FreezingInfernos plays Indiana Jones Greatest Adventures - Part 1 of 15

Grab your hat and grab your whip, kids!

We're gonna look at a
good Indiana Jones game!

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Cave of the Golden Idol

Let's go.

As you can see at the beginning, you can throw grenades (they work like the Thermal Detonators in the Super Star Wars trilogy) and you have a health bar that goes from green to red as you get hit. That's nice.

The game has a bit of a Castlevania vibe, as there are pots that work like the candles in the Castlevania games (or the things that sit there in mid-air in the NES Ninja Gaiden games). If you punch them, you can get power-ups out of them. The first one you see gives you the whip. Thankfully, you can still punch people out using a seperate button, which will come into usefulness later.

The controls are similar to the Super Star Wars games, save for a few differences. The roll (read: slide) actually hits enemies now...that will also come into play later.

Anyway, enemies and obstacles here include stalactites, bats, Hovitos, pirahnas, spiders, bamboo spikes that pop out of the ground and spike traps. The enemies and obstacles here are pretty easy. You'll have to duck down to hit the spiders, though.

You'll see hooks on the wall that you can hit with your whip in order to swing around. This not only gets you where you need to go, it also damages enemies if you keep hanging on. The first hook you see in the game has a 1-Up; pick it up, you'll need it.

There is a black wall in the background at one point. When you reach it, roll. You'll move quickly under three spike traps that pop out of the darkness.

When you reach the end, move all the way to the right to trigger the fanfare and clear the stage. Not much to this one.

That Boulder Scene

Now that you've replaced the Golden Idol with a bag of sand, you've caused a gigantic boulder to roll towards you. Just another day at the office for ol' Indy.

You don't have a lot of room to maneuver, so keep moving right and jump over the bamboo poles and spike traps.

I forgot to mention the gold nuggets that you collect throughout the game. These things not only give you 50 points for each one you collect, but getting 100 nets you an extra life. You probably figured that out already, though.

The cutscenes mention some key points and leave out others, such as René Belloq stealing the Golden Idol from Indiana Jones. I guess they couldn't fit everything into the game...

Anyway, Indy's colleagues believe that the Lost Ark is in the lost city of Tunis, near Cairo...and they know now that the Nazis are looking for it with the help of René Belloq, who stole the Golden Idol from Indy in the movie. Marion Ravenwood is also involved, and they believe that she is with the Nazis. Indiana Jones, knowing somehow she isn't, heads off to Nepal to get more information.
