Part nostalgia-bomb, part note-taking and part FAQ, what started in GameTrailers as a video game blog is now on Blogger. This blog is a look back at video games, both popular and obscure, from the video game industry's infancy all the way to the previous console generation.
Here we are at the concert...but getting in isn't going to be easy!
GWAR Concert
Aside from the punk girls and the skateboard kids, you're also going to have to deal with security officers who jump from one side of the screen to the other and shoot lightning bolts at you with their tasers. You'll eventually be able to go through one of the turnstiles in the background and enter the next section.
Grab the toy guns as you avoid the skateboard kids and the angry burger flippers. There are also the Butt Fighter and Spaceroid machines if you want to play them one last time. Shoot down the security officers as they come out of the entryways in the background.
You'll eventually be behind the huge crowd of people enjoying the GWAR concert. There are two bats here, but if you've conserved your ammo from the last section, save the toy gun and use it against the enemies here. There will be a few falling objects near the end (a falling monitor and a falling lighting rig), but they're easily avoidable.
You'll finally be on stage. The explosions, when touched, turn into the guitarist from GWAR. Shoot down the security officers in this auto-scrolling section. When you meet the lead singer, you've reached the end of the game! Congrats!
It's now time to head to the mall, and the cheekiness - pun somewhat intended - of the animated series is in full swing.
Turbo Mall 2000
Aside from the old ladies and dogs from the streets, you'll also be dealing with security guards and falling bags of groceries. If there's a grocery here, it's obviously not here in-game. Some of the falling bags will contain foods that will pop up out and refill some of your health if you can get them into your mouth.
Enter the pet store. You've obviously picked up the bat at the beginning of the stage, but you might want to give the other one to your other character for just in case. Stewart will give you a pizza you can eat if you can hit him. Also, don't let the snakes peeking out of the cages bite you.
You'll eventually come across the humongous fish tank and take a dive. It's about to become the worst dive in the world, as the tank is full of piranhas, jellyfish and other aquatic menaces that want you dead. There's also an extra life at the end of the tank.
When you exit the pet store, you'll be dealing with more snakes that are hanging out in the trees in the background. You'll also see even more enemies: chain-wielding punks and...Earl. Yep, Todd's gangster friend is back, too, and he throws baseballs at you. Use your leg throw to get over and behind him, then whack him repeatedly with the bat.
There are also some pay phones that you can check for coins. Be sure to do that, since you'll need them for the vending machines more than ever.
Take the elevator (and enjoy the brief elevator muzak), then continue on until you reach the pogo sticks. At this point, you'll have ditched the baseball bats for these things. Squish the ants with the pogo sticks by jumping onto them. They squish pretty well, so you'll know you did it right when that happens. They can damage you, though, so be careful. You'll eventually ditch the pogo sticks before taking another elevator ride up to the next floor. From there, grab the bat and enter the hallway in the background.
The next section is auto-scrolling, and has you pushing Beavis in a shopping cart as he shoots everyone with a super soaker. This is much like the hospital gurney parts from the last stage, but you'll also see falling grocery bags and falling plants. Be sure to jump over the plants that are on the floor, too. The worst of the obstacles is the green security guard that follows you from behind, so you'll have to avoid him as you trek towards the arcade.
You can play some of the games in the arcade. Butt Fighter is playable in either one-player or two-player mode, but Spaceroid is two-player only. Be sure to check the change machines and games for coins, and refill your health at the vending machines if you need to.
You'll be riding around on pogo sticks again. Avoid the security guards, then impale the ants. At the end, you'll ditch the pogo sticks one more time and face Billy Bob. This time, you'll have the bats with you as soon as you start the next section.
Also, I thought Beavis and Butt-Head mooning us when searching vending machines was stupid. When they land on the ground with the pogo sticks, they start sagging again. Even better, you can see the side of Beavis's ass. How did this get past Nintendo?
Billy Bob will keep butt-slamming the ground, causing pots to fall from the top of the screen, and he will also swing the huge sausage in his hand at you. Seriously, it's a real sausage you can buy at the supermarket. I'm not sure if it's a giant kielbasa or anything, but I wish I was making this stuff up or making a phallic reference. Just avoid him and the falling objects as you keep on whacking him, and you should be fine.
Oh, the damage you'll cause a hospital, just to be cool. I'm also under the believe that everyone in Highland hates these two guys.
