Part nostalgia-bomb, part note-taking and part FAQ, what started in GameTrailers as a video game blog is now on Blogger. This blog is a look back at video games, both popular and obscure, from the video game industry's infancy all the way to the previous console generation.
Well, we've opened up a little bit of the game...time to solve some puzzles!
Back at Lefty's Bar, use the gum on the stray dog to put the gum on the bone the dog is chewing on and moisten up. To get the gum back, give the chew toy to the dog. You'll exchange it for the bone, which is now rainbow colored and sticky thanks to the now-moistened gum.
If you combine the bone with the now-extended rope, you'll create a makeshift fishing rod. From here, use it on the drain. You'll find a key inside. This key is used to open the jewelry box in Erin's room. Inside is a packing slip for Erin's package at the Leisure Suite.
If you haven't already, talk to Atticus and Everett at the counter at the Salon du Lezard. If you ask for a beer, you won't get one, but you'll be able to ask about the menu. If you ask for the gluten-free bread, you'll get some automatically. If you ask for a latte, you won't be able to get one because it is too expensive and because the soy milk used to make the latte has expired. Larry will get the expired soy milk from doing this.
Also at the Salon du Lezard, talk to Lemma Tallica again about the drummer and go through all the dialogue options concerning him. Lemma will tell you to talk to Atticus and Everett about the drummer, whose name is Stix LaBeum. Do that, and go through all the dialogue options concerning Stix. You'll find out he has a gray beard, wears a leather jacket, that he smokes, and that he had a huge fight with Lemma.
After you find out about the fight, you'll be able to talk to Lemma about it. Lemma will tell you that Stix thinks Lemma is selling her soul by performing at the Salon du Lezard and that Stix would rather hang out somewhere seedy where he can drink and gamble his life away.
When you leave the Salon du Lezard, click on the ashtray. You'll be able to take the pack of Camel Toe cigarettes, something you weren't able to do before.
At the Leisure Suit, give the packing slip to Bea Thuse. She won't be able to read the handwriting, so give her the lens from the VR goggles, then the packing slip. She will be able to read it now, and give you Erin's package as well as a pair of rubber gloves.
With these two items in hand, head back to Lefty's Bar. Talk to Lefty and ask if any drummer has been at the bar. After talking to Everett, Atticus and Lemma and going through all the dialogue options as well as grabbing the Camel Toe cigarettes from the Salon du Lezard ashtray, you'll be able to get all the dialogue options. Larry will tell you about Stix after you mention the alcohol and gambling issues. He will tell you that Stix is at Pier 69, and you'll unlock that location for the Unter app.
While you're still at Lefty's, Use the rubber gloves on the jukebox plug to reset the router without electrocuting yourself. You'll reset the Wi-Fi and Erin will be able to perform again, but she will tell you about the package at the Leisure Suite. She won't be able to get it because she can't get to the packing slip in her jewelry box, and she has lost the key to it. She was sure that she had the key when she left the bar. Thankfully, we just did all that, so you can give her the package...but then she tells you she never intended to be a camgirl, and that she moved to New Lost Wages to hit the big stage and become a real stripper. You'll have to help her with that, as well.
Head to Pier 69, indicated by the carousel on the Unter map. There is a poster wall where you can hang a poster for Lemma's concert. There is a fairgrounds area that you can go, and while there is a ship nearby, you won't be able to do anything with the porthole to get inside. There is also some flotsam near the ship, but you won't be able to do anything with it...yet.
There is a porthole. You'll be able to talk to Becky, who accuses Larry of putting something in her drink and trying to attack her. The guy next to her will tell you to stay away from Becky, and his name is Lance. You'll be able to talk to him and get to know him. He is a fitness trainer who works in the gym on the strip, and that Becky is just simply dating him.
At the fairgrounds, you'll meet Stix LaBeum as well as a man of Native American descent named Smokey Bear who is smoking an electronic peace pipe. He likes the pipe, and he will not give it to you as he needs it, the e-cigarette is all natural and he has never heard of them being harmful in any way. By continuing to talk to him, you will learn that he owns the oldest casino in New Los Wages, and he will say it is only a rumor that everyone loses simply because it was built on an old Native American cemetery.
