PrinceWatercress plays X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse - Part 5 of 8

It's now time to go through Avalon...and we're tackling all five

Avalon

Password: Psylocke, Gambit, Cyclops, Wolverine, Beast, Gambit, Xavier, Cyclops

Xavier has managed to pinpoint Magento's location - his orbiting space station Avalon. Magneto is waiting for them, and so is his right-hand man Exodus.

Just like the beginning of the game, each character has their own path through Avalon. Thankfully, you only need to beat the game with one character. Thankfully, I cover all five paths.

Beast Path

Throughout the level, you'll also see Exodus's Acolytes teleporting in and out every so often. They'll show up, throw a ball of energy at you that has homing capabilities, disappear, show up again, rinse and repeat. When you kill them, they'll disappear but they won't come back. You'll be seeing them a lot throughout Avalon, and they take slightly more damage than a Genoshan Magistrate.

The dark blue robots move back and forth and shoot lasers at you.

The enemies here are really easy to destroy, but watch out with some of the floors and ceilings, as electric shocks can travel across them, making getting around difficult.

You'll meet Exodus here, During this and Gambit's stages, you won't have the Acolytes to worry about. With everyone else, however, you will. Just jump into the air and punch him. You should be able to punch Exodus twice whenever you do so.

When you bring his energy bar down to half, you'll get rid of him and any onscreen henchmen. He'll disappear and you'll have to play another character's path to face him again. At that point, he'll have only half health left, and you can fight him again to get rid of him once and for all. Once you do, he won't show up in the other paths, making it easier to get through the game with multiple characters should the need arise.

After Exodus, there will be an area when you'll have to jump onto the undersides of platforms to move forward. In this section, you will find a little square with a picture of one of the X-Men. It rotates between the five playable characters and gives whoever is shown an extra life when you pick it up. This is really good, as you can either give your favorite characters or characters you're best with extra lives. It also allows you to take a character who has lost all of his lives and revive him. That's nice.

The boss here is a laser that shoots lasers of electricity from the ceiling. There will be electric shocks travelling the floors and ceilings of the room as you do this. Do as much damage to it while you can still stand on the ceiling, and avoid both the shocks and the lasers itself. If you're standing on the undersides of the platforms, you won't get hit by the lasers.

If you beat any character's stage, you will get to face Magneto with that character. Unlike other bosses, you get to fight him in a team effort (sort of), and any damage that Magneto takes is not healed whenever you die; his health meter will stay as it is when you lose a life. You can either hang back and hit when you need to, or get on the platforms and hit a combo if you're able to. If you lose a life while fighting Magneto, you will be able to face Magneto again when you play as that character again.

Gambit Path

The platforms at the beginnings have laser cannons at the bottom, but you can easily destroy these cannons.

Not long after you start will you fight Exodus. He'll fly around, teleport in and out and shoot his eye lasers at you. If he dives for the floor, get away! If he grabs a hold of you, he will take you up into the air and throw you to the ground for some cheap damage. He can also teleport into the screen at a higher position than normal and fly straight at you with a powerful kick attack.

You'll have to jump up and hit him, and all the while, you'll have to be careful as to not only avoid his attacks, but also with the Acolytes that show up. Sometimes they show up, sometimes they don't. It depends on who you're using and when. For this first battle, you won't have to deal with them.

After Exodus, you'll be jumping from one platform to another to make it to the end. The light purple platforms can only be landed on with the ceiling walk. If you make it to the top and stay there, you'll have no trouble finding the free life.

As you continue on, you'll not only find some energy but also a revolving 1-up square.

As you go, you'll see laser turrets on the ceiling. Use the upward card throw to get rid of them.

The boss is a hologram generator that creates holographic versions of the other playable X-Men. You'll have to kill all four holograms to move on. Interestingly, they fight just like all the other playable characters Psylocke is the worst, as she will jump kick you as soon as she gets the chance and is pretty fast. Cyclops is easy as long as you don't let him use the Optic Blast. Beast is the easiest to beat since he's so slow and can be hit with the triple card throw easily. Wolverine may have speed on his side, but if you can get as much distance between him and you as possible, he'll still go down easily via the triple card throw. He's also easy to get a full standing combo on, surprisingly.
