Jerry Martin plays Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People - Part 13 of 53

It's now time for Episode Two!

Episode 2: Strong Badia the Free

The episode starts with Strong Bad answering an e-mail asking what the dumbest law that The King of Town ever passed was followed by asking if Strong Bad could make a better ruler than the King of Town. Strong Bad says he could be a better ruler, but then asks who would want to hold that position. He also says that The King of Town is mostly harmless and is mostly out of his way. Suddenly, The King of Town shows up and demands one Creamy Ding snack cake for every e-mail sent or received as part of his new e-mail tax, and when Strong Bad starts asking what is going on, The King of Town sicks the Poopsmith - now carrying a bat and riot shield - on him before placing him under house arrest and fitted with a collar of obedience, which is technologically connected to an invisible fence outside the front door. Should Strong Bad escape through the door, the collar will explode and blow his head off. The King of Town also eats Strong Bad's map to ensure that he stays put until he can pay up. From here, Strong Bad must find a way to get out of his house without getting exploded and give The King of Town what for. From here, you have control.

Head to Strong Sad's room and talk to Strong Sad. Ask him what the best way to destroy an invisible fence. Strong Sad will tell you to short out the transformer, then suddenly questions why he's asking this question. If you ask him again, he refuses to help you further. (You'll need to ask about the invisible fence before escaping the house, or else you can't get 100% in this episode.) From here, head east and go to the shower to examine it. Strong Bad will notice how clean it is. (You must also do this before escaping the house, or else you won't get 100% in this episode.) Take the towel on the towel rack; you're going to need it.

If you go into the kitchen and examine the Cheat Commandos-O's box, you'll find the eye patch for the photo booth.

Head to Strong Bad's bedroom and get the crown from Blubbo-O's. You're also going to need this. Also, take the metal detector. You'll need this, too. If you click on the table, Strong Bad will mention using the last piece of paper making the drawing of The King of Town and declares that the next issue of Teen Girl Squad will have to wait.

If you go to the laundry room and examine the dryer, you'll find the camo pants for the photo booth. Also, take the pillow. You'll need it soon. From here, go right to the couch and take the stuffing.

If you use the pillow on Strong Sad, you'll get a funny bit of dialogue. (You'll need to do this before escaping the house, or else you won't be able to get 100% in this episode.)

If you look out the window in the computer room, you'll see the rest of the cast of characters in the series together for a peaceful protest rally led by Marzipan, much to Strong Bad's chagrin (even through everyone is on Strong Bad's side in this case). From here, use the towel on the King of Town effigy outside. Strong Bad will toss the red towel onto the effigy, and The Cheat will straighten it up. From here, use the crown of the effigy. The Cheat will set it up as well. Then , use the couch stuffing on the effigy, and The Cheat will make it the effigy's beard. Finally, use the pillow on the effigy, and the effigy will be complete. When The Cheat lights the effigy on fire, the invisible fence also gets immolated, and with it, the collar of obedience. Strong Bad will finally be free.

From here, the gang will be at Strong Badia. Strong Bad tells everyone that they must reject The King of Town's authority and declares that Strong Badia is its own independent nation before declaring war on The King of Town. Unfortunately, everyone else leaves after this, leaving Strong Bad on his own.

OUTFITS:
NEW! Eye Patch: Inside cereal box in kitchen
NEW! Camo Pants: Inside dryer

CALLING STRONG SAD NAMES:
NEW! Talk to Strong Sad (Before escaping)
NEW! Talk to Strong Sad about fence twice (Before escaping)
NEW! Examine Shower (Before escaping)
NEW! Use Pillow on Strong Sad (Before using on statue)

plasticallan plays Jerry Boy - Part 7 of 7

Here it is: the final battle.

Stage 8-B

This one is more of a maze than anything else.

When you make it to the final room, you'll face the wizard. He'll fly back and forth and create clones of himself down below where you're at. Hit the clones to get a ball, and hit the wizard with the ball. Four hits will finish his first form off.

For his second form, he'll summon a ghost that spits fire. Dodge the fire. After he does this twice, he'll come down to your level, and you'll be able to hit him from there. If you're good enough, though, you'll be able to hit him while's he above you and doing the whole attacking them. Two more hits will finally do him in.