Using the scroll wheel on the computer mouse that has one (yours does have one, right?) allows you to pull up the inventory straight away. Also, holding the Space Bar on the keyboard will cause pink map markers to show up on anything that you can interact with, anyone you can talk to and anywhere you can go in a given area. (Interestingly, the lo-res poster in Lefty's Bar has its own red, 8-bit style icon for this.)
Speaking of interesting mouse and keyboard commands, hold Control and press B on your keyboard to enter Boss Mode. For those of you born before the 1990s, Boss Mode was a way of hiding the fact that you were playing a game when you should have been working with a nifty keyboard shortcut, which would usually turn the screen black but would also mask the program to look like something else that was vaguely work-related (like a line graph or bar graph). If you've never done it before, do it and do it now: you'll get an achievement for it ("NSFW").
Interestingly, you can combine the shoelace with the gum, but you have to do a little extra before you can do that. The gum needs to be more moist, and the string needs to be longer. Hmmm....
When you have the soft toilet paper for Kyle or the trash bag for Finley and you happen to have both items, you'll give the other item to the respective person automatically. As promised, Finley and Kyle will help Larry set up his Timber account. You can choose between a few nicknames at the start, as well as your Timber tagline, but the rest of the dialogue options will give you the same outcome regardless of which option you pick. Once you get done, you'll be able to access the Timber app on the PiPhone and check out your new matches on Timber. Pi, the AI on the PiPhone, will tell you when you have new matches as you progress through the game's story, so be sure to check them out. Click the X if you don't like them, and click the heart if you do.
From here, leave Prune. You'll find out you have some new matches. Head to Larry's Bar. You'll meet a rabid dog outside.
At Lefty's Bar, you can interact with the record in the jukebox, but you'll need to find a way to cut the glass.
Now that you have Timber and you have new matches - one of them being Erin - you can go into the back room, go up the stairs, knock on the door and tell Erin that the both of you have matched on Timber. She'll let you into the spare bedroom. (You won't be able to enter the room before this point.) Erin and Larry will get to know each other (and you'll get a reference to "Ken sent me" from the first game), then Erin will ask you if you are an Internet technician before asking you to help get the Wi-Fi in Lefty's Bar back up and running so Erin can get back on the Internet. By talking to Erin, you'll find out that Erin is not only going for a literary major in college, but that she is a camgirl and that she does shows on the Internet. Erin will also tell you that the Wi-Fi router is somewhere in the bar and that Lefty should know what it is, and once you get the Internet up and running again, Erin will do a special show for you.
For now, grab the condom off the bed. Clicking on the gum, the wrecking ball and the phallic strawberry in the strawberry bush will give you some funny lines and dirty jokes. You can take the hedge clippers, but you won't be able to leave the room with them or do anything with them...yet. If you use the hedge clippers on the strawberry penis, you'll get another funny line out of Larry.
Head back to the bar and talk to Lefty, and ask him where the Internet is. He will ask if the router is causing trouble again, then you'll get a set of dialogue options. If you've looked at the jukebox and paid attention to it, you'll figure out that the jukebox doubles as an Internet router that also does Wi-Fi. Once you pick that, you'll figure out what you need to do (and get a joke from Pi about having to install numerous critical updates to the PiPhone). It's simple: unplugging the jukebox and plugging it back in. There's just one problem: the wire is exposed, and we've already shocked ourselves touching it, so we'll have to take an extra step to insulate ourselves.
If you've clicked on the jukebox at any point in the game so far, Lefty will tell you not to play the song as the song will shatter a glass eye. Remember that for later...
Now that you have matches on Timber, you now have a new place to go to on the Unter app: the strip. There are a few places you can go to, and on the far left is Salon du Lezard. You can take a vegan licorice roll for free, and you can combine that with the shoelace to create a longer rope.
There is a glass cabinet in the cage, but you won't be able to open yet. There is a turntable next to it, and you can move the gramophone horn, but you won't be able to do much else with the turntable.
There is a maca plant that you can take on the far left. You can take it, but you won't be able to take the cloth on the wall near it. This is the Shroud of Urine, which is a sheet Freddy Quicksilver, the lead singer of Queef, was buried in. (This is obviously a pair of references to Freddy Mercury and Queen, respectively.) You will be able to trade it in for a Poolaroid - the instant camera you've seen at Prune Headquarters - but you'll have to work to get it.
