HCBailly plays Final Fantasy II - Part 36 of 44

In this episode, we learn that whirlwinds have walls, floors and ceilings in them. What.

All maps by Paco, except for the overworld maps by Rick Bruns.

Castle Phin

In order to enter the Whirlwind, you'll have to get a Hiryuu. The game doesn't tell you where to go to do this and you have to figure this part out yourself, so let me save you the trouble: head to the room in the castle with the shiny Mirror and use the Pendant on it. The light from the Pendant will be absorbed into the Mirror. Congratulations, you have a Hiryuu.

Believe it or not, you can equip the Hiryuu on Richard as an item. It can cast a decent level of Fire on all the enemies in the battle.

Phin

Head back into town, and you'll find out that the Whirlwind has attacked Phin, and all of the townspeople (save for one person) are dead...but Paul is still alive. Ask him about the Whirlwind, and he'll tell you to search the bed. Do that and you'll find a fake wall that leads to eight treasure chests. The stuff in these chests is actually pretty useful.

Leave town and enter the Whirlwind. The Hiryuu will go in, and you'll be inside.

Whirlwind

If you didn't get the Ripper Knife earlier in the game, you can get it here.

The Golems are pretty tough unless you increase your party members' offense, and the Corpses (known as Bodyguards in later versions) are actually not undead enemies. If you've powered up Bsrk enough, you can kill a Golem in one hit with it, which makes it easier than killing it with Fire (pun not intended).

The water does damage you while you walk in it.

If you've actually been leveling up on Axes for quite a while, the Poison Axe is probably one of the best weapons in the game for you. Besides being quite powerful, it can actually Poison enemies and works very well on Lightning-based enemies.

The Vampire Ladies (VmpLady) is just a slightly more powerful version of the VmpGirls. Hit them with Life like you did before. Just remember that unlike the VmpGirls, the VmpLadys can put you to sleep. Once again, they're not really that much of a threat since they're so similar and slightly more powerful.

Powering your party up with Bsrk against the Lamia is a bit of a must, since they attack somewhat like the VmpGirls as they can Charm and Confuse you. Also, we finally get to show off the Captains here, and at this point in the game, you can easily kill them off.

The Defense Sword increases your evade a good deal, which is really nice if you have somebody mastering Swords.

A General is in that last chest HCBailly opens. He can be pretty tough, but if you've powered up Toad and/or Mini, you have a good chance of taking him out in one hit.