When you beat the wizard, you'll get your human form back as well as the princess! Well done!

J: As soon as you drop down, climb the ceiling to your left, go through the pipe and enter the pipe directly to the right when you come out. This takes you to the J.

E: Now go back up that pipe and go down the one to the far left. This will take you to the E.

R: When you make it to the door of the first section, you'll get the first R on the other side.

R: As you continue through the second section of this stage, you'll see the second R at the start of the maze segment.;

Y: At the end of the maze, you'll get the Y. You now have all the letters in the game! Your reward is obviously nothing, but hey, at least you know where they all are now.

plasticallan plays Jerry Boy - Part 6 of 7

It's time to storm the castle and set everything straight!

Stage 8-A

Oh, wow. The music is really good here.

Anyway, you'll be climbing ceilings to avoid guillotines and moving over spears that jut in and out of floors and ceilings.

The soldiers will jab at you with spears, since they know you're here and I'm guessing they don't know it's you. Or they just don't care. I'm going with the former.

Also, there's a guy spinning around with a heavy ball in his hands and a chef that tries to kill you with butcher knives and spatulas. The heavy ball guy is indestructible, so you'll have to wait for him to move around to get to where you want to go. For the chef, watch out for the spatulas, as they move in a zig-zag pattern compared to the straight line his knives fly in.

To get past the narrow ceiling at the beginning of the section, you'll have to quickly alternate between down and forward on the control pad while standing next to the wall. If you do it right, you'll slip through to the other side.

For the segment with all the blocks in the area, you can move past the darker ones. They're just part of the backgrounds. The lighter ones are the actual obstacles.

Leap into the stained glass windows to end the level. You'll fight a boss here, which happens to be Tom as a blob. He's pink and much bigger than you, and he'll try to swallow you and spit you into the spikes in the walls. Stay away from him and hit him six times. If Slime Tom does swallow, keep using your regular attack to pile on the damage!

J, E: You'll see these in plain sight as you make your way to the first pipeline in the stage.

R: The first R is at the very beginning of the second section.

R: Before going up that narrow gap with the seed, go all the way to the right after the first R and avoid the spears as you do. You'll find the second R. (Thanks to Snow Dragon's FAQ for finding this one.)

Y: When you make it out of the maze segment at the end, you'll see the Y.

plasticallan plays Jerry Boy - Part 5 of 7

We head up the mountain as he get closer and closer to Tom's lair...

Stage 7-A

In this stage, you'll be climbing up a mountain and going against the current with waterfalls and streams. That's it, really.

Watch out with the log bridge at the beginning, as the segments fall when you stand on them.

The kids floating up on the balloons act as platforms. If you knock the kids off with your regular attack, the balloon will travel faster.

J: You'll see it right after the start.

E: Jump on the balloon of the first balloon kid in the stage. He'll be near the E at his highest point.

R: The second balloon kid will take you to the first R.

R: Oh, plasticallan, you should have explored the rest of the level. If you had just dropped down just at the end and taken the middle tube, you would have gotten the second R that we all saw earlier in the video. (Thanks to Snow Dragon's FAQ for finding this one.)

Y: It's at the end, just after the first R.

Stage 7 Town

Oh, wow. Apparently the castle in Stage 8 is Tom's lair. Yep, your brother got rid of you so he could have the kingdom for himself.

Enter the log cabin and you'll also find out that Tom is going to marry Emi. Yeah, thanks, brethren. Also, the old man that gives you 1-Ups will be here, and he'll give you another 1-Up.

Stage 7-B

Now you're going down the mountain.

The red dragons shoot three fireballs out when they open their mouths, so use a ball to kill them if you need to.

When you reach the maze with all those big down arrows, go right at the beginning. You'll find a Health Up on the other side of that pipe.

The boss here is a fish. Hit him four times, then avoid the bones that he sends at you until he self-destructs. The 1-Up will come down the waterfall.

J: Keep to the right side of the level on the way down, so you can get the J.

E: After you see the crabs, go into the door and get the 1-Up. Exit the room through the door on the right, drop down, and you'll see the E.