Highland Hospital
Enter the door to your left at the start, and check the pay phones to find a nice treasure trove of coins. You'll also be able to get two fire extinguishers as well as an extra life, which is indicated by Butt-Head's head around a yellow, comic-book-like "POW!" bubble.
Use the fire extinguishers to take care of the doctors, who will walk towards you and hit you with a wooden mallet with no clear explanation as to why. Also, some doctors will push hospital gurneys at you from the double doors in the background. Be sure to jump over the buckets, too.
Enter the elevator at the end to enter the second section. Here, you'll be pushing Beavis on a gurney, who has a spray bottle full of plasma (or something like it) that you can squirt at the enemies. You can get more ammo by grabbing the bags that swing back and forth on the IV drip stands. The X-Ray machines you'll pass through are there just for humor.
The next section has you jumping from the top of one set of lights to the other. Don't stay in one spot too long, or you'll be ripped to shreds by the surgeons below and lose some of your energy.
In the fourth section, jump over the buckets as you slide to the right on the wet floors, and take out the plumbers when you see them. Duck under them if they swing their plungers at you.
After entering the elevator at the end, you'll have another gurney-pushing section. This time around, you'll have to avoid Todd, who is now coming after you on a wheelchair to swing a wrench at your head, seeing as that you broke both of his ankles from the boss fight at the high school.
The boss here is some angry nurse who tries to attack you by leaping towards you and smacking you with the side of her ass. You'll be able to grab a baseball bat with a boxing glove before the match, so use that and keep your distance.
Along with the skateboard kids from the last stage, you'll also have to deal with old ladies and dogs.
Let both Beavis and Butt-Head pick up a bat, so one of your characters don't go unarmed. If the old ladies swing their canes at you, keep ducking until they go away. If they're pushing a shopping cart, whack the shopping cart with the bat to get them to run off. As for the dogs, whack them as soon as they run at you.
If you see any stray shopping carts rolling towards you, hit them with the bat as well. As for the birds, duck down so they don't divebomb you, and avoid their poop. Yeah, even the birds want you dead. Did somebody pee in everything's corn flakes today, much less everyone's?
When you're near a fence, keep an ear open for the dog barking. It won't be much further after where you hear it that a dog will bust out of the fence and come at you, so be ready to bash it with the bat when it appears.
You'll be on the grass about halfway through. If you see any rakes on the ground (as opposed to the background), jump over them so you don't get whacked by the handles.
The game will make you ditch the bats before you enter the second section, where you're jumping from one clothesline to another while avoiding both pit bulls and poodles. As long as the character you're controlling isn't the one falling down, you should be good. If you're on two-player mode, that actually shouldn't be much of a problem. Just keep in mind that you're both sharing an energy meter.
Once you're over that fence, you'll be able to roam the streets again with a baseball bat in each character's hands. Get the bat, and be ready to take out toddlers on tricycles and manhole covers. You'll also be jumping over geysers of water again. Just remember that the water after the first geyser makes you slide to the right a little bit when you land on it.
The fourth section is the same as the second section, except you'll be able to whack the dogs with the bat this time around...and the birds! Yep, those birds finally got what was coming to them after they pooped on us!
The fifth section is back to the neighborhood grind, but we have to fight Mr. Anderson. You'll ditch the bats in favor of apples. Pick up the apples that don't disappear when they come out of his land on the ground. Another easy battle.
Beavis and Butthead are not role models. They're not even human. They're cartoons. Some of the things they do would cause a real person to get hurt, expelled, arrested, possibly deported. To put it another way: don't try this at home.
There were several versions of this game, and despite the plot, they were all pretty different from one another. This one covers the Super Nintendo version.
Beavis and Butt-Head find out that GWAR is coming to Highland! Of course, being the addled numbskulls that they are, they decide to do "cool" things and photograph proof of it as a way of getting in free. Will it work? Let's find out.
Highland High School
Pick up the toy gun by walking up to it and pressing Down on the Control Pad. You'll get the gun as well as fifteen balls' worth of ammo. From there, you should be able to shoot at enemies such as the kids on the skateboards as well as Todd, the guy with the long blonde hair and sunglasses. Avoid the basketballs that come out of the lockers he kicks open. You can also use the leg throw (A button) to send the character you're not playing as to launch him towards Todd and hit him, ending his reign of terror temporarily. You'll seem him more through the stage, though.
Be sure to check the vending machines and pay phones in the school with Up on the Control Pad. You may just luck out and find something, especially if you use both characters.
Speaking of which, if you press Down near the can of soda, you can refill a little bit of your health. Food usually replaces a small amount of health, so don't get hit too much.
