angryponcho plays Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon - Part 18 of 41

The game decides to freaking disappoint me right when it gets interesting. Everything gets explained at the end of the entry. The story of my life.

Spike's Arena

When you head to Evening Lake, you'll fight another boss: Spike. For this battle, Sgt. Byrd will be dropping ammo for you to use against Spike. Spike, however, can use it against you if he gets his hands on it. For the first wave, you'll have to charge the lava boulders into Spike and try not to get either smacked or shot. (Charging around the arena makes it easier for him to miss you.) After a few hits, he'll stomp the ground and cause the ground to break apart. This will cause lava jets to rise out of the ground in certain parts of the arena as a result.

Grab the red crystals and breathe fire at him. This will result in a one-time-only Superflame-like attack that will hit him. If he grabs one, he'll shoot a massive fire wave at you that you can easily glide across. When he's nearly dead, the red crystals are blue. Grab them, and they'll act like missiles when you use your flame attack. If he grabs a blue crystal, he'll perform an attack that acts like an energy beam that reaches all the way to the end of the arena and can slowly track you. If you keep charging around the arena, it won't be able to hit you. After those last three hits with the blue crystals, he's gone.

Evening Lake

Almost as if on cue, Bianca teleports to you when you arrive. She tells you that the Sorceress has set up a trap for you, and wants you to leave before she can actually spring it on you. This time, she's speaking in more of a "no, seriously, don't do this" tone than the authoritative commanding tone she used in the last two homeworlds. Something's up, because it sounds like she's an unwitting pawn in someone else's scheme.

Anyway, time to head back and get some more stuff done.

Midday Gardens

Head back to the Sparx Sign in the Midday Gardens homeworld. It's time for another bonus level with Sparx the Dragonfly!

Spider Town

All of the enemies here seem to be spiders. Also, the bigger ones shoot fiery ordinance all around them while standing in one place. They're easy to kill from a distance. Just don't get too close.

The keys turn off the laser beams. Yeah, explain that one.

The grey butterfly is a Super Shield. This lets you touch all enemies (and destroy them) without taking damage. You'll still have to turn any energy shields off with the corresponding floor switch, though.

The boss here is a giant spider that moves around randomly and spins around as he does so. The spinning attack makes it impervious to your attacks, so you'll have to wait for it to stop and then shoot it. If you hit it in the face right between the eyes, the baby spiders that it sends at you (in packs of eight!) will be destroyed at the same time, making power-ups unnecessary.

When you beat this level, you'll gain a new ability: hold down all four shoulder buttons to get Sparx to point towards a gem.

Wait.

You mean to tell me I have to beat half the fucking game just to fucking unlock this ability.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

No, seriously, if I wasn't at the library right now, I'd be destroying something in pure anger after finding this out, because I've actually never played the game before. I've played the second game, but not the first or third ones. Hey, at least my notes will help me with those games when I finally play them...but goddammit, why are you forcing me to go through half of the fucking game to unlock something that I was able to do at the very start of the second game? What were they thinking?!?

I hate the fact that I'm ending on this note, but goddammit. You were able to do it at the very beginning of the second game, but you can't do it in the third game until you beat the first two bosses...out of four. Gee, thanks. Makes my total domination of this game that much harder compared to the last one harder when I finally get to it. Don't get me wrong, I really love the game. But this just killed me.
