Knightwing and Kwife play Teenage Mutant Turtles IV: Turtles In Time - Part 1 of 2

It's time to kick some shell once again as we upgrade to 16-bit!

The game was released with the word "Ninja" replaced with "Hero" in the title in typical over-reactive fashion in Europe. Meanwhile in Japan, the game was released without the Roman numeral "IV," as the third game was the second game, the second game was the first game, and the first game had a completely different title.

Shredder's forces have stolen the Statue of Liberty! The Turtles are the only ones who can get it back!

Scene 1

Big Apple, 3 AM

The controls are improved upon the second and third games. You can now dash and perform dash attacks, and you can also perform a special attack with the A button. It does use your energy if it connects, just so you know.

The purple and Salmon Foot Clan soldiers are your typical enemy fare. As long as you don't let them get too close, you should be good. Some of the blue ones will carry a wide variety of weapons, like swords, sai and axes. The white ones will carry nunchaku, which have some range to them.

The wrecking ball will do a lot of damage if it flattens you.

The blue box with the word "Pizza" on it is a full box of pizza that refills your health.

One of your most useful attacks will be the throw. When you perform it, you'll slam a Foot Clan soldier to and fro, and if any other enemies get in the way, they'll be whacked as well. To do it, get up close to a Foot Clan soldier and press Back+Y.

You can also throw the enemy into the screen as well. To do that, get up close and press Forward+Y.

The supersized Krang will shoot lasers out of his eyes. You don't want to be in front of him when he stops moving, as this is when he fires them.

The first boss is Baxter Stockman, who is in his mutant fly form in this game. Jump into the air and hit him as you avoid both his gunfire and the giant hand that comes out of gun. Press Y at the top of your jump for best results as well as at least one extra hit every time you try to attack him. He'll occasionally move across the ground, and you'll want to wail on him when this happens as he does absolutely nothing. It won't take long to finish off Baxter.

Scene 2

Alley Cat Blues

If you attack the fire hydrant near the beginning, one of the pipe covers will shoot out and fly to the right, attacking any Foot Soldiers in its path.

The orange Foot Clan soldiers can jump up and throw shurikens. The shurikens explode when they hit the ground.

When you reach the pizza box, you'll see four Roadkill Rodneys. Whack them a couple of times, but be ready to jump over the whip-like wires that come out of them and shock you, as well as the lasers they shoot out.

The maroon pizza box with the bomb on it is a spin attack that last for a few seconds. If you run into any enemies while you are spinning, you will instantly take them out.

Once again, the open manholes will cause damage if you fall into them.

The boss here is the robotic turtle Metalhead. Whack him a few times, and jump over the lasers he shoots when he runs to the right side of the screen. Avoid him as he jumps back to the left, then whack away at him. As long as use the range of your character's weapon to your advantage, his extending punch shouldn't even be an issue.

Scene 3

Sewer Surfin'

This is a bonus stage than anything else where you're careening down the sewers on a surfboard. Hit as many Foot Soldiers as you can and collect all the yellow pizza boxes with the blue question marks on them. Avoid the spikes that come down from the ceiling by moving to the right, as they fall shortly after they pass the center of the screen. Avoid the red spiked balls in the water by jumping over them. After the spikes are gone, hit as many pizza monsters as you can.

You'll then face Rat King. Attack the front of the ship, which shows the arrow featuring the words "Break Point" above it. Carefully position yourself between the missiles so you can get some shots in. When he moves backward, you should, too: Rat King's boat will shoot out red balls that grow spikes as soon as they land in the water.

Scene 4

Technodrome - Let's Kick Shell!

Don't worry, there's more to this, but at least the Technodrome shows up in this game much like it has in all the other ones so far.

You'll get a free life at 200 points.

The Mousers come back with a vengeance by leaping off a conveyor belt and through a window to take a bite out of you. Whack away at them and do not let them get close by any means.

The pink soldiers can throw shurikens at you from a distance and can also block your attacks.

After seeing the TV screens with Shredder on them, you'll meet Tokka and Rahzar. Tokka is a mutated turtle, while Rahzar is a mutated dog. They both fight the same way: they can punch at you and they can dash a limited distance forward. Tokka can also fire an ice beam at you that will freeze you in place.

Do not move into the force field blocking the door, intentionally or otherwise, as you will get fried.

Once you beat Tokka and Rahzar, you'll fight some more enemies on an elevator. There is a pizza on the elevator if you need it, and you probably will, as you'll meet Shredder at the end!

To beat Shredder, you'll have to throw the Foot Soldiers by getting really close to a Foot Soldier and pressing Forward+Y. This will send the soldier into the screen and right into Shredder. As you toss those Foot Soldiers around, avoid the claws that will be at either side of Shredder, and don't let that white target home move toward you and turn red, as this triggers the guns to fire at you.

After you throw enough Foot Clan soldiers into Shredder, Shredder will leap out of his machine and throw you into a timewarp!

Watch out for the eggs that the pterodactyls drop, as they're bombs. Jump over the velociraptor that runs to the other side of the screen so you don't get flattened.

The Stone Warriors cannot be tossed into the background with Forward+Y. They can also hit you with a shoulder tackle if you let them.

The yellow Soldiers will walk in, throw bombs at you, then leave the screen.

The boss here is the evil Ninja Turtle, Slash. Stay on the move and avoid his attacks. When he leaps to one side of the screen, that's your cue to hit him with all you've got. Stay near him as he jumps from one side to the other, and keep hitting him. If you need to, use jump kicks to keep up.