If you press L (or Y, if you don't have any weapons), Beavis and Butt-Head will...well...be Beavis and Butt-Head. If they're both near each other, one will slap the other.
Some of the lockers will come down before you walk into them, so stop in your tracks when that happens. You can then walk over the lockers.
For the second section, you'll be in the cafeteria. Pick up the bat with the character you haven't used yet, and use it take out the students throwing food at you. The fat ones just take one hit, while others take multiple hits to get rid of. If you hit Daria, you'll be able to get some pizza that refills your health. Catch it by using the Up button so it lands in your character's mouth. Avoid the burger patties being thrown by the lunch workers at the lunch counters. Hit Up when you reach the double doors.
For the third section, you'll be using the gun again. You'll also get a new enemies: Principal McVickar. Whenever you see him, the skateboard kids or Todd, shoot at them with the gun.
The fourth section is the gymnasium. Beavis will be on top of Butt-Head with the bat with the boxing glove in his hands, swinging at whatever comes their way. You'll be like this the whole section. Not only can you whack people and basketballs with the bat, you'll also be able to fight Todd, who is sitting on top of Earl with a wrench in his hand. Whenever you see him, hit him with the bat or by sending a basketball at them with the bat. You'll still have to deal with the skateboard kids, but if you've been knocking the basketballs forward with the bat, they aren't a problem.
Remember, in case you can't hit a basketball in time, you can hold Up to block them so they won't hit you in the head.
The fifth section is the gym locker room. Use the leg-throw to get past the guys snapping the towels at you (or hit them in the legs with the bat and run past with the X Button), as well as the gym showers pouring hot water down. You can turn the showers off with the switch at the other end. Just press Up when near them to activate them.
Mr. Buzzcut also shows up as an enemy, and if he grabs you, he'll shake you up and down like a dusty floor rug. (He wasn't this violent in the show. C'mon, game.) Go through the door, search the phone with Beavis to get a quarter, then head through the second door. Stewart will give you a piece of pizza if you need it.
Watch out for the exploding segments of the pipes in the background, as they can damage you when they explode. Use the leg throw to get past the toilets, which contain either alligators that snap at you or geysers that will damage you.
You'll soon be running around with Beavis on your shoulders after entering the next door. Once again, this is just like the fourth section, and this time you'll actually have to fight Todd and Earl. Just like before, smack the basketballs at them with your bat. If there aren't any onscreen, time your swings so they hit these guys when they come towards you in an attempt to hit you with the monkey wrench. This battle shouldn't take long.
Couch Fishing
After every level, you'll be able to go couch fishing. Move the hook so you catch the food and refill your health as the clock at the bottom counts down. Don't catch old people or the dog or else your couch fishing game will prematurely end.
Welp, the moment we've waited for has arrived! We see a whole bunch of birds, hunt down the ignition key and get out of this awful zoo!
The enemies you'll see at the start - the grenadier bird, the vultures and the flying squirrel - are either indestructible or easy to avoid. Go ahead and avoid them.
You'll see a springboard at the end. Leap off of it and you'll take to the skies on a butterfly, which makes it officially known that this game has completely stopped making sense.
Aside from the enemies you've seen, you'll also see missiles, eagles with jetfighter helmets, hummingbirds, and that stupid dog in a man-made flying machine that looks like a bird. If you expected this to be a horizontal shmup and get better from here, you're sadly mistaken: you have to avoid everything. Bonus style points if you can time everything so that the grenadier birds hit an enemy with their bombs.
The music here sounds like it could have been made for a Konami game. The only thing is, if Konami actually composed it, it'd sound far better than this.
After a few more missile salvos, you'll finally face off against Mean Eugene in his helicopter. You'll have to time it so that the grenadier bird drops a bomb on you, only for you to fly away and have it land on Mean Eugene's helicopter instead. Avoid both Eugene and the missiles he shoots at you, and time the grenadier bird bomb drops right, and you should be fine. After you get the ignition key, you'll beat the game. I'd tell you that you did it, as always, but even then the ending leaves a lingering feeling of "Oh, Jesus Christ, why did I play this?" long after you get kicked back to the title screen.
Good show, amigo!
You are one righteous guide.
Like, my bike is ready to trip a ride on the wild side.
Four Corners Zoo can eat my dust.
Now it's Hip City or bust
Like this adventure has only one equal.
Look for me in Hip City, USA ... the sequel!
