PrinceWatercress plays Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - Part 5 of 11

We wrap up our business in Giant Land before heading to World 5.

World 4

World 4-3

The giant Hammer Brother is known as a Sledge Brother. If he jumps into the air, he will cause an earthquake that will stun Mario briefly. If you're in the air when that happens, it won't affect you.

This level is just a brief underground area. Watch out for the upside-down Buzzy Beetles as well as the upside-down Spinys, which act the same as the upside-down Buzzy Beetles. Also, be careful near the wooden blocks at the end, as the bottom one will push you back if you run into it. Get used to seeing that in later levels.

World 4 Fortress 1

You'll meet Thwomps that go sideways as well as candle flames that walk towards you if you face away from them.

If you go down the third pipe shortly after the start, you can skip all the way to Boom Boom. Just watch the walls to see where to jump near the end of the underground passage.

World 4-4

It's a big underwater world!

If you can somehow go down and enter the pipe all the way to the left at the start, you can get a bunch of coins with the two P-Switches in the hidden room you will enter.

Also, the only enemy here is a Lakitu throwing Spinys into the water.

World 4-5

Some of the Bullet Bills flash red. These are Boomerang Bills, and they go in the other direction shortly after being fired out of the cannon.

There is a block above one of the Bullet Bill cannons, and if you can hit it from underneath, you can find a vine. Climb up the vine, then go in the pipe and you'll find a Tanooki Suit. If you hold Down and press B, you'll be able to turn into a statue and become invincible for a short time. The only drawback is that you can't move, and you'll eventually come out of statue form on your own if you don't press any buttons for a couple of seconds.

World 4-6

This stage has an interesting gimmick. Enemies start out one size, but if you enter a door, they'll be the opposite size on the other end.

One of the sides has a brick containing a 1-Up Mushroom; the other does not.

World 4 Fortress 2

You could go straight to Boom Boom...or you could enter the hidden door to the left of the P-Switch you'll find and hit. If you do that, you'll be in a pipe maze. Jump on the platforms to get them going, then jump on them to switch between left, up, and right, in that order. Inside the maze, you can wrap around the screen, so if you go all the way to one side, you can go through the side of the screen and come out on the other end! Remember this for later levels.

At the top of the maze, you can get several coins and extra lives, making this set of hidden areas worth it.

World 4 Castle

The King is a dinosaur this time around.

World 4 Airship

If you take the top path at the beginning and keep on jumping, you'll make this airship easier on yourself.

Some of the cannons are flamethrowers. Don't stand near them so you don't get burned.

The Koopaling for this world's airship is Iggy. He doesn't really have any special attacks, making the uneven floor the only real hazard here.

The king looks like he fits more with World 2 after you give him his magic wand back. Also, if you are Tanooki or Frog Mario when you meet the king of any world after getting the wand back, you'll get a different message than you normally would.

In the next letter, the Princess will give you a hint about the Warp Whistle in World 2 (this is most likely how you're supposed to find out about this) and gives you another P-Wing.
