PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 20 of 20

In this entry, we finally put this game out of its misery and beat Refang and Dearth Voyd, bringing our adventure and our quest for divine power to an end. We then get an ending that doesn't reflect what we just did at all and then I rant about the game. Not gonna lie, this game wasn't very good.

Once you have all four keys, press Triangle at the door to insert all the keys, then have the Strength spell equipped. Use it on yourself often as you stay close to Refang and keep hitting him. He will keep switch weapons as he keeps hitting you, but as long as you stay close and keep hitting him with punches on the ground and you keep casting the Strength spell on yourself often, you'll beat Refang.

When Kongo demands the divine power from Refang, Refang will tell him that fighting is not the real path and that he had the divine power within him all along to get this far, then tells him that Dearth Voyd is the real enemy, as this is the ultimate purpose of the divine power. From here, grab everything, then jump on the Jet Cloud and press X. It's final boss time.

For the final boss battle, you'll have to ride on the jet cloud as you move from one side of the arena to the other to hit two switches: one on the left and one on the right. As you do this, you'll need to have the Strength spell handy to get past the barriers. You'll also have demonic enemies that will fly at you and pack a punch, but you can easily freeze them with the Ice spell. Take them out when necessary, since you don't want to be knocked into the red insta-death beam walls that line the arena...although knocking the enemies is not only possible, but also kind of nice.

Once you hit both switches, head back to the center and fire the cannon to damage Dearth Voyd.

On the second and third hit, you'll need to use the Strength spell followed by the Fire and/or Ice spells to get past the ice barriers followed by the shrinking beams. You'll need Fire followed by Strength to get past both sets of lasers between the switch and the barrier - on both sides - and once you fire that cannon a third time, Dearth Voyd is defeated. Congratulations! Now enjoy the crap ending and the rant that I have about this game!

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 19 of 20

I really hate the column-switch maze puzzle that is in this one part. You can figure stuff out with trial and error, but even then, it's severely frustrating. I'm surprised I managed to keep that

The last teleporter is to the far right.

The first part has you freezing crusher platforms with the Ice spell when they are low enough. From here, shrink yourself, then freeze the lower platform and go all the way to the wall on the right. When the lower platform un-freezes, it will move back and forth. Wait for it to get out of the way before heading downwards, where you'll take out a guard before dealing with more of the crusher platforms much like you did at the start. The only difference is that the ceiling will be a bit lower and you won't have as much room, so you'll need to be more careful here. You'll also need to set the things that are holding some of the crusher platforms you'll need to ride on on fire with the Fire spell to free the platforms. There is a monkey icon at the end, but go to the right and take out the soldier and hit the checkpoint before getting it.

From here, freeze the crusher platform that is in the tight spot with the Ice spell, then roll under it to get to Keyhole 1 and another checkpoint. Freeze the crusher that is up ahead, then hurry to the right and hit the switch. From here, you'll be in a massive switch and column puzzle. You'll have to play with the switches and even freeze some of them just to get to where you need to go. Don't forget that you can jump through the holes in the ceiling, assuming you know where they are. At the top, get all the columns down. From there, freeze the fourth column when it is up, freeze the first column when it is down, hit the second switch, go down, hit the first switch, then hit the third, and you should be able to get to Key 1. Once you get Key 1, you'll be out of here. Get out of the key from above, then go left and head back to Keyhole 1. Get the key. You're done here.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 18 of 20

Of the four teleporter pad icons in the Celestial Heavens, this feels the shortest.

For this entry, I enter the teleporter at the far left.

Head to the left. This gets the column at the start to move around. You'll need to walk off the edges and then jump after you run off to get the turnips between the platforms. Head back to the start, pull the switch, then shrink yourself and push the cylinder tot he right onto the nearby column. Go up and take out the guard, then hit the nearby switch to raise the column up. Shrink the cylinder and push it to the right past the conveyor belts, then take out the two guards and push the cylinder to the left. Hit the checkpoint and pull the switch to open a path below. Go down, take out the guards, and push the cylinder to the right. Double jump to the check point and pull the switch to continue left. Take the cylinder with you and push it on the column at the end.

From here, take out the guard, shrink yourself, then pull the nearby switch to move the column upwards. Head back to the cylinder, shrink the cylinder, then shrink yourself. Keep holding Left on the D-Pad to ensure that you keep pushing the cylinder away from the crusher, even as you and the cylinder return to regular size. Push it to the arrows to the left and pull the switch above, then take out the guards that show up. Get Key 1 after getting the turnip and the monkey icon that shows up when you jump straight up from the cylinder.

Go back to the start and head to Keyhole 1 to use the Key. Get the icon. Leave.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 17 of 20

Well, at least this part is easier. Too bad the other two parts aren't.

The next teleporter I enter is in the center right.