R: You'll see the first R in plain sight right after the E. Use the Seed to the left of the R to get it.

R: Go down the tube in the ground that you see shortly after the first R to get the second R. (Thanks to Snow Dragon's FAQ for finding this one.)

Y: Use the seed in that room to go up just before the waterfall. You'll find some platforms. Near the crab is the Y.

plasticallan plays Jerry Boy - Part 4 of 7

Once again, we see human beings in an arctic-like area that are lacking in clothing.

Stage 6-A

You'll be seeing penguins everywhere. Some just run around, while others slide down slopes.

The pirate in the second room is naked. THE PIRATE IN THE SECOND ROOM IS NAKED.

HOW IN GOD'S NAME WAS THIS ALLOWED TO GO UNCENSORED?!? MY MIND IS BLOWN!

Anyway, there are penguins here that just move around and OH DEAR GOD THAT MAN IS RUNNING INTO A WALL IN HIS UNDERWEAR WHAT THE FUCK.

The ice blocks melt when you stand on them.

The seed allows you plant a seed on the ground and make a vine platform to reach areas that were once unreachable.

When you reach the tiny tower made of ice, enter the lower door first. At the very top is a 1-Up.

J: It's right at the beginning.

E: Once you enter the door, you'll see the E in plain sight.

R: After the guy in his underwear who runs into the wall, go up the series of platforms to reach the first R.

R: Before you enter the door to the third section, go into the water and go to the right. You'll find the second R.

Y: You'll see the Y at the very end of the stage.

Stage 6 Town

The house between the dog and the seal contains the old man, who has another 1-Up for you. He also asks you if you've been to the cavern yet.

You'll also learn that there is a monster in that cavern...or so the townspeople think.

Stage 6-B

Well, this one is substantially less quirky.

The sky-blue blocks with the white trim melt when you stand on them.

The flower above the first bomb enemy contains a 1-Up. Watch out when you get near the bomb enemies, as they will light up and run faster when you get too close in front of them. Also, you can see the fuse get shorter when it lights up.

There are enemies in parts of the level that have blue striped walls. You can tell they're there because of the light bouncing off of them. Fortunately, they just move around slowly and are easy to hit.

You'll definitely have noticed this earlier in the game, but when two flame enemies walk into each other, they create one big flame that only lasts for two seconds. It's like the developers almost thought of everything.

The boss here is a polar bear that floats around (I don't even comprehend how) and throws ice blocks. He'll stop floating every so often to run back and forth on one of the platforms, but he dies after six hits. Just be careful not to fall into the pit below.

J, E, R: You'll see these as you make your way through the level, don't worry.

R: After the segment with the blue striped wall, jump up and left to the floor above it to find the second R.

Y: After the blue striped wall segment, eschew the two doors and take the right-most pipe. You'll find the Y.

plasticallan plays Jerry Boy - Part 3 of 7

Welcome back to the section of the game where I instantly picture Booker T saying "OH MAH GOODNESS."

Stage 4-A

This one's just really easy. You just keep going right, get a 1-Up, and then go down a pipe.

DAT MODE 7

Okay, now that I've looked at this again, I'm now wondering why there are rabbits on the moon. I know Sony Music and Epic Records were involved in this game at the outset, but what the crap? Why are there rabbits on the moon?

Anyway, the blue-tinted rabbits just jump, but the pink-tinted rabbits jump higher. The first one you see will take you to the seemingly unreachable platform with the flower on it. As expected, it's a 1-Up.

Don't worry about getting the letters here, because there aren't any.

Stage 4-B

Get the iron ball here, you'll need it. You'll also get a health extension and a 1-Up here. They respawn if and when you die, so if you get a Game Over in this stage, you have only yourself to blame.

The boss here is really easy. He shoots five fireballs at a time, and after you hit him four times, he'll start moving around as he does it. He'll also start shooting parts of his body at you...didn't see that last time.

Hit him four times with the iron ball in total and you're done.

Easiest stage ever.

Also, no letters again, because what you see here is what you get. Apparently all the bosses give you 1-Ups when you beat them.

