HalfBlindGamer plays Link: The Faces of Evil - Part 1 of 15

"Gee, it sure is boring around here..."

After the all-too-easy to remember opening cutscene where Gwonam tells you about Ganon's seizure of the island of Koridai (yes, the wizard has a name), he takes Link to the island of Koridai.

Crater Cove

There are three places you can go at the beginning of the game, but Seb checks out Crater Cove first. It's the volcanic area in the lower-right corner of the map.

The gameplay is exactly like Zelda: Wand of Gamelon. The only difference is that you're playing as Link. That's basically it. Attack enemies, grab stuff with your sword, leap when you have to and try not to die.

The Dairas will throw axes at you. You can deflect the axes with your sword.

The fireballs that come out of the volcano at the beginning will hurt you, but you can block them with your sword if you're positioned correctly.

The Gohmas are tough nuts to crack. Since we just started the game, we won't be able to kill them in one shot with bombs, so you'll have to slash like mad when two of them surround you. Kill the one that's in your way, then quickly move away from the other one. It becomes readily apparent that just like Zelda in Wand of Gamelon, Link isn't very fast either.

You'll get Rupies from destroying enemies. The red ones are worth one, the green ones are worth five, and the blue ones (which you won't see very often) are worth ten, totally bowling over what they're actually worth in Zelda canon, which the CD-i games are not considered to be.

The house in the upper-left corner of this area is home to Anutu the Fisherman. He'll also have a live Gohma in his house, but it won't hurt you. He'll tell you that he's caught the largest crab he's ever seen. Link remarks that the crab is indeed a Gohma, and Anatu gives him the Sword of Power for his wisdom.

The Sword of Power is better than the sword you start with in the game. If you have full health, you'll be able to shoot projectiles out of it when you attack.

Before you leave, go under the house and grab the key. Be careful not to fall in the water, even though platform can be pretty spotty at times. Strike the map with the Triforce with your sword to head back to the World Map.

Controls

The tutorial is pretty hilarious and has been used in way too many YouTube Poops to mention. Link tells you he brought his smart sword, and it won't hurt anyone friendly. Way to terribly explain why you stab people you're trying to talk to, game.

Control Pad: Up to jump and climb ladders. Diagonal up to jump forward. Down to crouch. Diagonal down to duck walk. Left and/or right to walk. Also moves the cursor on the world map.
Button 1: Slash sword, take objects and talk to people. Also selects destination on the world map.
Button 2: Action. Uses tools. Also used to open doors. Open doors. Hold Down and press 2 to check your inventory.