You start off by jumping from one small blue platform to another. At least they don't disappear. The first crusher leads to a monkey icon if you stand on top of it.

After some wrap-around jumping, you get to fight off some more enemies before a blue cylinder shows. You'll need to push it to the left where the column in the floor is and jump to the left for a monkey icon and a switch. When you pull the switch, the column you just pushed the cylinder onto moves up. From here, you can jump off the cylinder to the right for Key 1.

Put Key 1 into Keyhole 1, which is to the left. Grab Key 3, then move towards the background. Shrink the cylinder that is to the right, push it onto the column that is in the ground nearby, then go back into the foreground and pull the switch on the right. This pushes the column up. Pull the switch on the left to push the cylinder forward. Pull both switches, freeze the column below with Ice, go back and hit the right switch, then get on the top of the column and unfreeze the column. You'll be moved upwards. Push the cylinder to the right for a few turnips and a switch. Pull the switch to open up the area where Key 2 is. From there, jump to the left from on top of the cylinder and make your way to Key 2. From here, go all the way back. To get out of this area, walk all the way to the left where the column is.

Go further back and put Key 2 into Keyhole 2. Cast the Strength spell on yourself to keep from taking damage as you take everything, then go to Keyhole 3 and use Key 3 there. Get the key and exit. You're done here.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 16 of 20

The things I do for 100% because of the stringent save conditions at this point...

The first teleporter pad that I take is in the center left.

The platforms that move in and out of the walls cannot be frozen, so you have to jump from one to another and time your jumps. You just have to tough them out. Above this set of platforms is two monkey icons.

From here, you'll have to play with two switches. Move the left one first to move the bottom and center walls, then freeze the center wall, go back and move the right one. If you hurry (which shouldn't be a problem), you can continue on.

From past here, go right. Hit the switch at the end, then go all the way to the left and try to head back to the beginning of the level. You can now drop down an area that you couldn't access before. Use Strength in case you fall all the way down so you don't take damage from the drop, then make your way left. Here will be a cloud with Key 1 to the left. You have to use the Shrink spell to get on the cloud without breaking it, then get the key, get back on the cloud and get back to safe ground. How you're supposed to figure out to use the Shrink spell is completely unclear.

From here, you'll need to head back to the beginning of the level where Keyhole 1 is. From here, jump from one platform that expands and contracts to the other. The series of ropes that are here will have the hardest pick-ups to get in the game, and you have to double jump at the right elevation on every rope to get all the stuff and grab the next rope, and you can tell just from how many times I fail at getting everything just how bad this is.

From here, you can get a few more turnips and another monkey icon followed by the first of four keys. Good. Riddance.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 15 of 20

We have just one more level before we make it to the top of the Celestial Heavens...only to get soundly mocked.

You get a battle with a bunch of Celestial warriors at the start. The second and fifth hand rails in the background are where you don't want to stand, due to those segments of the platform lowering when you get on them. To make matters worse, the Celestial warriors can get a lucky shot on you and knock you into the abyss, forcing you to start the whole battle over.

After this, it's time to jump upwards on clouds to another platform. Use the Shrink spell to avoid the crushers and get Key 1, then continue to the right. Take out the warrior, then continue right to Keyhole 1. You'll be travelling in an even narrow elevator, and there will still be bombs. The bombs are positioned right, left, right, right, left, right, left, left, right, right, left. If you need to, use the Ice spell to freeze the elevator temporarily so you can re-position yourself.

To the right of Keyhole 2 is Key 2 itself. Shrink yourself, double jump onto the conveyor belt, grab the key, turn around, shrink the blue column to your left, cast the Shrink spell on yourself again and push the column to the left and out of your way. You can then put Key 2 into Keyhole 2, go up for four turnips and an extra life, then take the elevator above. In this elevator, you'll have quite a bit of room to maneuver, and you'll need to pull all the switches to move the ceilings out of the way or else you're going to get crushed. This is where the Ice spell will really come in handy, as you'll need it to freeze the floor so you can fight off the enemies that show up and give yourself extra time to pull all the switches as well as re-position yourself to avoid the bombs. Once the camera zooms in on you inside the elevator, you'll reach the top.

At the top, you'll meet Refang, who will taunt you from behind a door. You'll need to get four keys to reach him, and to go through them...you'll have to enter more teleport pads! Isn't this fun?!? (No.)

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 14 of 20

It's time for more platforming in the Celestial Gardens...and this time, it's a LOT harder.

Just like last time, have the Strength spell ready. This time around, it is much easier to drop down from a high height and hurt yourself, and if you have the Strength style active, you can minimize the damage. Also, be ready to freeze platforms with the Ice platforms if you have trouble making the jumps.

Remember that you have a few seconds on the small cloud platforms before they fall out from under you.

