DaveTheUsher plays Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game - Part 1 of 8

About time I covered the sequel.

Anyway, get ready for a really awesome game. I know I am.

The game was released in Europe as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles II: The Arcade Game, and in Japan as simply Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles due to the first game having an entirely different name that I can't remember off the top of my head.

Scene 1

Fire! We gotta get April out!!

Well, the controls are kinda self-explanatory. You can jump, you can whack Foot Soldiers, and you can move around in eight directions. That's it, really.

Press A and B at the same time to perform a stronger strike than with B alone. You'll be using this quite a lot.

Some of the Foot Soldiers throw shurikens and other things at you, but you can knock them away by attacking them.

The Pizza Hut logos are from a sponsorship deal that came with the game. The coupons for the Personal Pan Pizza have long since expired, but I'd still like to look at them just because.
They were replaced with "Turtle Racing" in the Famicom version.

Unlike the purple Foot Clan soldiers, which take two hits and throw shurikens, the blue ones throw knives.

Those large steel balls that drop from the stairways will definitely cause more damage than the Foot Clan soldiers can at times. Jump kicking over them helps get past them quite easily.

The white soldiers carry swords, and they'll even jump up and try to hit you with a downward stab. Yikes! They look almost like samurais for some reason. I blame the massive amounts of white. Thankfully, this is probably the only version of the Foot Clan soldiers that you can whack repeatedly without any impunity, since they usually don't strike back whenever you attack them.

Three Roadkill Rodneys show up at the end. They have a laser as well as an electric whip attack, but they can easily be destroyed by trapping them in a corner and mashing the B button until they die. Then you'll hear April O'Neill scream, and you'll rush into her room.

The red Foot Clan soldiers carry guns. They try to hit you with the butt of them and also shoot at the floor. Thankfully, they're not much harder than the other varieties of soldiers you've seen so far.

The first boss is Rocksteady, who drills straight through the building into April's room via a Module. Jump kick him, then jump away from him so he doesn't kick you. That kick sends you back a bit and it's really annoying. He'll shoot his gun at you and he can also shoot into the air, hitting you on your way down. He can be really annoying, especially if you keep hitting him more than one or two times in quick succession with regular attacks.

Not only does he have a kick and a machine gun, he'll also try to ram into you. He goes into a special animation when he does this, though, so you'll be able to tell when he's about to run into you.

The more Rocksteady (or any boss) flashes, the more progress you've made on him. When a boss starts flashing really fast, you're about to beat it.

When you beat Rocksteady, Shredder appears and kidnaps April before jumping out of the window with her!

Scene 2

C'mon, after that Shredder creep!!

If a Foot Soldiers throws a manhole cover at you, send it right back at him to instantly kill the guy. This is one of the most interesting things you can do in an old-school TMNT game.

You'll also see Shredder on TV, holding April hostage. Jerk.

You can hit the parking meter to send it at an enemy, and one of the fire hydrants can also be hit to send a Foot Clan ninja packing.

Some of the Foot Clan soldiers throw dynamite. Take those guys out with jump kicks!

If you see pizza, grab it. It will refill your entire life bar.
