PrinceWatercress plays Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - Part 3 of 11

We check out World 3 this time around...and this world is pretty big. It's so big, we need two videos!

World 3

World 3-1

If you go down at the start, you can get a power-up. Also, if you keep going right and try to jump up and over the pipe, you can find a hidden power-up and skip part of the level.

Some of the pipes shoot out air currents that you cannot swim against unless you are wearing the Frog Suit. Also, if you have the Frog Suit, swimming is easier, and you can stay in place in the water instead of sinking if you let go of the Control Pad and stop pressing A. Instead of having to repeatedly press A to stay afloat and use Left or Right to go where you want, you can just hold a direction on the Control Pad. If you hold A while moving, you can move even fa You can also swim against currents and get a 1-Up just below the pipe leading to the exit. Obviously, the Frog Suit is a bad idea to have on land, as all Mario will do is hop when you move.

New enemies here include Bloopers (the squid enemies that swim towards you), the underwater Volcano Lotus that spits fireballs upwards and Nanny Bloopers with mini-Bloopers following from behind when they're not acting as a means of attack.

World 3-2

Here's a new obstacle: donut blocks. If you stand on, they shake, and if you stand on them for too long, they will fall down.

This stage is easy; the only hard thing about it is making sure you don't fall into the water and fall victim to the Cheep Cheeps that are jumping about.

If you can fly up near the exit, you can find some coins and a hidden 1-Up.

World 3-3

For this one, you'll meet a new enemy: Big Bertha. Big Bertha is a big fish that quickly swims back and forth through the water, and if you get too close, she will eat you no matter what kind of Mario you're playing as and you'll lose a life. To make matters worth, the land slowly ascends and descends, and you'll have to keep yourself above water to avoid being eaten. You can defeat her, but she just comes right back.

Also, the platforms made of red circles with a green one in the center spin around wildly, then stop for a brief time. You can use them as platforms during that time, but be ready to make your move or else you'll be flung somewhere.

World 3 Fortress 1

This one is easy to clear if you know what to do. Avoid the enemies as you make your way to the sixth door. Enter that door, then go left and you'll be able to face Boom Boom.

If Boom Boom's hands turn white when you jump on his head, his arms have become wings. Be ready to jump on his head before he gets in the air, or else you'll have to wait for him to swoop down before jumping on his head again.

The warp pipes on the map act as shortcuts through the world map. (These areas have timers on the NES version; in the All-Stars version on Super NES, they don't.)

World 3-5

It's time for more swimming. The Big Berthas here aren't as lethal as the one in World 3-3, but you'll still need to watch out for them regardless. Also, you'll be noticing small, flashing jellyfish throughout the level. Touching them hurts, so don't do it.

If you can get in the second downward pipe in the level with the Frgog Suit and hold Right, you can get three extra lives.

World 3-4

You'll have to slide down the slope and get a running to get past the lake shortly after the beginning.

Lakitu makes his first appearance here, and just like in the first Super Mario Bros. game, he will move back and forth and throw down Spinys that will slowly advance towards Mario. (Unlike the first game, however, the Spinys move a little bit to the side on the way down.) Like always, you can't jump on Spinys; you'll need Fireballs or Koopa Shells or the line to beat the Spinys. If you can jump on Lakitu's head in some way, you can take Lakitu down.

If overworld bridges are flat, you can cross them; otherwise, you can't.

World 3-6

The donut blocks are back, and they are back in force. To make matters worse, this is an auto-scrolling stage.

If you can get a Hammer, you can get on a rowboat and cross the ocean. You can find some Toad Houses that you can go to, but you will have to use the pipes to access the castle.