Stage 4 Town

Well, there's a town here after all. Well, at least we have an explanation of how we got from the Moon back down to Earth in the Japanese version: we literally came down from Heaven. Speaking of coming down, you'll have to go in that direction to see the rest of the Angel Village.

Also, the building that looks like a temple is a temple. The girl you see at the beginning tells you that this is a shrine of God. (Another religous reference? Wow, we really missed out on the good stuff when the game hit the States as Smart Ball.) Unfortunately, you won't be able to talk to him because he's away. (I'm pretty sure somebody in America would be offended by that somehow.)

You'll meet the Old Man on the way down again. Apparently, he's in every stage, and every time you see him, talk to him. He hands you a 1-Up. Who is this old man? Does he know who we really are? Does he actually know what's happening?

You'll also learn about a wizard who escaped from jail in the Angel Village and is now travelling underground. The wizard who put the spell on us, perhaps...?

Stage 5-A

This one is pretty simple-looking. It's basically in the ocean, so you'll be dealing with all of the stereotypical ocean enemies - fish, sea urchins, crabs and the like.

You'll eventually be going through a castle, entering doors and going through pipes. There's an iron ball near the end of the pipe maze. Use it to get rid of some of the enemies in the next room.

J: You'll see it right after the beginning.

E: You'll see it right before the door after the beginning.

R: The first R is in the upmost door of the left side of the first castle.

R: The second R is in the upmost door of the right side of the first castle. You'll have to go down the second castle and enter the bottom door to go underneath the bridge and access it.

Y: Once you make it out of the castle area, throw a ball at the urchin on the floor. You'll take it out and reveal the letter Y.

Stage 5 Town

Well, now we know why there wasn't a whale the first time: it was taken out along with the towns because it's part of the storyline. Go inside the mouth and you'll find an old man who tells you he's been in this whale for 10 years.

There's water in the entirety of the whale's mouth. How could you possibly be in that whale for ten years, old man. Turns out, the whale got both him and his wife, and you can reach the wife by going through what looks like the intestines of the whale. The old woman is okay, but they're now separated. Too bad there's nothing you can do about it.

That is just depressing.

Once you leave through the blowhole, you're out of the whale. I'm guessing the whale takes you somewhere while you're inside, kinda like Whamon during the Dark Masters saga of Digimon Adventure.

Stage 5-B

There are several ways to get through this level. For the first section, you can go throught the water or over the clouds. The clouds are far easier, since the fish that leap up and down off the surface of the water make it easier to stay above the ocean.

Oh, man, so much stuff that was missed last time. For instance, the sharks that move back and forth are revealed to be made of cardboard and run on a motor when they move to the right. That's hilarious!

The eels move up and down, but thankfully you can hit them with your regular attack.

The moving lines you'll see are the currents. See which direction they're moving so you can see which direction they'll take you.

Anyway, the boss here is a fat penguin. He just walks around and spits fish at you every few seconds. Once again, easy. All you have to do is just hit him, walk into him when he's flashing, and just keep pressing Y until he's dead.

J: Go in the water at the beginning and let the current take you down. You'll find the J here. (Thanks to Snow Dragon's FAQ for finding this one.)

E: The E is at the door at the end of the first section.

R: The first R is at the end of the room.

R: After the first R, dip down and to the left. You'll eventually find the second R. (Thanks to Snow Dragon's FAQ for finding this one.)

Y: The Y appears right before the boss.

plasticallan plays Jerry Boy - Part 2 of 7

This time around, we get to see a lot more of the areas than we did last time.

Stage 3-A

The jump power-up allows you to jump higher. You have to get rid of it in order to pick up items, though.

There are tons of new enemies here: a sand worm that chases after you, cacti with eyes at the top that move up and down in the sand, scarabs that jump in and out of the ground, and quicksand.

You'll also find hidden passages in the sand, and they're similar to the pipes in Stage 2-A.

J: Before you go up that hill shortly after the beginning, enter the little nook that goes under thr ground. You'll find the J.

E: When you exit the room that you find above the starting point, you'll instantly see the E when you come out.

R: When that worm comes after you past the E, jump over him with the Jump ball so you can enter the secret passage in the ground. Keep going left and you'll find a door, which leads you to the first R. This seemingly takes you back to the room before the E, but there's a 1-up underneath the exit. Nice.