You'll be able to talk to a few people. First off is Lemma Tallica, who you've seen on the Timber app. You'll find out she likes having a good time after every performance and only uses Timber to get people to come to her concerts. You'll be able to spend some time with her after the gig, but you'll have to do two things for her: hang up posters around town and find her drummer, who has not shown up for soundcheck after heading to a bear on the beach. Larry will only be able to hang posters up...for now.
There are some places where you can hang the posters right now:
Salon du Lezard, next to the door leading out
Outside Lefty's Bar
Inside Lefty's Bar
The poster wall next to the right dome at the Prune Headquarters entrance
The moist wall in Lefty's bathroom (use the darts to hold it up)
The trash cans at Lefty's Bar (not an actual hang-up spot; use it to get the "Lazybones" achievement)
The back room at Lefty's Bar (not an actual hang-up spot; use it to uncover the now-dead pimp from the first game and get the gold tooth)
If you hang a poster on the trash cans outside of Lefty's Bar, you'll get an achievement ("Lazybones").
If you hang a poster on the back room wall , you'll uncover the pimp from the first game, who is now dead and in skeletal form after being walled-in. You can take his gold tooth.
The moist wall in Lefty's bathroom can be used for poster hanging, but you'll need to use the darts after putting the poster up to ensure it stays up.
The Leisure Suit at the strip is a sex shop. You'll meet Dick Ryder - who you've matched with on Timber - who will get your attention when you go in. Dick is ready to mingle with Larry, though Larry isn't aware of this at first. Dick Ryder wants to help you out by doing a photo shoot to give you a better photo for your Timber profile. You'll need to find a place to take some photos at first.
At the top of the shelf to the right of the doors leading back to the strip is a white dildo wearing a Where's Waldo?/Where's Wally? hat. If you click on it, you'll get an achievement ("Found Him!").
There is a Horny-Corn 4000 on the far right, and while you'll be able to take the head, you won't be able to leave with it...yet.
At the counter is Bea Thuse, the proprietor of the Leisure Suite...and she's hilarious. Be sure to talk to her, even though you won't have a lot of dialogue options.
You can put up a poster on the counter of the Leisure Suite, but Bea Thuse will stop you before you can do it. If you tell her it is an advertisement for a new sex toy, however, she'll let you put it up. From here, you can get some more dialogue options. Ask her if she has a really great sex machine in stock, and she will tell you about a jackhammer she once used as a sex toy but has since been worn down.
If you go to the back room, Bea Thuse will stop you again. At the dialogue prompt, pick the second option ("I bet back there is where all the really kinky perverted stuff happens!"). Bea Thuse will try to wave you off, but Pi will reveal that another store is in the back. You'll be able to go in and find out that she has run a QuikiMart on the side for years to keep the Leisure Suite from shutting down.
You won't be able to take anything from the PrunePal section of the store...yet. For now, you can interact with the slushee machine that is directly behind Larry when you enter and get a slushee, but if you leave it in your inventory for too long, it will melt and you will have to get another one. There is a way to counter this, however: combining it with the thermos in your inventory to keep it cool indefinitely.
To the right of the Leisure Suit is the gym. You won't be able to do much, but you can talk to and interact with a few items. You can take the chew toy away from the cute dog (the cute dog will cry afterwards), open the first aid kit to get some disinfecting wipes, and put a poster on teh wall between the door and the counter.
You can also talk to Ptheven, the guy at the gym counter, but you won't be able to do much.
You won't be able to take the bowling ball yet, and you also won't be able to go further into the gym until a little later in the game.
We head to Prune Headquarters and get a PiPhone that works as our in-game menu, and from here, we're off the rails and our adventure truly begins.
When you leave Lefty's Bar, you'll take an Unter ride to Prune Headquarters. Select all of the dialogue options that are available if you want, but if you ask the PiPhone to show Larry what has happened over the last few decades, you'll trigger the title sequence and you'll also get an achievement for it ("Don't Call It Time Travel"). At least Larry will know what a smartphone, much less a cellphone, is.
