put it back in the Magic Bottle.

Other times, you may find other hazards, such as bombs that are waiting to blow up in your face and enemy soldiers. They show up in the grass and bushes randomly, so watch it.

There is a cliff to the left of the Sanctuary. Head to it and use the Pegasus Boots to dash into the large set of rocks. You'll find an underground passage that leads to another Heart Piece.

Head back to the library south of Kakariko Village. Use the Pegasus Boots to run right into the bookshelf with the green book on top of it. You'll run smack into the bookshelf and knock the book over, allowing you to finally collect it. This is the Book of Mudora, and it allows you to translate the ancient text of the Hylia.

Just east of the library area is a forest where a kid is playing the ocarina. When you approach him, however, the animals run away and he disappears.

One screen to the west of Link's House is a set of rocks similar to the ones you dashed into near the Sanctuary. Dash into them to find a cave with four Faeries inside.

There is another cave one screen south of Link's House. The area here is known as the Great Swamp. Bomb the crack in the wall, and you'll find another site to refill all your health if necessary.

Be careful as you move around that area, as there are blue creatures and Hyrule Castle soldiers hiding out in the grass waiting to jump out and hit you. If you hit the blue guys, they'll say "All right! Take it, thief!" before giving you a Heart to refill your life with.

Just southwest of that cave is some sort of temple. You can move the blocks around to open the chest and get some more Bombs, but you'll have to leave and re-enter to move the blocks around so you can get to the door. Do that, and you'll choose between two switches. Don't pull the left switch, it'll cause bombs to drop from the ceiling. Instead, pull the one on the right to release the floodgates, then leave. The water surrounding this building will be gone, and you'll find another Heart Piece - the sixth in the game.

Here's another thing I didn't know about until now: the two fish that flop around when the water here is drained actually do something. Grab a fish, take it to the water one screen north and throw it in. You'll get 10 Rupees while getting a message along the lines of "keep this between us." Even the fish talk in this game. Fun.

To the west is the desert entrance. If you grab the sign, the guy standing next to it will follow you around until you leave the area. This will also probably be the first time you'll see spider-like enemies hiding in the rocks (they also hide in bushes, too). The cave on this screen has another Faerie that completely heals you. The birds will fly around if you get close enough to them, and they'll try to hit you before flying off.

One screen west is the desert itself. Whack the vultures if they get near you with the whirlwind slash. Watch out for the blue dots speckling the desert, because those are landmines that will explode if you step on them. Also, please don't touch the cacti. They hurt.

There is a cave in the north desert wall that you can easily get to. Just keep going, and bomb the crack in the south wall where the old man is. You'll find another Heart Piece - number seven.

There's a bunch of dirt in the ground that makes up the picture of an octopus. Weird.

If you haven't gotten the Book of Mudora yet, the old man in this cave will tell you about it here.