The cloud enemies that fly around and zap you can only be hurt by standing on them with the Strength spell active. You can also jump kick them, but good luck doing that when they're darting all over the place.

The human enemies are pretty fast and can hit you when you least expect them. You can either hit them with the Power Rod, or you can freeze them with the Ice spell and then hit them to shatter and kill them.

There will eventually be a fork in the road. You'll need to go up at that fork to find Key 1, so you can unlock Keyhole 1 later.

From Keyhole 1, you can go up, but you'll need Key 2 to unlock the elevator for Keyhole 2. Watch out for Celestial Soldiers while on the platforms and while jumping to Key 2. Why the game throws enemies in a spot like this and expects you to deal with them, I will never know. You have to freeze the platform after Keyhole 1 at the proper time to get rid of the enemies that spawn in mid-air. As for the cloud platform, you'll have to use the Power Rod to take out the soldiers for

For the narrow elevator at the end, the bombs are located as follows. Right, right, left, left, left, right, right, right, left, left, and right.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 13 of 20

It's now time for the final area in the game: the Celestial Heavens. But to get there, we're going to have to make an arduous climb across a couple of levels.

Journey to the Celestial Heavens

Gain the divine power

You can go right for some turnips, but you'll need to bounce upwards on the clouds to get upwards into the Celestial Heavens. Sadly, the first thing you're going to notice is that you'll barely be able to tell where you're going due to the action being zoomed in. I wish the camera moved back just a little bit so that every bounce upwards didn't seem like a leap of faith. At least you have infinite lives.

Once you make it to the first checkpoint, bust out the Strength spell so you don't take damage in case you make one wrong move and land on a hard surface. You have infinite magic, so there's no point in not using it.

If you need to, use the Ice spell to freeze some platforms.

When you get on the elevator and hit the switch, you'd better be ready to avoid the mines as you go up. After the first elevator, take the low road and bounce to a switch, then take the upper road and bounce upwards to lower the second elevator and avoid more bombs.

After some more bouncing upwards and riding more platforms, you'll reach another elevator. Freeze the platform before hitting the switch, then unfreeze the platform to enter the next level.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 12 of 20

This is the exact moment that the game went from okay to exhausting. I wish I was kidding.

In this last teleporter pod area, the game is going to pull a whole load of dick moves just to make everything more difficult for the sake of it.

When you see the rock columns, you'll need to punch the rock columns in order to cross the bridge leading to a battle where the cave goes completely dark as you fight multiple Minotaurs. Why the game though this was a good idea, I have no idea. From here, you'll have to climb some columns to get to Key 1, then get back, all without being singed by flame jets.

Once you put Key 1 into Keyhole 1, you won't be able to return when you make your way further up from it. You'll have to destroy even more columns to open up some other areas in this maze. There's also an area where you have to shrink yourself and an imp, then get the imp on the floor switch, get away from the switch, shrink to get away, and then get the puzzle out of your hair. If switching spells wasn't clunky then, it certainly is now!

With the steel box platforms above the lava, you'll also have to deal with steam blasts pushing you off the platforms and into the lava. On the other side, you'll find the last book and the exit. Hope you found 80% of all the items here, or you're not saving your game despite the last bit of the Javan Mountain that you have to do.

Once you give the last book, you'll have to fight your way to Runlay. It doesn't help that the shaking caused by the earthquake makes it really difficult to figure out where things are, as there are insta-kill flame jets on the floor that will force you to do fights over.

Once you reach Runlay, hit the switch to free her. She will give you the Magic Crystal, which gives you unlimited magic. From here, it's on to the Celestial Heavens.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 11 of 20

We go through the last of the teleporter pads, but that leaves us with nine books, not ten. We'll have to do some more exploring after this to get that last book.

For this entry, I pick the teleporter pad on the right.

To get the items below the platforms, you'll need to climb down when you see a thin column of rocks underneath. Believe it or not, you can climb up and down these thin columns to get to the lava pools below and jump for items. The Strength spell will keep from being instantly burnt to a crisp for a second or two if you fall into the lava, but you'll have to refill your health afterwards.

If you grab a book, wait for any nearby doors that are triggered by the book to open before hitting a checkpoint; otherwise, you will have to reset and do everything in the level over.

The jumping fireballs will burn you up unless you have the Strength spell active.

The puzzles where you have to freeze an imp on a floor switch with the Ice spell return here, but with less space, doing these puzzles are a lot more frustrating due to the clunk game physics.

There are some steel box platforms throughout the level, and some of them will move up and down. Be sure to use the camera, as there will be flame jets in some parts that you sometimes won't be able to see until it is too late.

To get the stuff above the exit, you have to jump to the platform to the left of the exit before where the imps appear and keep jump kicking over and over. I wish I was kidding.