You'll be at Prune Headquarters, which looks very phallic. The name of the CEO, Bill Jobs aka "BJ," is also pretty phallic. You'll be going to BJ's office at the skyloft to return the PiPhone.
Before you go in, there is a red and black item to the left. Pick it up. It's a thermos. You'll need it later.
From here, talk to Kyle and Finley, who are nearby. As you talk to them, the PiPhone will be brought up. You'll learn that the PiPhone is really a top secret prototype, and Finley will hand you a single-use access card that will allow you to go to the skyloft. Just use it on the elevator and then select the skyloft to go up there.
When you go up there, you'll meet BJ and his assistant, Faith. Before you show up there, BJ will be angry that the PiPhone prototype has gone missing. From here, you can go through the dialogue as Larry hands the prototype back to BJ and Faith and also tries to ask Faith out on a date. Larry will also learn that BJ is the founder of Prune as well as the CEO, and learn that the PiPhone is a very versatile smartphone. Larry continues to be persistent about dating Faith, but Faith says she only hooks up with the dating app Timber, and that she does not accept any contacts with less than 90 points. From there, Faith hands Larry a voucher for a free PiPhone, and from there, Larry can install Timber and try to get points from there.
Larry will leave the skyloft. When you get control of Larry, use the voucher on Finley and Kyle to get your PiPhone. Larry will learn how the PiPhone works in the most basic sense as you go through the dialogue (and also get a reference to lootboxes), then Larry will ask for help with setting up the Timber profile. Finley and Kyle are happy to help, but Larry has to help them out first. Kyle wants super-soft toilet paper as Prune Incorporated has very cheap TP, while Kyle wants used women's panties, and tell Larry he has to do this to prove he is "a real player."
If you click on the VR boxes to the right of Kyle and Finley, you'll be able to take a pair of VR goggles. Sadly, the box will fall apart and you won't be able to replace or repair it, but you will be able to take the lens that has fallen out and keep it in your inventory. There are instant cameras to the right of the stack of VR goggles, but you won't be able to interact with them yet.
The PiPhone will replace the notebook in the lower-left corner, and you'll be able to get a few new options: Instacrap (which lets you replay cutscenes you've unlocked) and Unter (which lets you switch between locations assuming you're on the street where an orange Unter sign is present).
There's nothing more to do here, so leave Prune Headquarters through the glass door, use the Unter app and go to Lefty's. Don't worry about paying; you'll be able to go anywhere for free for the duration of the game. Re-enter Larry's Bar.
When you re-enter, you'll meet Erin, who mentions that the Internet is down as she talks to Lefty. When she leaves, you'll notice that Becky is gone and that a frayed plug is now available to interact with. If you grab it at this point in time, you'll be able to kill Larry and unlock an EGA-style cutscene where Larry is rebuilt for laughs. You can't die in this game, but you can still get "death scenes" as Easter eggs.
Head to the bathroom. Becky Butter will be in the stall, and if you talk to her, you'll find out that Becky is making a video on her PiPhone as she is puking and pooping in the toilet. She also accuses Larry of putting something in her drink, even though Larry was sick, too. If you ask for the toilet paper, Becky will ask for a pair of panties.
Head back to the bar and talk to Larry. Go through the dialogue. You'll learn a little more about Erin, and Larry will learn what the Internet is and that the PiPhone can access it. You can ask for a room, but you won't be able to get one due to Erin renting it at the moment. You'll also learn that the pipes are broken, and Lefty will give you the key to the back room. He'll tell you to fire up the brewing vat again by pulling the lever down, turning the valve and pushing the lever back up, but before you can do that, you'll have to fix a pipe. You'll also learn that the jukebox is really the Internet router.
Use the back room key on the pink back room door. When you use the key, it will break, but you'll have unlimited access to the room.
Grab the bottle of softener on the washing machine to the right, and click on the laundry basket to take a pair of panties. There isn't much else that you can do here, so head back to the bathroom and hand the panties to Becky. In exchange, you'll get an empty toilet roll. When you leave the bathroom, Lefty will tell you that the Barbarian Brew that you and Becky drank is getting whoever drinks it sick, and that there is a new shipment of toilet paper in the back room. Enter the back room ad open the box that wasn't there before by clicking on it, and take the toilet paper. If you combine the softener with the toilet paper, you'll make it much softer.