Interesting thing about this door, though: it takes you to a room with a kid inside, and if you talk to him, he'll ask you to take him back home. This will automatically clear the level, so you'll have to go back to get all the letters. This also takes you to the town stage, and if you follow him home and talk to the kid and then the mom, you'll get a 1-Up! Score. You may have seen this in the American version and tried to do something here only to not be able to do anything. This is because of the whole towns thing and everything, so this applies only to the Japanese version.

R: Go back to the worm shortly after the E. Believe it or not, he can take you over the lava. Do that, and you'll find the second R after entering the door on the right. (Thanks to Snow Dragon's FAQ for finding this one.)

Y: Keep going until you reach the top of a hill. Make a running jump off of it to the right and you'll land on a cloud. Jump to the right to hit a wall. Go down, avoid the flames and enter the door to the right. Go in the top door, then avoid the red mice and get the Y at the bottom. (Thanks to Snow Dragon's FAQ for finding this one.)

Stage 3 Town

Here, you'll learn about the village in the sky as well as a rocket that can take you there.

There is a house with an old man. Talk to him to receive a 1-Up.

The camel in this town talks. Just thought you'd like to know. He just tells you it's hot outside, but still...

Stage 3-B

It starts getting dark in the beginning of the stage, and the moon comes out. Yeah, there's your explanation for the screen getting slightly dark in the beginning of the stage. It's the game.

Get the Jump power-up at the beginning of the stage. It'll be really helpful in the room with the lava, since you'll need it to stick to the ceiling.

The H.Up is "health up." It's a clear heart, and if you pick it up, your maximum health increases by one.

If you take the right door after getting the second R, get to the flower above the exit to this room to find a 1-Up. Oh, and the exit takes you to the Y, too, so you know it's the correct path.

The boss is extremely easy. Hit the boss in the chest area with four balls and you're done. You can do it as soon as he hits the ground, and you won't have to deal with any of his attacks, which involve walking back and forth while shooting lasers at the ground with the left hand. There you go. You'll get on a rocket and go to the moon.

If you want to, you can get behind it and hit in in the chest from there with regular balls.

J: From the beginning of this stage, go all the way down and go left. Enter the door and you'll find the J.

E: From here, you can go all the way to the right from the bottom, take out the cockroaches, and take the path in the floor to get to the E much more easily. Of course, you can reach it by playing normally, but the path in the ground does help.

R: The door next to the E is your path to the rest of the level. When you get past the moving column, you'll find the first R in plain sight.

R: Continue as normal, then go down, go right into the ground and keep going right. You'll find the second R in this underground chamber.

Y: If you take the right door after getting the second R, get to the flower above the exit to this room to find a 1-Up. Oh, and the exit takes you to the Y, too, so you know it's the correct path. (Yeah, I know I copied and pasted this. But hey, you want three lives? You'll get three lives!)

plasticallan plays Jerry Boy - Part 1 of 7

Wait...Epic and Sony Records released a video game? Well, Toshiba EMI was involved in Dance Dance Revolution to an extent in terms of the series soundtrack, but...this isn't a rhythm game.

Anyway, here's the intro.

Now for the game. This time around, you're in for more of a treat as this is more or less going to be the definitive version. We find almost all the letters, show off the towns and see the game as it was originally made...and probably intended to be released in America if it weren't for that relationship between Nintendo and Sony being strained in the mid-1990s (or so the story goes).

Basically, Jerry and Emi run the country and Jerry's jealous brother Tom (who is probably second in line to the throne) gets tempted by an evil wizard and Jerry turns into this blue blob.

But you probably already knew that.

Stage 1-A

You can stick to walls by holding the Y button.

The little signs with the letters spell out the word "Jerry," and they serve as checkpoints in case you die. If you hit all five checkpoints in a level, you'll get two extra lives.

Collect the balls to get ammo to shoot at the bad guys from a short distance. Of course, you can also attack enemies by either pressing yourself on the ground or moving your body upwards (you'll have to watch this to see what I'm getting at with the latter).

Stand on the flowers to get them to bloom. The power-ups in them will allow you to either refill your health, get extra lives, or get balls to arm yourself against enemies.