Once you find all the books in all three teleporter pads, there is still one more book to get...and you'll have to go through one more teleporter pad.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 10 of 20

The left maze was full of twists and turns. The center maze is a bit more linear, but you now have to get enemies to stay on switches while dealing with lava and steam.

For the second teleporter, I enter the one in the center.

The imps carry hammers and will try to smash you. If you approach them, however, they run away; if you face away from them while nearby, they will go after you.

The black pipes shoot steam. You'll need to use the steam to push your jumps further. Perhaps not surprisingly, the game will later use these as an obstacle to push you back while you are in mid-air.

The lava is obviously instant death.

Duck down and roll to avoid being blown back by the wind currents.

There are a few switches in this maze; you'll need to use them all in order to get all three books here.

There are times when you will have to use the imps for puzzles. You have to get close, look away, then turn back and freeze them with the Ice spell right when they are standing on a floor switch. As long as you are nowhere near the imp, the imp will stay on the switch. This is the complete basis for the easiest book to get in the maze.

The lava pool with the platforms moving back and forth is the worst part of the maze. The platforms barely move close enough to where you need to jump at and you get pushed back and forth as you stay on the platforms. You have to be on the very edge and hope that the steam is working in your favor

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 9 of 20

After beating the Celestial forces - for now - it's off to Javan Mountain, where we have to rescue a dragon and get a crystal of great magical power, and it's not going to be easy.

Javan Mountain

Pass the Judges of the Dead and rescue Runlay

While you don't need the Monkey Icons for lives anymore thanks to the Pearl of Life, you'll still need to collect them to make it easier to save your game.

Push the box at the start all the way down. There will be a switch behind a destructible wall that you can punch down; be sure to break the wall and pull the lever there before pushing the box all the way down  and to the switch on the left.

From here, shrink and make your way down. The Minotaurs (bull men?) will charge at you and knock you a good way back if they connect, so hit them with the Power Rod or freeze them with ice and punch them. You'll eventually have to go back outside and wrap around the mountain in order to get Key 1. Do that, then keep going down to continue. After putting Key 1 into Keyhole 1, keep going right so you don't get crushed by the brown part of the ceiling that falls down.

As you continue, you'll run into Batty. He will tell you that Runlay has a powerful magic crystal that you'll have to get in order to achieve divine power. To free Runlay, however, you'll have to get past the Judges of the Dead. Drop down to meet them, then you'll be taken down to three teleporter pads to get ten books. I enter the one on the left.

The green beams shrink you. Shrink down, head left, and defeat the minotaur. From here, you'll have to take multiple paths. One of the books is really easy to get to if you just go left from the first checkpoint. The second one will require Key 1 to get, and one is past a very stubborn flame jet. You'll need all the books in a section to get to the exit.

As you move around, you'll have to move past flame jets. These things will kill you if you run into them, so be careful as you progress. There is one that leads to the book nearest the exit. Jump towards it so that the flame goes off below you, then return to the left before you drop down and then move over the flame jet to get the third book.

Throughout the maze, you'll be using the Shrink spell often. If you need to, re-cast your shrink spell to stay shrunk so you don't get crushed.

Once you make it to the exit, you'll re-appear back in front of the Judges of the Dead. Press Triangle to give them the books, and you'll return to the teleporter pads.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 8 of 20

In this entry, we reach the top of the Flower Fruit Fortress and face Dopuck in our defiance against the Celestial Fleet. From there, it's off to Javan Mountain.

Be careful on the ropes. Always hold Up on the Control pad while jumping from the middle of a rope. Don't jump from too high up the rope, or else you'll hit the ceiling and land in the spikes below.

After the ropes, use the Fire spell to get past the ice barriers and hit the lever, then go up, freeze the platform with Ice, hit the lever to the right of the platform and take the platform up. Go right, freeze the left wall of the two, flip the switch so that the right wall goes down, get away from the switch and wait for the left wall to go up. Go back to the left wall, freeze it again, then press the switch near the other wall that is on the lower level. From here, freeze both walls, hit the upper switch, then get away and wait for both walls to un-freeze. You're outta here.

There is a ledge you can jump to after this for pick-ups; it's just hard to get to sometimes.

At the keyhole, and hit the switch, then go down on the platform, ride the next one over the spikes, then jump over the bomb with a double jump. Get the key, take out the soldiers, freeze the right platform, then get the Fire magic ready as you wait. Set yourself on fire to get past the ice barrier, then immediately switch to Shrink, shrink yourself and hurry left to avoid getting crushed.

Hit the lever near the trap door to refill your magic. Go back up and use the Fire magic to get to the switch. Before you pull the switch, freeze the crusher wall, then pull it and go down. When the crusher wall moves right, you're free to continue on.