When you head back to the bar, Lefty will tell you that the toilet is now completely shot after everything Becky just put it through and that Becky doesn't want to see you again. Head back to the bathroom. The garbage can on the left will now be open, and the toilet will be filled to the brim with toilet paper. Click on the trash can and Larry will learn that Becky's used panties are there. Click on the red cord in the trash bag to close the bag, then click on the bag to put it in your inventory. You now have your soft toilet paper and used panties for Kyle and Finley.
By the way, there is an old, worn-out work shoe near the Unter sign outside of Lefty's Bar. If you click on it, Larry will take the shoelaces off of it and put them in his inventory.
It may not be as trailblazing as the classic games in the series, but it's not anything like Magna Cum Laude or Box Office Bust, either! Larry Laffer is back, and so is Saxcat20 - now known as The Gaming Corner - in this Day 1 (kinda) Let's Play!
It may not be the return to form that the Leisure Suit Larry fans want, but it is the ones that they need. This game came out in early November 2018, so this game is quite recent compared to the other games covered so far on this blog. For those wondering, Al Lowe is not involved whatsoever, and the game is developed by a German indie company known as Crazy Bunch Games.
When you start the game, you can skip straight to the action by pressing the red circle with the arrow in the upper-right corner, or you can answer the age gate questions, which are there just as a reference to the classic Leisure Suit Larry games. If you answer four questions in a row correctly, however, you'll get an achievement for it ("Old School"). Don't feel bad if you have to look them up.
By starting the game for the very first time, you'll also get an achievement ("You Want It Too"). As of the time of the game's release, the game is available on Steam and GOG for $29.99. Don't worry, it's worth that 30 bucks, and you're going to find out why.
The game begins somewhere in what looks like Mexico, where a guy playing a guitar says that the time has come and that "he" has awakened after a long time after being forgotten (with many saying that this is a good thing), that the Chosen One from the Prophecy lives and that the alpacas will bow before him. Nothing will be the same. The game then zooms in on the picture on the wall, which shows two alpacas bowing down in front of a person with a white leisure suit.
We then end up in a dark room, where a man wakes up only to find out he is somewhere dark and unfamiliar. He climbs out of a conveyor belt and ends up in a place lit up only by a dim green light...but we need more light to see where he is.
From here, you have control of Larry. You can move your cursor onto things, and if there is a name for it in the bottom center of the screen - as well as a pink circle with a hand and what looks like a key inside of it near your cursor - you can interact with it. Also, the in-game menu acts a little differently; instead of going to the top of the screen, you have to move the cursor to the lower-right corner of the screen to get a notepad to come up. There are only two options: the main menu (signified by the house) and your inventory (signified by the box), though you have no items yet.
There is a red button to the left with a green circle above it. Click on the button to get a little more light. From here, you will uncover a roll-up chalkboard. Click on the chalkboard to roll it up and reveal a fuse box. Click on the fuse box to light up the room just a little bit more. You'll see some stuff on the wall, such as a Post-It Note that reads "1987" as well as a diagram of a person. From there, click on the button again, and you'll trigger the elevator. Click on the elevator to go up from...wherever this is.
If it isn't evident by now, this is the conveyor belt where Larry was rebuilt after a couple of death scenes in the first Leisure Suit Larry games. This should tell you something...
You'll then end up on the streets of Lost Wages - the setting of the first game - and in front of Lefty's Bar. At least that area is still there. You might as well go in, since there's not much else to do and you can't go back down due to the elevator running out of power.
Inside Lefty's Bar, Larry will meet a young woman at the left side of the bar talking on a cellphone. When he talks to her, the woman - whose name is Becky Butter - talks about what she has heard about Lefty's on the Internet in very 2018-ish slang. While the player may understand what she is talking about, Larry does not. From here, you can respond to her by clicking on a dialogue option when the game presents them on the bottom of the screen. This is how you will be talking to people throughout the game. There are no wrong answers for the two dialogue options you get here. As you listen to Becky talk, she will mention some fake social media platforms that are obvious parodies of real-life social media platforms as well as some more 2010s hipster slang.
From here, you have control of Larry again. You can continue to talk to Becky Butter from here. Be sure to go through all the dialogue options one by one.
