PrinceWatercress plays Secret Agent - Part 1 of 12

For my 300th Let's Play, I'm playing another game from when I was a kid that combined 2D platforming with a little bit of platforming in what seemed like vast, maze-like stages. Try and try again as you get through these stages without dying and you too can foil DVS' plans at world domination!

The world is in danger from the villainous agency known as DVS. They have blueprints for a satellite weapon known as "Red Rock Rover," and if it is allowed to be built, world peace is done for! It's up to you as Agent 006 to get through three islands, find the blueprints for the weapon on each one, and foil DVS' plans once and for all.

Episode 1: The Hunt For Red Rock Rover

The title is a pun on "The Hunt For Red October."

The Control Pad allows you to move around on the island map. Whenever you walk into a fort, you'll enter that level.

Area 1

Left and Right on the arrow keys let you move. Control lets you jump. Alt lets you shoot. Thankfully, you can enter the main menu with Escape while on the island map and either activate the joystick or reconfigure the keys. This menu also allows you to quit the game, save games and load games, too.

At the start, ride the platforms over the water. The sign saying "Don't Feed The Fish" acts as a platform. The water and the shark are both instant death, so don't fall into either.

Watch out for the rocket from the rocket launcher as you grab the S. Down and to the left is a thug.

There are five kinds of human enemies. By shooting at them, you'll keep powering them down until they are turned into lowly guards. Shooting them as guards will turn them into tombstones, which you can shoot for some points or grab for even more points. The five kinds of human enemies are:

  • Thugs (look like you, wear a black suit and carry a gun) - these are the strongest ones and can shoot at you if they see you.
  • Ninja Masters (all blue uniform, carrying a gun) - a step down from the thugs, they can still shoot at you
  • Ninja (all black uniform, carrying nunchaku) - the fastest of the enemies. Take them down if you see them! Thankfully, they can't shoot at you
  • Sentry (wears a red uniform, carries a staff) - a little faster than the guard, but not by much.
  • Guard (wars a white uniform, carries a knife) - super slow, super easy to kill. Shooting one turns them into a tombstone.

Take out the thug, then jump over the red and yellow light - which is a bomb that explodes open contact and instantly kills you - and get the red key. Use the crate to get up to the red door and get the blue key. Use the blue key on the blue door to get to the green key. From here, drop down, and get the blue disk as you do.

The mechanical dog just moves back and forth, and takes three hits to kill. Shoot it down, then grab the P and open the green door. Watch out for floor spikes that sink in and out as you make your way up to the computer. By moving into the computer with the disk in your possession, you can turn off the instant death defense lasers blocking your path further down. From the computer, you want to go left first and get the red key.

With the lasers off, go down and to the red door, and get the glasses. These X-Ray specs allow you to see hidden platforms. Use the hidden platforms to get to the blue key, then go back to the blue door and shoot down the satellite dish. If you need to, take out the flying mine with two bullets. You must shoot down the satellite dish before you end the level.

From here, make your way to the bottom, and watch out for the rocket from the rocket launcher to the left as you get the Y. By getting the S, the P and the Y in that order, you can get a 10,000 point bonus; otherwise, you get nothing. From here, continue right and get the dynamite. You'll need to take out the human enemies on the way, of course. The dynamite allows you to blow up the exit door and exit the level, assuming you've taken care of all the necessary business in that level. When you do this, step away from the dynamite so the explosion does not hurt you. Watch out for the bomb on the floor as well as the machine that flies around and occasionally stops to shoot lightning downwards.

If you complete a level without getting hit, you'll get a 25,000 point bonus. You can die and start your attempt at getting that bonus again and you can still get it, but there are no checkpoints in this game and there is no way to refill health, either...so you'll want to be careful as you play! Also, if you die, all your progress and item collection will be lost. Thankfully, there are infinite lives in this game, so enjoy the trial and error and remember that there is no such thing as a Game Over in this game.

Things such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, suitcases, money bags, radios, watches, magnifying glasses, teddy bears and computer chips just give you points.

Picking up bullets gives you five bullets for your gun. Always pick these up when you see them. If you don't have bullets, you can't fight enemies.

Keys - red, blue and green - open like-colored doors. You can only have one of any color key at any given time.

Area 5

This was the first level that I ever played when I played this game for the first time. I remember spending minutes on end seeing what everything did and what you could and couldn't do, and seeing how tough this game can be if you're not ready for what it's about to throw at you.

Make your way up and get whatever you can: bullets and points pick-ups. Save the letters for last. Watcho out for human enemies and the flames that slowly move back and forth. You'll need to make your way up to the upper-left corner of the level and then drop down. From here, you'll need to get the X-Ray specs, and if you want, grab the S.

The robot on the ground with the red and yellow "mouth" opens it visor on its top every so often. When that visor is up, shoot at the top of the enemy to damage the visor and get rid of it. If it sees you, it will fire a laser at you. As for the robot with the glass dome on its head near the teleporter, shoot it three times to defeat it. If it sees you, it will shoot at you.

The ceilings fans damage you, so don't jump into them.

By taking the teleporter, you'll make it to the satellite dish. Destroy it, then use the platforms from the X-Ray specs to get to the dynamite. If a cloud has a black outline at the bottom, you can stand on it. Get the P and the Y for the 10K bonus. From here, you'll need to head back to the exit and blow it up.

Area 4

The barrel with the red arrows on it is the push barrel. By moving into it, you can push it left and right to get to places you normally couldn't. If you push it into a wall, walk into it to get it in a position where you can move it again. Use the push barrel to take out the moving ceiling turret with three bullets. Remember that the ceiling turret only shoots the area in front of you, not directly from above. Keep that in mind when trying to pass through.

You'll be able to open both doors with the blue and green keys. Going to the right past the green door will take you to the computer, but you can't use it yet. Going further down while avoiding the bombs will allow you to go down and get the S. Taking the teleporter will take you to the disk. Take the disk, avoid walking into the nearby electric barrier while it's on and crackling, and get to the computer to turn off the laser field.

From here, you can go to where the blue door is. Going up will take you to a laser barrier. Shoot down the spinning blue thing under glass; passing by without doing so will cause a laser to fire out and keep you from moving on. Watch out for the bullets from the wall turret. Further to the right past a series of instant death spikes you can avoid with the moving platform is another blue door, but you'll need to go down from where the blue door that led into this area was to get the key for it. Get the key, then head back to that blue door and open it. Get the dynamite and the P, and shoot the satellite dish. From here, you can go further down to the bottom of the level. Watch out for the spikes that sink in and out of the floor and watch for the flying robot that stops to zap down every so often. Get the things you see as you go, including the Y, then blow up the door. You're done.

There are areas where you if stand in a specific place, a money bag will fall down from the sky. If you can grab it before it disappears, you'll get 5,000 points.