Go back up to the keyhole. At the checkpoint, go down towards the foreground. There will be three levers. Pull the middle switch to move the platform, and pull it again to stop it at the middle of the pit. Pull the left one to drop a box on it, then pull the right one to move the wall on the right up. Use the platform to move the box to the other end, and pull the right switch to move the wall down and keep the box there. Pull the right lever again to get the wall back up, then take the platform to the other side. Avoid the bombs as you collect everything you need for item collection and healing up, then press X on the Jet Cloud. You'll soon be facing Dopuck.

To beat Dopuck, you'll need to fight off the Celestial Guards with your punches. Stay under them to make it easier to hit them. As you do, you'll also want to avoid the bombs that are flying around. When you beat a guard, they may leave a bomb. Go back to the cannon in the center of the room, press Triangle, and you'll launch a bomb at Dopuck's ship with the cannon. When you hit Dopuck's ship three times, Milesight and Sonicmate will congratulate you, telling you that the Emperor has pulled back the Celestial Fleet and has allowed the monkeys to live in peace in Flower Fruit Mountain. You'll also receive the Pearl of Life, which will give you unlimited lives! Now you can't get a Game Over from this point on!

You'll then get another cutscene where you'll meet Runlay the White Dragon Horse. Runlay lived peacefully in a swamp, using her powers to torment villages by causing floods and terrible storms. Eventually, Runlay was punished by the Guardian for her cruelty and was banished to a mountain. In the mountain, her dragon globe was stolen by the Slime Lord and Runlay was forced to be his slave. Interestingly, even though he is mentioned in the game's cutscenes, the Slime Lord does not even appear in the game at all.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 7 of 20

In this entry, we free the last of the monkeys, but we still have a bit more climbing to do if we want to face Dopuck.

For this video, I enter the one that is down and to the right from Fanya.

Be careful making your way down. Pull the lever, freeze the wall that goes down, pull the lever again, go back to the wall and wait. Freeze the platform ahead, then hit the lever and get on the platform. Make your way up and watch out for the bombs as you go.

Take the platform over the spikes. If you want to get all the turnips, you'll need to freeze the platform. There are two extra lives above you; you'll need to double jump off the rope near the ceiling to get to them. Carefully make your way past the bombs, then fight off the soldiers at the next checkpoint with the Power Rod. Make your way left, get the extra life from above, go up the rope for turnips, then head right at the bottom of the rope and get to the next checkpoint.

Pull the lever, take out the soldier and go back to where the shaking platforms are. Hit the checkpoint, then go down to reach the cage. Go down to the cage, freeze it, hit Switch 1 and beat up the soldiers. Go to the right and hit Switch 2 to free all the monkeys. Go up from the switch and pull the lever there, then get the key and go back to Fanya to use Key 1. There will be four walls and two switches to work with, and if you pull a switch and cause a wall to move to the background layer, freeze it with the Ice spell. This will make it easier to move all the walls to once side so you can get over the spikes.

From here, you'll have another switch and wall puzzles, and this time, the switches and walls will be color coded. You'll need to freeze the walls so they stay in the middle as you pull the blue and green levers so you can go up and get Key 2. Make sure the spiked ceiling does not come down on you. Once you've got Key 2, use it in Keyhole 2. You'll then need to play with the blue and red levers this time around, making sure to freeze walls when they are in the middle when necessary. If you can do it quickly enough, getting out of here should be no problem. You're done with this section.

Once you come back, you can now go to Dopuck's flagship. Go up and fight the soldiers, and get the 1-Up. From here, you'll find yet another teleport pod that leads to another area.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 6 of 20

Another video, another teleporter. This did not give me as much grief as the first teleporter did.

For this video, I enter the teleporter in the middle.

At the start, you'll need to use the Power Rod to take out the Celestial soldiers before you get squished by the crushers. Shrink the box, shrink yourself, go right and use the crate to get past the spikes. The path above leads to a keyhole, so go down instead. Hit the switch above the conveyor belt while avoiding the bomb below it, then shrink yourself to get past the other bomb and toggle the switch at the other end.

Head left and drop down, and take out the soldiers on the way for two turnips and two extra lives. Continue right, get on the  conveyor belt and make short hops, making big jumps only to get over bombs. At the checkpoint, shrink yourself and use the Power Rod to take care of the soldier. Make your way up, go left for an extra life and a magic refill, then go right and take out the soldier.

Take the teleporter up and head right. Shrink yourself first to get the extra life, then go through the gap, shrink the box, freeze the cage and pull lever #1. Take out the soldiers on top of the cage, shrink yourself, go right and pull lever #2. Go right, pull the lever, and get Key 1.

