NintendoCapriSun plays Mega Man 9 - Part 1 of 9

After all this time, I'm finally doing the unthinkable.

I'm covering a modern, non-indie game. What.

Oh, and after this, NCS kicked the cigarette habit for good. Hell, yeah.

Not long after the events of the eighth game, the city is under attack once more. This time around, however, Dr. Light's robots are the cause of all this!

After seeing this on the news (with Chun-Li for a news reporter), they see a message from Dr. Wily saying Dr. Light was behind not only this, but also the events of the last eight games, with video footage of Dr. Light asking Wily to join him in world domination only for Wily to say he's changed his evil ways. He asks for donations to his Swiss Bank account so that he can complete the robots he is using to counteract all this. (The Swiss bank account number is a thinly veiled reference to December 17, 1987, the US release date of the first Mega Man game.

Sadly, people are actually believing this mess as people are blazing up Dr. Light's phone to complain. Mega Man heads out to do something about this.

Galaxy Man

It should be noted that you can't slide in this game, as the developers wanted this game to feel similar to the second game. You also can't charge your Mega Buster, either, so it's back to the old Proto Buster for you.

The Bolt currency system that made its debut back in the seventh game makes it return here, so they're not collectibles like they were in the last game.

The Mettaurs are back, and they use mostly the same attacks as they did in the early games: peeking out of their hats and shooting at you, then charging forward before coming to a full stop. Shoot at them when they're peeking out of their hats to get rid of them.

The UFOs fly around in sine-wave patterns. They're pretty easy to take down, for the most part.

The flashing pink rings act as teleporters. When you jump into one, you'll come back out through the other, going straight up like a human cannonball. You'll be using these to make your way through the stage, but as you go through the stage, you will have to move yourself around carefully so you don't fall into a pit of some sort.

The yellow propeller robots with the claws will carry you to the right for a short time, and you'll be going very quickly when they do. They won't pick you up, so you'll still have to jump over spike pits. They'll also stop you right in front of spike pits or right above them, so you'll have to position yourself carefully to avoid instant death. Sometimes, you can carefully nudge forward to get them to drop down before you can even get towards them, allowing you to get through areas more easily.

The green balls with the Yellow Devil eyes that stare at you split into three when shot. At least they don't split any further. They rush forward when they split into three, but they don't do much in the way of movement. The yellow ones split into four.

The shield robots from the third game are back. Hit them from behind to kill them.

At the end, when you jump into the pink flashing rings, keep going into the set to the left of the ones you come out of to get to the end.

Love how Galaxy Man cycles through the color spectrum. The NES couldn't do that as well as Mega Man 9 could.

Galaxy Man is perhaps the easiest with the ol' arm cannon. Watch out for the purple projectile that he shoots down, as it creates a Black Hole Bomb that will try to suck you in. Move away when it materializes. Galaxy Man will drop down after it opens up, so you can turn back, immediately shoot at him and run away again a couple of times if you can time your movements just right.

From there, he'll try to dive bomb you several times. Hit him with the arm cannon as he dives at you. You should be able to get a few good shots in. He'll teleport, too, but he always reappears on the ground and has to jump back into the air, so you can get some shots in there, as well.

If you have the Concrete Shot from Concrete Man, you can use that against him as well as it does the most damage.

Beating Galaxy Man will give you Black Hole Bomb. It works much like how Galaxy Man's does, and it can destroy any nearby enemies that it can suck in.

When you beat your first Robot Master, you'll get a cutscene where Auto and Roll will tell you that Dr. Light has been arrested. Mega Man's new adventure now involves clearing Dr. Light's name!
