In this episode, we explore more of Kakariko Village and learn some great stuff we'll need to keep in mind later on!
The house with the grass roof used to be a hideout for thieves. The leader of the gang of thieves was Blind and he hated bright light a lot. This will come into play much later into the game.
Go downstairs to find four red rupees as well as a crack in the wall. If you bomb the crack in the wall, you'll find another Heart Piece as well as more money under the pots!
The guy with the turban who is sitting on the floor will give you a Magic Bottle for 100 Rupees. Take it, because you'll definitely be needing it later on.
If you talk to some of the townspeople, they'll alert the soldiers to your prescence and hide behind the locked doors of their homes. Thankfully, the soldiers they summon are pretty easy to kill.
One of the houses gives you Rupees if you pull on the painting. Really? I honestly didn't know that until now.
One house will be behind a bunch of bushes. If you talk to him, you'll find out about an area where the Zoras live, and that their treasure can supposedly turn people into fish. Another hint for the game!
The house to the left of this one will have a sick man. Walk up to him and you'll get the Bug Catching Net after he speaks to you.
The house of the south of this one has a back entrance. Walk up to the back of the house and you'll be behind the counter. Open the chest here to get another Magic Bottle. There are four of these in the game, but you won't get the other ones until much later.
Don't worry about the running man, you'll be able to catch him later in the game.
Believe it or not, you can bomb the wall of the shed in the lower-left corner of the town to find a secret room with some items. I never knew about this either, to tell you the truth.
The house near the old woman with the broom has a crack in one of the walls. You'll be able to find 10 arrows in the chest behind this crack. (The chest will contain a red rupee in the Game Boy Advance version, as the GBA version won't let you collect arrows until after you've gotten the bow.)
Talk to the kid that watches you as you move and he'll tell you where the elder is before marking the location on your map. This is the next place you'll need to go.
Repeatedly smacking a chicken will cause a whole chicken ambush. (This was also made possible in Link's Awakening.)
The small building near the kid is a store. You'll need one of the Magic Bottles to get the red potion, which refills your life completely whenever you drink it.
The other side of the cafe will tell you about other things in the game. You'll learn about the kid who used to play the ocarina in the forest until a terrible fate met with him when he hunted for the Golden Land. (Cross-referential pun intended.) You'll also learn about a lady in the Well of Wishing in the hills where the river begins. (This will definitely help you out later.)
To the south of the village is a library. There's a book on top of one of the shelves, but you won't be able to reach it, much less get it. Don't worry, you'll eventually find a way!
There are two houses to the south. The one to the right is a chest mini-game where you pay some rupees, pick a chest, and get what's inside. The one to the left is better. It's got two quarreling brothers who have sealed the doorway between each other's rooms...until you place a Bomb at the crack in the wall. When you leave through the entrance on the other side, talk to the guy and you'll find out that you can get a surprise for reaching the end of the maze behind him in fifteen seconds or less.
Make your way up to the sign and slash the bushes as you go. When you reach the sign, go down and you'll jump over the fence. Walk straight up to the guy and you'll beat the maze in eight or nine seconds (eight if you're quick). Your reward? Another Piece of Heart! With this fourth one, you'll now have five hearts for your maximum life!
To the east of the village is a blacksmith. His partner has gone missing, and unless he comes back, he can't do anything for you.
To The Elder!
There's not much left you can do here, so head north out of the village and make your way east to the mountains.
Watch out with the bow and arrow soldiers, as they have some range.
As you go east, you'll be at the Witch's House. Give her the mushroom and she'll be able to finish her brew and have something for you when you come back later. Also, the house next to her has the Red, Blue and Green Potions. We've already seen the Red Potion, but you'l find the Blue and Green Potions here. The Green Potion refills your Magic Power, while the Blue Potion is a combination of both the Red and Green Potions. (In the GBA version, the woman in the house is Maple from the Game Boy Color Zelda games.) I later found out that the Witch's name is Syrup, and Maple is supposed to be her granddaughter.
Whatever you do, don't hit the green guy that's waddling around with your sword. You will get shocked and take damage.