When you grab the key, the platform near the conveyor belt with the bombs that you took not long ago will go up and down. You'll need to head back to that conveyor belt and get on the platform. shrink yourself on the conveyor belt and run left to get past all the bombs, then get on the platform. Pull the switch at the top. From here, use your Shrink spell to get past the bombs, and make your way back to the keyhole. You're done.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 5 of 20

Now that we've learned all that we can from Subodye, it's time to take on the Celestial Heavens in an attempt to become even more powerful.

Flower Fruit Mountain

Rescue your friends and defeat the Celestial Fleet

To use the Power Rod, you'll have to double tap Square in mid-air. This will cause Kongo to spin around with the Power Rod in his hands for a few seconds, destroying anybody he touches. Unfortunately, he gets dizzy and is stunned for a few seconds afterwards. Now you can get out of the room at the start.

When you continue, you'll run into Fanya, who will tell you that Wowser, Redchimp and Sarge have been taken hostage by the Celestial soldiers along with all the children. From there, you'll have to go through four teleporters (not just one like I originally thought). I enter the one all the way to the left. Just walk up into a teleporter and you'll use it to go to another section.

From here, your skills with the four magic spells will be put to the test. Use Fire to get past the ice fields, Ice to freeze platforms in case they move too fast for your liking, and use the Triangle Button to flip switches like you did in the abandoned nuclear plant. Also, using the Power Rod will wipe out the Celestial soldiers in one hit, but still leaves you stunned for a few seconds, so be careful.

The purple spiked bombs are balls. If you touch just one, it's instant death. The spikes are also instant death, and they will be impossible to get out of if you jump into them.

To free Sarge, freeze the cage with the Ice spell, then hit switch #1 and wait for the cage to thaw out. Go right and flip switch #2. From here, you can freeze the platform above where switch #2 is, hit the nearby wooden lever, un-freeze the platform and then get the key where the cage was. From there, you can use Key #1.

If you need to, use the Ice spell to freeze the platforms afterwards, as they can be rather fast and hard to get to. I made those two platform look easier than they actually were.

You will see four switches: two on one layer and two on the other. You need to make sure the layer with the bombs is in the background. Hit a switch, then trap both bombs near one of the switches. From there, you can easily get to the other one in the background and flip it. This is a very simple puzzle, assuming you can get the timing down on trapping the bombs temporarily. Once you flip the two switches near the exit, you can get out of this part of the level. One down, three to go.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 4 of 20

Now that we have all four spells, we can get the Power Rod...but we're not done yet. We'll also be learning how to use the Jet Cloud and fly around Son Wukong-style.

Now that you're back in the power plant, use the Ice spell to freeze the crusher when it's up. From here, you'll be using all of your spells to get to the Jet Cloud.

To the right of the first lift platform is a Monkey Icon. Riding the platform and jumping left leads to another.

Sometimes, you won't be able to ride a platform until you use the lever nearby. There's just one problem: you obviously can't be on the platform and at the lever at the same time. What do you do? You freeze the platform with the Ice spell, move the lever so that the platform goes where you need it to, then either wait for the platform to thaw out or thaw it out more quickly with the Fire spell. Stay on the platform. You've made progress!

The conveyor belts, thankfully, show where they will move you with the chevrons.

If you start hearing weird disco music, you'll have to battle a bunch of enemies before moving on. You'll want to be full on health and magic before entering these areas. You'll have to use the shrink magic on all the mice to get rid of them more efficiently. They'll show up one at a time at first, then in pairs, then in a few sets of three. These fighting sections show up every so often, but they are absolutely annoying.

You'll eventually find the Jet Cloud. Jump on it and press X to leave the power plant.

Keep holding X to ascend on the Jet Cloud, and tap the button to maintain altitude. All you have to do is fly to the end. However, if you explore, you'll be able to find all the power-ups. If you see a lone turnip, grab it. There is a chain of falling turnips. Catch them before they fall to the ground.

When you make it to the end, you'll see Subodye one last time. From here, you'll have to face Prince Nata to get the Power Rod. Here, your skills with the Jet Cloud will be put to the test. To beat Prince Nata, you'll need to get close to Prince Nata when he isn't glowing red and punch him. As you do this, you'll need to avoid the walls and the green lasers, which will kill you, and you'll also want to avoid the green acid on the floor and the rings that Prince Nata throws. Once you beat Prince Nata, you'll be able to get the Power Rod.

You'll then get a cutscene where the gods find out that the monkeys are preparing to fight the Celestial Heavens in their mountain fortress. Dopuck is sent to fight the monkeys with the Celestial Fleet.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 3 of 20

In this entry, we learn the Fire and Ice spells as we trek through the abandoned power plant for the Power Rod.

The pistons act as trampolines, and the electric barriers will instantly kill you if you do not cast the Growth magic on yourself. If you're glowing yellow from the spell, you'll just take damage instead.