...and yet you still can't proofread whatever it is you try to tell me, game. That's too bad. But there really is a sequel, and we'll check it out in due time! Stay tuned!
Two videos in, and we're already close to the end of the game. Excellent.
Stage-3
Gator Alley
You're totally shrewd, dude. Now that you're on a roll, let's rally in Gator Alley. We've gotta get a grip on some hip handlebars.
Oh, and the sky's not supposed to be black. It's actually a yellow-orangish sunset.
You'll see that stupid dog wearing a duck hat swimming to the left shortly after the beginning. You're not fooling anybody, buddy.
The snails go down in one hit, but the green worms with the mohawks are indestructible. Sure, you can jump on them to slow them down, but just like the Dry Bones from the Mario games, it's not for long.
The ants with the balloons and crossbows will swoop down at you, but if you avoid them and jump on the balloon, you'll take them out and get the opportunity to recover two hits for your health bar.
The gators that point their nose upwards and chomp are platforms, but they are very, very touchy to land on. If you're not dead center on the nose, you will either take a hit from the gator's teeth or fall into the water near their eyes.
After the third gator, a hip-hop hippo will pop out of the water and serve as your ride across the water. You'll deal with two of those balloon ants, but the main enemy here is the guitar. If you grab it, you'll be dunked in the water sent back to the third gator, and there's nothing you can do about it. Wait until the guitar is directly over the hippo's head and is approaching his left hand, then jump over it. You'll be able to leap to the hippo's right hand and avoid the guitar altogether.
After some isolated planks on the piers you're walking on (which look a lot like prunes lined up on a slingshot), you'll see the sunglasses. This is the only way to get the skateboard for the bonus level, and this is how you get it: crawl underneath the sunglasses by going diagonal on the D-Pad, then go through the level as normal. Take out the two balloon ants, because this will make it much easier. Be careful with the logs, as they sink into the water and send you back to the left where the logs begin. Once you've taken the ants out, go back to the left and get the sunglasses. Time your jumps and get to the pier on the right in time and you'll be able to get the skateboard. You will have to jump off the right edge of the fourth and last log to get to the pier, as the game will not let you land on the very edge of that pier.
No sooner do you get past the log platforms does that stupid dog shoot bombs at you from a submarine. Move past him, keep going to the right, and you'll reach another pier after another set of logs. You'll see Eugene and the dog on a motorboat, followed by an empty boat that awaits you. Jump onto the boat. If you walk onto it, you'll end up going into the water for no reason.
Avoid the logs and pay close attention to the bottom of the screen. It's the only way to keep from being confused as all hell from the parallax scrolling here, which just makes everything a visual mess at this point. Collect as many coins as you can, too. When you see the handlebars, grab them. You'll be invincible when you get them, and you'll clear the stage...all without having to deal without Mean Eugene, his dog, and those bombs.
Stage-4
Hidden Caves
Later, gator. It's time to rock! If you're hip and brave enough, check out these hidden caves and stuff.Obstacles in the dark lurk out of sight, so get your paws on a major light.
No, now is the time to learn how to use the Space Bar.
The cave isn't supposed to be that lit up. Instead, you only have a limited amount of vision for this stage. Thankfully, enemies don't show up unless you're close to them, so you're going to know how it feels when it comes to playing this game for real.
The small bats don't hurt you, but they do latch on and can be kinda annoying. They'll latch off after you jump around a little while. If more than one latches on, you'll be slowed down severely. You do want to avoid the big bats, though, and bop them when necessary.
The pig men can be jumped on in order to stun them, while the guys on pogo sticks can be carefully jumped on in order to stop their rambunctious reign of terror. With the pig men, they'll wait until rocks drop down to them, so they can punch them at you. Be sure to avoid the rocks as well.
After a long drop and a lot of coins you can collect courtesy of the sunglasses, you'll be able to get onto a mine cart and ride down a mine shaft. The screen rotates as you duck under stalactites and collect coins and health replenishments.
After this part, you'll go up against Mene Eugene's train. Wait for the dog to throw three rocks and duck down to ensure you don't get hit as you stay close, then jump on the dog. After enough hits, the engine will show up in place of the dog. Grab it, and you'll get out of here.
Stage-5
Bird Houses
Whoa! You're quick, courageous and totally outrageous!
The only challenge left for me is to hit the bird houses and hawk the ignition key.
We'll do this next time...right after this wiseguy learns when not to double-space in an informal style of writing.
