The sound test code is the spell "Nahumistmi." It's mentioned in the demo, believe it or not, so I might as well get that out of the way.
Anyway, you play as an apprentice wizard named Paul. You're basically the only wizard left, as the evil Abadon has systematically found and captured all the others. It's up to you to mature as a wizard in time to defeat the evil Abadon and save everyone else.

Go into the guild house and buy a cup of goat's milk. This will allow you to talk to the keeper, who will tell you about a house without doors or windows somewhere in the wilderness.
You have food and water supplies that quickly dwindle, so keep an eye on that constantly. You have a health meter that you can check out at any time by going to the status screen.
You can save the game, but you can only save into a slot 15 times. Once you use those 15 saves, that's it. You'll have to use another slot. You have four save slots.
If you overdo it on the goat's milk, you instantly die as you neglect your task and Abadon destroys Merlwood the next day.