After the battle with the two rats, there will be a door that you won't be able to open. You'll head back to Master Subodye's dojo to learn Fire magic.

Pressing L1 with Fire equipped will set yourself on fire, which will be useful if you are about to go through a blue magical barrier but will also eat away at your health unless you go through said barrier. Pressing R1 lets you set other things on fire. Don't forget that you can aim up and down with the Fire magic with Up and Down on the Control Pad.

With the Fire magic, you can now destroy the light blue screens above the gates to open them. As long as something is glowing red and has the red globes around it, it will be hot, so don't touch what you just set on fire. Once you're done with the training, it's back to the power plant.

You'll soon find yourself in a maze once you get past the gates that require the Fire magic. There are five keys, and you'll have to explore through the maze to get them all. Once you find them all, you'll have to climb to the top to use them and continue past the maze. The best thing to do here is to explore a whole background or foreground layer until you've completely exhausted it, so you can find as many power-ups as possible and make finding all five keys easier.

The Growth magic can be used to go through the green acid pools unharmed. It's really useful when you want to get the turnips that are directly above it.

One of the Monkey icons will be hidden behind a foreground wall. Jump to get it.

After the maze, there will be a fast-moving crusher that you won't be able to move past on your own. Subodye will contact you and bring you back to the dojo to learn your fourth and final spell: the Ice magic.

Pressing L1 will freeze yourself into a statue, but if you've set yourself on fire, you can use this to cool yourself down. It is also useful if you go through a red magical barrier, which will set you on fire if you go through it. Pressing R1 will let you freeze things, and you can also aim upwards and downwards with Up and Down on the Control Pad. You can also freeze enemies with the Ice spell and destroy them in one punch.

As established with the Fire spell, Fire and Ice cancel each other out. To complete the training, you'll need to combine the Shrink spell with the Fire and Ice spells to get through a long and very narrow crawlspace and get past some magical barriers. You'll have to not only shrink yourself, but also think fast with the R2 and L2 buttons to switch between Fire and Ice and get to the other side of the crawlspace without squishing yourself. If you need to, shrink yourself a second time if you don't think you're going to make it. You'll extend your shrink spell on yourself just a little bit longer. Just mind your magic meter.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 2 of 20

Now that we've become a disciple of Master Subodye, we can learn magic and put our skills to the test in an abandoned atomic power plant (wait, what?) to find the Power Rod.

When you continue with the game, you'll notice another gauge to the right of your health. This will be for your magic, which you'll be learning very, very shortly.

Move away from the dojo and continue to the right. You'll meet Master Subodye. Head further to the right to learn about the glowing magic pad, which will refill your magic meter as you stand on it. Fill up the meter, then head to the right to get the green crystal and learn your first spell: the Shrink spell. You can use this spell to shrink yourself as well as other items. Use L1 to cast the spell on yourself, and use R1 to cast the spell on objects. Watch your magic meter!

When you shrink yourself or other objects, green globes of light will surround yourself or the object you shrunk, depending on what you did. As time passes, the globes will float away from you or the object one by one. When the last globe leaves, you or the object will return to normal size.

Be careful when shrinking yourself to go down very narrow corridors. The shrink spell can and will wear off while in the corridor, and if that happens, you will be squashed and killed, causing the loss of a life.

Once you make it to the end, you'll be taken to an abandoned atomic power plant (wait, what?!?) to look for the Power Rod. Seriously, we go to something that should not exist in this time and place to find something that we need to become a stronger warrior. How this works, I have no clue.

Search For The Ultimate Weapon

Obtain The Power Rod

There will be a magic pad to stand on to refill your magic to the right at the start. From here, you'll need to jump your way to the top. Watch the platforms, and be careful of the platforms coated in slime, as they are slippery. Also, pools of glowing green acid will eat you alive in seconds, so stay out of them.

When you reach the solid ground at the top, you'll have a few opportunities to shrink yourself and other objects. Do this to get through. When you jump to the pipe that you need to climb down, hold down Up as you jump to it to ensure that you grab it.

Don't forget to use Circle and the Control Pad to move the camera around and look for pick-ups...you'll need 'em!

The rats will run at you and knock you very far back unless you shrink them like you would stationary object. Don't forget that you have to duck and them attack to hit them. Since they are shrunken down, they will take fewer hits to defeat.

You'll eventually return to the start, but at this point, you should have Key 1. If you don't have Key 1, which is located before the pipe you have to climb down, you'll have to go all the way back up just to get it.

In the second set of platforms in the background after Keyhole 1, there will be acid droplets that drop down. Do not let these droplets hit you; they will hurt. When you reach the top of this area, jump in the middle of the tunnel you have to go through to find a hidden Monkey icon.

