PrinceWatercress plays Mega Man 5 - Part 1 of 8

Well, I might as well get on with and beat Dr. Wily for a fifth time, I guess.

After that slight fiasco with The Marvin Missions, I recorded with the Windows 10 recorder instead of Bizhawk's built-in recorder. I also got a brand new microphone before recording: a Logitech H111. As you can tell, things got a lot better.

This time around, Proto Man's gone berserk, sided with Dr. Wily and kidnapped Dr. Light. Now Mega Man not only has to stop Proto Man, but figure out what's going on.

Star Man

You're going to be either in outer space or some sort of space station, so keep in mind that your jumps are going to be really, really high. As with all zero-gravity stages you've probably every seen in your life, you're going to avoid something that's really annoying. In this case, it's instant death spikes. Wouldn't you know it?

Speaking of which, you'll have two segments where the floor and ceiling have spikes on them. You'll find the other M in the second section, and it's quite difficult to miss. It's practically the easiest letter to get.

The stage begins with a meteor shower. You can outrun a good amount of them, but you may have to blast some of them.

The Space Mettaurs just fly towards you and shoot. They also fly in a zig-zag pattern as they do so, which makes them even more annoying.

There will be robots with big heads that hang on the ceiling and go up and down when you're nearby, shooting at you as they move. Charge up the Mega Buster to put them out of their misery.

You'll be stopped by robots with flashing lights on their "heads." They'll walk around on their AT-ST like legs and shoot lasers at you. Jump over the lasers and shoot at the flashing light on the "heads."

You'll then be dealing with platforms that go down as red robots fling energy balls at you with their little catapults. They'll be at the end of the platforms, and they're not worth worrying about...even though the pit missiles from Napalm Man's stage will.

Star Man will jump around with his Star Crash around him. Yep, it's another shield weapon. He'll eventually throw it at you from midair. If you expected him to have any other attacks, well, guess what? That's all he's got, and his movements are predictable enough to justify making him the first Robot Master to kill.

If you have the Wave Crash, you can actually hit him on the way down with it and not have to worry about charging a weapon up. You can also penetrate his shield, so you don't have to wait for him to throw the shield before damaging him.

Beating Star Man gives you the Star Crash. It's another shield weapon, and works just like Leaf Shield. You'll also get the Super Arrow, which doubles as a platform that can stick to walls and let Mega Man reach stuff.

Gravity Man

The arrows change the gravity in the section that Mega Man enters. Down arrows have him walking on the floor while up arrows have him on the ceiling. Be careful, as it is possible to fall up into pits as it is to climb down a ladder to reach something supposedly unreachable.

The green enemies with the one eye will switch gravity along with you.

The crushing robot this time is actually a huge, dark pink robot with a mohawk and two legs. He jumps into the air, stays in midair for almost a second and then slowly comes straight down. He's easier to deal with than the crushing robots of games past.

If you get hit while you're charging a shot, you're going to lose your charge and have to re-charge. This is a big change from the previous game and can be quite annoying at times, especially on later levels.

You'll also have cylinders that dump gumballs at you and turrets that pop out of the floor here as well. They're pretty easy.

Eddy the flip-top robot shows up here. The power-ups he'll give you are random, and sometimes he'll even give you a one-up. Expect to get weapons pick-ups when you don't need them, though.

Also, loving the parallax scrolling in the middle of the stage. For once, this game has something the other games lack...even if there's not much in the way of new additions in comparison to the previous games.

You'll soon notice a black circle with an M in it. You'll have to come close to dropping into the pit, then move into the down arrows to cause Mega Man to drop down and grab the letter. You can also move to the right, get close to the M, then switch the gravity by moving into it. and Be careful not to fall up and into the ceiling pit.

Near the end, you'll see two flying sphere enemies that are only vulnerable when they open their eyes and move. You can kinda see some past enemy ideas starting to be recycled here.

Gravity Man makes for an interesting boss fight. If you have Star Man's Star Crash weapon, you can get next to him and hit him with the shield when he changes gravity every so often, but he is very easy to fight with even the Mega Buster. It takes a bit of practice to hit Gravity Man as he's changing gravity, even as he shoots at you on his way up or down, but you'll be able to figure it out quickly.

Beating Gravity Man gives you the Gravity Hold, which can clear the screen of enemies..