It should be noted that when you let go of the Y button and stop running, you'll be a darker color. If you're sticking to a wall when you do this, you'll slowly drift down. Keep this in mind, since it can help you inch downwards when you need to.

You can stand on enemies, which will come in handy a few times throughout the game.

There's a 1-up above the start. Thankfully, you can use the treetops to reach the cloud platforms.

J: In plain sight.

E: In plain sight.

R: Not in plain sight. Take the first tree platform and ride it to the top, then jump onto the cloud platform to the right to get the first R.

R: In plain sight, assuming you're still taking the ground level road here.

Y: Near the end, at the bottom-right corner of the level.

Stage 1 Town

Unlike the crapped-on American version where the towns were taken out and therefore the meat of the story, there's a town after Stage 1-A. You'll find out that Jerry has "gone missing," even though he's the blue jelly bean we're playing as for the entire game.

The yellow ball with the word "1-Up" on it is an extra life. You'll see these every so often. Speaking of which, the only house in the town that has an open door has a 1-Up if you want one. Just go in and grab it.

You'll find out that a giant monster is attacking the town.

Stage 1-B

This is where the enemies start to get slightly interesting. You have phoenixes that drop flames at you from above. You'll also see the rock enemies that start moving when you get close quite a bit in the game, too.

The bird boss is pretty easy. Hit him as he's coming toward you, and take advantage of the brief time when they blink after you hit them - you won't be able to hit them again until it stops, but they can't hit you by touching you, either.

Apparently the bird drops a 1-Up after you beat him. This never happened in the American version...

J, E, R, R, Y: All five letters are in plain sight and in order on this stage. There's really not much to this stage at all.

Stage 2-A

The music really starts getting good here.

You can go through the pipes in the sewers rather easily.

The cockroaches in the sewers won't be beatable until they get off the wall and get bigger.

You'll also start seeing spikes here. If you hit them, it's instant death.

Here's a new one: the pipes on the wall act as platforms that you can jump off of, but you have to be quick in jumping again or else you'll fall off of them.

There's also a lot of stuff that wasn't noticeable here in the last go-around here on the PrinceWatercress Blog. For starters, there are blue mice with their rear end on fire, which they can put out by jumping in water. Of course, they'll be jumping around while they're in it, going for the nearest platform. The tiny flame enemies will also be extinguished in the water if they fall in.

J: Go down the pipe you see at the beginning of the level. You'll find the J here.

E: When you get out of the sewers after taking the J, take the right-most pipe. You'll see the E when you re-enter the sewers.

R: There are two rooms after that door in the sewers that look exactly the same...with one minor difference in the second room. Climb up the wall above the exit out of the second room to get the first R. (There's nothing up there in the first room.)

R: In the next room, go into the water, go all the way to the left and go up the pipe to find a door. The second R will be in this next room.

Y: To the right of the platforms with the spikes at the bottom is a door. Go in, enter the next door and you'll see the Y in plain sight.

Stage 2 Town

You'll find out that Princess Emi has come through here. If you keep going right, you'll see that she's here and in a car, but her driver takes off before you can do anything.

Stage 2-B

The iron ball works much like the regular ball, except it slows you down tremendously and you can't jump very high. The fact that it doesn't go very far means you can use it against the boss.

The boss is a group of 12 birds. They fly around and create a rectangular formation, and teh spaces between this look like fish. Speaking of fish, that's exactly what come out of those spaces...fish with legs. Take down the birds with the iron ball, and take out any fish that manage to pop up. The birds will seperate and join together every so often, but that's pretty much all they can do.

Don't worry about taking out the top row, just work on the middle and bottom rows.

J: Go down the second lava pit to find the J.

E: You'll have to take a ride on the bird to make it across the spike pit, and then cross the logs going down the waterfall in the background to get the E.

R: In the third section, get the Seed, then go back to the left and set it down at the bottom of the spike-laden walls that you can't climp up. The seed will grow a vine, which will give you easy access to the first R...and an 1-Up!

R: After that first R, the second one will be in plain sight very shortly afterwards.

Y: This one is also in plain sight and comes right before the boss.