You'll eventually find a fragile crate of hazardous waste. As soon as you touch it, Subodye will contact you and send you back to the dojo.

When you return to the dojo, you'll get the yellow crystal and the Growth spell. Use L2 and R2 to switch between spells. With the Growth spell - also known as the Strength spell - you can strengthen your body with L1 and strengthen other objects with R1. By using L1, you can make yourself nearly invincible and give yourself the ability to push heavy objects, and you can give that magic to objects with R1 to make them less fragile and more impervious.

Shrink and Growth are opposite of each other, and can cancel each other out. You can use Growth on something shrunken down - including yourself - to restore it to normal size, and you can cancel out the Growth spell on yourself or an object with the Shrink spell. This is useful if you don't want to wait for a spell to wear off...but your magic is limited, so plan ahead!

Once you've made it to the end of the training session, you'll return to the power plant so you can cast Growth on the box, make it stronger and then push it into the acid to use it as a makeshift raft.

PrinceWatercress plays Monkey Magic - Part 1 of 20

I find it hard to believe this anime got a video game, and I also find it hard to believe the game - and the anime - got an American dub and release, given that the anime got cut down at only 13 episodes due to low ratings in Japan when they were going for 52.

The story begins with a meteor containing a being crashing into Flower Fruit Mountain. When the meteor lands, the meteor splits open to reveal a young monkey named Kongo. As this happens, the demons of the underworld and their leader, Dearth Voyd, become aware of Kongo's entry into planet Earth, and Dearth Voyd sends Batty, an evil bat, to spy on Kongo after becoming aware of Kongo's power and draw him to the dark side in an attempt to wipe out the Guardian's teachings forever.

Years later, as Kongo is trying to become the strongest warrior there is, Batty tells Kongo that they key to doing just that is to achieve divine power, and that he must start by climbing up a mountain to train under Master Subodye. From here, the game begins.

Enter Stone Monkey

Find Subodye's school and master your magic power

You'll crash land in a meteor, then you'll be able to control Kongo. Your health is in the upper-left corner of the screen.

When you head to the right, you'll meet Batty. Batty will give you hints on how to play the game early on, and will also show up to give you hints if you get stuck at certain points.

The lanterns are checkpoints. If you run into one, you will return to it when you lose a life.

To cross bridges leading to platforms in the foreground or background, use Up and Down on the Control Pad.

The turnips are used to refill a little bit of health, so be sure to turn to them when you need to in order to stay alive.

Be sure to jump clear over the bear traps, as they will instantly kill you if you move into them.

Keyholes will need keys to unlock paths to other areas. You'll need to find the key, which will have a number on it, first. Then, you'll need to place it into the keyhole that shares its number with the Triangle button.

If you press and hold X while jumping on a trampoline, you'll keep gaining height on your jumps up to a certain point. Be careful at high heights, as you will drop like a stone and take fall damage if you fall from too high an elevation.

Gordian Knots will not only refill your health completely, but they will refill your magic. (More on that later.) Monkey Icons will refill your health completely and give you an extra life...and you're going to need as many lives as you can get.

There are points where you can break rock walls with Square to open up areas where you can find power-ups.

When you see the beehives, keep running and do not stop. Eventually, you will come to a point where the bees stop chasing you, and it is usually another beehive. If the bees hit you, it is instant death.

Pressing Down lets you duck. If you press Up, you'll stand back up. While crouched, use Left and Right to roll. This will get you across some narrow crawlspaces in this level.

By pressing X in mid-air, you can do a double jump.

Sometimes, if you grab a lone turnip, other power-ups will pop up around it. Be sure to explore the levels as best as you can to grab as many power-ups as you can.

By holding Circle, you can move the game camera around slightly with the Control Pad. Use this to look for platforms and to figure out where you need to go next.

You can move crates by moving into them.

Use Down at the top of a rope or vine to climb down. Use Up and Down to climb up and down ropes and vines. It should be noted that if you use the camera button while on a rope or vine, you will still move if you hold Up or Down, so be careful.

You'll eventually Subodye's School of Magic. Here, you'll have to fight three disciples in order to get entry to the school. The first is Beedy, who uses his martial arts. Get close to him and keep punching to defeat him while holding towards him, and use the double jump to avoid getting hit. Bidey will use nunchaku. Double jump over him as he attacks, then mash Square while holding forward when you're behind him. Bodey will attack with a staff. He is slow to swing, so get him to swing, then get near him after he attacks and hold forwards on the Control Pad while pressing Square. You'll soon have all three disciples beaten. Just enter the school, and the level is over.

When you complete a level, you'll see how well you did on items. Here, you'll just see how many turnips, Gordian Knots and monkey icons you collected, then you'll see what your rank is, which has no bearing on how the rest of the game will go. You'll then be able to save your game before going to the next level.
