PrinceWatercress plays Beneath A Steel Sky - Part 8 of 20

In this entry, we give Lamb a holiday, and we meet Anita again only to learn we need a hole in our head and a port inserted into it to ensure we can directly interface with LINC-Space and get somewhere around here.

While you didn't necessarily have to talk to Lamb, you can do it to find out one thing: that he needs a holiday and a break from his managerial duties at work. I didn't mention this last time, but you can get this bit of information from him and realize that you have to get a ticket for a tour for him. By giving Lamb the ticket, Lamb will return the favor by giving you a tour of the factory. All you have to go back up to the upper tour, talk to Lamb when you're inside the factory, and he will give you the tour. If you have to wait for him to enter the factory, so be it.

For getting a tour of the factory - which isn't all that exciting - you'll be treated as an honored guest of the factory, which allows you to go past the man with the clipboard (whose name is Potts) to go to the radioactive core. Here, you'll meet a guy walking around in a white radioactive suit as well as Anita, who we haven't seen since shortly after the beginning of the game.

By talking to Anita and going through the dialogue options, you'll find out that she does not have a protective suit due to being a D-LINC. By asking Anita what a D-LINC is, you'll find out that a D-LINC is the lowest class of citizen who is more or less bereft of rights and unable to move about the city, and that she is a D-LINC after being caught hacking into LINC - more specifically, areas in LINC-Space used by Security - to see what Security was up to. She also finds out who you really are tells you that you will need a LINC status of eight or higher to go to ground level, and if you were to check on LINC, you only have a status of five.

As for LINC-Space, LINC-Space is the world inside LINC's memory and an abstract projection of LINC's circuits and databases. The only way to access it is through a special interface, and to link to it, you'll need a Schriebmann port. To get one, you'll have to undergo surgery to have one placed in your head, and the only place to do that is at Burke's Bio Surgery on the middle floor. Once you're inside LINC-Space, there will still be some security in place - some deterrents, some lethal - so you'll have to be careful.

By telling Anita you need to get to ground level, Anita will give you her Jammer, which is highly illegal bypass software. It will allow you to get past the retina scan to Security's files. Once you mention the Jammer, you can give her Reich's ID card so she can download the Jammer to it.

If you ask about the Council, she will tell you that one of the members had the idea of bonding their brain to LINC, and from there, things in the city have gotten weird.

If you talk to the man in the rad suit, you will not even be able to understand him regardless of the dialogue options that you choose. If you talk to Anita after talking to him, you'll find out she can't understand him, either.

You can enter the radioactive core area, but you won't be able to do much of anything here...yet.

Head back to the middle floor and head all the way west to Burke's Bio Surgery. You can right-click on the projector and ask for a Schriebmann port, but unless you have cash - which is not an option here - you won't be seeing the doctor any time soon. Talk to Joey and ask him to talk to the secretary, and when Joey asks what you want him to do, tell him to use his natural charm. Joey will go up to the secretary and tells her to open the door and that he takes his orders from Overmann. This allows you to see the doctor.
