Cornshaq plays 8 Eyes - Part 1 of 4

It's now time to play a rather interesting Castlevania clone...8 Eyes!

All maps by Loquo.

Mankind is recovering from hundreds of years of chaos and nuclear war, and civilization is being rebuilt by the Great King, who harnesses the power of eight jewels. The jewels, known as the 8 Eyes, were formed at the centers of eight nuclear explosions that came close to destroying the Earth. The 8 Eyes have mysterious power which, in the wrong hands, could bring about the end of the world. The Great King's eight power-hungry dukes steal the jewels for themselves and banish the King to the nuclear wastelands, threatening to once again plunge the Earth into war.

You are Orin the Falconer. With your falcon Cutrus, you must fight the Dukes, retrieve the 8 Eyes and bring them back to the altar of peace so that the Great King can return and finish rebuilding the earth.

When you start the game, you'll be able to pick one of seven levels and start the game. You won't be able to enter the House of Ruth until you beat the first seven levels.

Spain

Strike the switch with your sword to open the door and enter the level. You'll be doing this at the start of every level.

When you enter the castle, you'll deal with two swordsmen. Your sword is pretty weak, and these guys have more range, but it is possible to beat these guys in a few hits. You'll want to move in, strike then move back to avoid getting hit. You'll want to do this with any enemies that attack with close-range melee weapons such as swords and kick attacks.

You can use Cutrus to enter the wall and find hidden items sometimes. Near the start is a scroll. If you can get it, it will say "Between Green and Purple are two jewels."

You'll want to be careful, as Cutrus and Orin have separate health bar. If one of them dies, the game ends regardless of who you lose, so you want to be careful.

The crosses will give you energy for the Item gauge. This lets you use items, which can be used by holding Up and pressing A. Yes, this is a Castlevania clone and there are items to use with item energy, but if you're used to Castlevania's controls, you'd know that's it's pretty hard to accidentally trigger Up+A when you don't need to. It's thoughtful, but it does throw you off.

In order to find secret items in walls and ceilings, you'll have to send out Cutrus and have him fly into the wall in order to find a blue icon that contains a power-up. You'll have to get him to touch it again to reveal it, then do it one more time in order to grab it.

The Blue Sphere will increase the max energy for Orin, Cutrus and the item energy bar. These health and item energy extensions only apply for the current level, so once you beat a stage, you'll have to earn them all over again.

When the archers stop moving, they'll fire an arrow. You can attack the arrow and move a little bit closer to him, destroying arrows as you approach him, before you can finally bring them down.

The floating skulls will move around in circles. Anticipate their movements before striking.

The white orb is a weapon that requires a little bit of item energy to use. When you throw it, it goes forward at an arc. It starts out high, so you'll need some distance and you'll need a bit of an understanding of how the orb bounces around before you make a habit out of using it whenever you need to. Whenever you beat a stage, you'll have to collect the special weapons all over again.

The Duke at the end has his own energy bar, which is on the upper right. Every boss, or Duke, will have one. At least you can hit the Duke in the head with the white orb from up close. Hit him once with it, then get a few shots in. You'll want to back away before the duke smacks you with his sword.

When you beat the Duke of Spain, you'll get the Black Onyx before...sitting down for some tea with the Duke that you just beat. Interesting. You'll get a password to save your progress as well as a more powerful sword. This is great, because you'll be able to beat bosses a little more easily over time.

Egypt

Not only will you be dealing with birds as well as skeletons with swords and shields, you'll also have to ride on

The hint on the scroll here is "White, Orange and Purple are all separated."

The little guys in the cloaks are faster than the skeletons.

The boomerang is...well...a boomerang. Throw it, and it will eventually return to you. If you need to switch between items, pause the game and choose the weapon you want. You don't have to wait to get the weapon of your choice again here, unlike in Castlevania.

Avoid the green lizard men altogether. They take way too much damage to destroy.

The swamp monsters will throw fish at you from a distance.

The panthers will lunge at you at a certain distance.

The ghosts take three hits to kill. They fly towards you and spit out smaller ghosts as projectiles.

The wasps move around in downwards arcs, curving up in the middle of their ascent before diving downward again. It's easy to anticipate their movements.

The Duke here is some sort of magician. You can strike the projectiles that come out of the Duke's magical staff with your sword to destroy them. To beat this guy, strike at the projectiles, then move in and hit him once before moving back. He'll jump over and land on the floor a short distance away. Use the white orb to do extra damage on him.

You'll get a pink jewel after beating this Duke.