While you're here, talk to Lefty. He mentions that Larry has not been seen in some time, and that people have heard that Larry has either died, entered a monastery or retired to an exotic island somewhere. Larry will have no memory of what has happened to him prior to the start of the game, and Lefty tells him it isn't the 20th century anymore. Larry is surprised by this news at first, but he eventually takes it in stride.
When you get control of Larry again, go through all the dialogue options. Larry will learn that Lost Wages and that this is New Lost Wages. You'll want to do this, not only to get two beers for your inventory, but to also get some reference to things such as Candy Crush, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, Tide Pod eating as well as an achievement ("Stay A While And Listen"). Lefty also makes reference of the fact that Larry sticks the beers in his jacket - as he will with every item in the game - as a slight joke.
When you have the two beers, give them to Becky. Becky will take pictures of the beer and film a video story about the beers, all while Larry has a look of disgust as he has no idea what is going or what Becky is even talking about half the time before finally having a drink 20-odd minutes later. They enjoy the drink, but Larry feels sick. Talk to Lefty and ask for the bathroom key, and use the key on the bathroom door to the left. To do that, go to the inventory on the lower-right corner in the notebook, then click on the bathroom key, which is tied to a brick. You'll be able to enter the bathroom, but the key will break off afterwards.
When you enter the bathroom, you'll get an Instacrap story where Larry is puking in the toilet when he notices a pile of green crud on a rat vibrating and making vibrating noises. Larry won't be able to touch it, and you won't be able to leave the room until you investigate it, either.
There are some things you can take: the dollar and change on the table, the toilet paper next to the toilet, the patch on the side of the stall, and the broomstick between the sink and the moist poster wall (which walls off the bathroom from the first game, which is now flooded out). From here, you'll have to use some items to remove the crud and see what is underneath. You could use the toilet paper, but Larry does not want to touch it that way as his hands will still come into contact with the crud. You'll have to combine the toiler paper with the broomstick to create an improvised toilet brush and use it to clean off the crud to reveal a cellphone, which Larry calls a "glowing box" as he has never seen a cellphone before. To combine the broom handle and the toilet paper, click on one of the two objects in the inventory, then go back into the inventory and click on the other item to combine them and get a new item. You won't be able to combine everything, but there are some things that you can combine, so this won't be the last time you'll be doing it.
The cellphone activates when Larry checks it out, and from here, you can go through the dialogue with any options you like when the operation system decides to have a mind of its own upon noticing it is in unfamiliar territory. You'll find out that the phone is called a PiPhone (an obvious iPhone reference), and that the AI program talking to you wants you to return it to Prune Headquarters. An Unter vehicle (a reference to Uber) will be outside of Lefty's Bar.
There is an old coin machine in the bathroom, but you won't be able to use it yet.
Back at the main bar area, there is a low-res poster of a pixelated naked woman on the wall that is a reference to the classic games. You can also take the darts on the dartboard as well as the dried gum near the right stool.
You can also talk to Becky again and go through all of the dialogue options. Be sure to do that before leaving the bar, if you wish.
Here's the best equipment in the game. Good luck getting these.
This video shows off the ultimate equipment in the game: the Adamant Armor. It stops a lot of status condition and blocks fire, ice and bolt. It is supposed to have a weight of 10, but due to a bug, it gives the user 99% evade.
The Artemis Bow is a 1 in 64 drop from a Moon Goddess, and is the most powerful bow in the game for Rosa.
The Crystal Rings are the best arm equipment, and the chances of getting it off a Red Dragon are 1 in 64.
The Ribbons are the best headgear in the game, having the ability to stop many status ailments and the most magic defense of all the headgear, and are a 1 in 64 drop from Toad Witches and Dark Wizards.
Judging by the battles in this video, having the ultimate equipment really helps a lot if you can get your hands on it.
Since HCBailly's Part 69 was deleted due to copyright stuff, I have another video from Retroberra playing a reproduction on an American Super Nintendo in its place. Fun starts at 41:10.
The moon will be revealed to have left the solar system.
Cecil and Rosa finally marry and become the new rulers of Baron. Cecil swears that he heard his brother Golbez tell him goodbye before the wedding. Everybody shows up to see Cecil and Rosa exchange vows.
