There's not a lot of places to go to now that we're in the Middle Ages, so it's time to head to the castle and see what's going on regarding Queen Leene.
There's nowhere else to go except Guardia Forest, so let's head there.
If you press Select in the overworld, you can pull up the full world map, albeit a really blocky-looking world map. Press B to get out of it.
Aside from the clearing not being near the castle entrance, the layout of the forest is the same here as it is in the present day.
You'll face three new enemies here: Blue Eaglets that will love to divebomb and peck at you, Rolys that will roll and jump at you, and Roly Riders who will kick their steeds at you. You'll also meet the Green Imp, who isn't that much different from the Blue Imp.
You'll eventually make it to the castle.
When you make it here, the guards at the entrance will think you're one of Magus' soldiers. The queen will suddenly show up and demand they show you the proper respect, and after some reluctance, they do. From here, you're free to move about the castle...after a little bit of giggling from the Queen herself, which slightly hints that not all is as it seems
At the entry level, you can head west to rest in a bed and recover your HP and MP for free. You can also talk to the people here and find out what's going on with the war against the Mystics. If you head east, you'll be able to get a meal and recover your HP and MP that way, if you wish. You'll also find an Ether in the chest to the south where the cooking pots are.
Going north from the entrance will lead you to the throne room. If you talk to King Guardia XXI, he will thank you for helping them find Queen Leene before telling you about the rest area and the dining hall on the entry floor.
The man in brown is the chancellor, and if you talk to him, he will not react, and he will instead go up the stairs to the west and go all the way to the king's bedchambers. You can follow him up there and open the chest you see along the way for 100G, and if you talk to the maiden in the bedchamber, she will tell you that the chancellor is not acting even the slightest bit suspiciously and that he goes to the cathedral to the west every day.
If you talk to the chancellor as soon as you see him here, he will be slighted by you sneaking up on him. If you go around to the left end of the bedchamber and talk to him through the wall, however, you will hear him ask how the Queen escaped from behind held in a secured room before he leaves. This will only happen after you talk to the maiden in the bedchamber.
The eastern stairs behind the throne will lead to the Queen's bedchamber. (Now that I think about it, why seperate beds and why so far apart?) As you head to the Queen's bedchamber, you'll find a Tonic in a chest. Eventually, you'll be able to talk to a guard, who will tell you that the Queen is expecting you and allows you passage to the bedchamber. Talk to the Queen, and she will ask her attendants to allow the two of you to speak privately, which they do. The Queen will then tell you to come closer, and if you move towards her, she will giggle and reveal that she is Marle, not Queen Leene. She will thank you for coming for her before the room gets dark and she is suddenly violently ripped out of existence.
From here, head back towards the throne room. Lucca will show up and tell you why Marle suddenly looked familiar: Marle is actually Princess Nadia of Guardia. She also mentions that history has somehow been changed and that Queen Leene will be killed, but since we have appeared at a time before she was killed, we have a chance to make history right. If we don't, Queen Leene will die and Princess Nadia will cease to exist. Lucca will then mention that we need to find some clues, and the only thing that seems out of place, according to King Guardia XXI (assuming you've talked to him) is that Queen Leene was supposedly found without her lapel pin, which she always wears.
Leave the castle and head back through the forest. Be sure to get some experience for Lucca so that she can learn Flame Toss, which attacks enemies in a line with fire damage. With Flame Toss learned, you'll also be able to perform Fire Whirl with Crono and Marle, which combines Cyclone and Flame Toss for a more powerful version of Cyclone that also does fire damage.
Once you're out of the forest, the only place to go is the cathedral to the west.