I've actually played through this one. I kid you not. Welcome to the wonderful world of advergames, where things get games...sometimes when they shouldn't...and in some cases, they shouldn't have a game in the first place. This fits in the latter category.
This guide covers the Super Nintendo version. The Sega Genesis version is the same, but has a different title screen and some things look different.
Chester Cheetah, here !
I'm righteous kitty from the heart of Hip City.
But right now I'm being held against my will in Four Corners Zoo like, Squaresville
I just don't dig this bogus gig.
Stage-1
Four Corners Zoo Park
Yo,friend! It's time to split this den. With Mene Eugene on the scene, this adeventure is no lark in the park. But help me find the missing tire and we can go a level higher.
When a Japanese developer makes an America-only game that doubles as an ad for your 16-bit gaming console, nothing good can come of it.
When the game begins, Chester Cheetah will be lying on a park bench only to see Mean Eugene and his dog running away with Chester's scooter. According to the story in the instruction manual, Eugene has dismantled the scooter and spread the pieces throughout the town to make it harder for Chester to escape his grasp.
The first enemy you'll see are the turtles. You can only hit them when they expose their heads and propel themselves forwards on roller skates. The springs can be jumped on more easily and can be used to grab some of the items you can't reach with a normal jump.
Jumping on some enemies of the game is a real balancing act, as the hitboxes on are very, very stringent. You have to leap dead center on them. If you jump into them a few pixels to the side, you're taking a hit.
The purple circles with the orange pawprints act like coins. They just give you 10 bonus points for each one you get when you complete a stage. You only have one life in this game and limited continues in this game, so you'd better try your best not to die. (I'll call these "coins" so as not to confuse them with the paw prints that refill your health.) You can get a continue (or "credit") from collecting 100, but that's assuming you make it to the exit with 100 or more.
The big orange paw prints will refill one hit point on your health.
Jump on the steamroller four times to completely destroy it. Be sure to use the bounceback from jumping onto the steamroller to get the coins that you can't rach with your jump if you want.
You'll see manholes every so often. You can go down them to find more pawprints, and you'll need to utilize them in order to find the tires for the scooter. Stand still and press Up to go up the vertical pipes, and just stand still on them when you're at the top to go down automatically. Press B repeatedly and you'll be able to crawl through the pipes faster.
The guitar makes Chester invincible, but in reality it is one of the worst power-ups I have ever seen in my life, let alone the entire game. You can't control Chester while he's playing it...at all.
The sneakers allow Chester to run by pressing the R button. You have to hold the direction you want to run in conjuction with pressing R, which is a real pain in the ass. Buster Busts Loose did this better, believe it or not.
The sunglasses make the screen a darker tint, but they also allow you to see power-ups that you wouldn't be able to see or collect without them. They don't last too long, though, so you'd better grab stuff while you can!
The streams will damage you, as will the fish that jump in and out of them. If the fish touch you, they'll latch on to you for a little while.
Midway through the stage, you'll see the dog on some spider-like machine with four legs. There's no real way to defeat it, instead just get to the other side by waiting for the legs to lift themselves off of the ground. They always do this in a clockwise fashion from the right-most leg to the leg in the center that's nearly obscured. Duck when the "body" lowers so you don't get squashed, then use your newfound dashing ability to get to the other side of the screen when you get to the right leg. It not only helps you get to the other side faster, it actually keeps you from being nicked in the chin by the foot of the right-most leg. The hit boxes, once again, become stringent in the most needless way possible.
The manhole with the arrow made out of paw prints pointing downward leads to the tires. Get them, then head to the exit.
When you beat the level, you'll get bonus points on how many coins you picked up. If you went through the level with all the coins collected, you'll get a perfect bonus. You'll then see how much of the scooter has been rebuilt.
Stage-2
Monkey Pits
The music here is great. The level itself is not.
Like congrats. After that awesome showing, you best keep on going. Let's give Mean Eugene fits and ditch him in the monkey pits. Swing from vine to vine and grab the sunglasses this
Yeah, it doesn't even finish the sentence like it should. We also have lack of spacing between punctuation and the beginning of new sentences save for one case in the entire message. It's like whoever developed this didn't even try.
Since we're on that subject, let's talk about the ropes. They are yet another example of something that has been done better by other games. If you let go of the B button, you let go of the rope. That's strike one right there. You have to rock the D-Pad left and right to swing. Going back to Mickey Mania: remember the chandeliers at the beginning of the final level? That was better than this. Three, once you've swung far enough like a pendulum on crack, letting go of the B button lets you catapult yourself into the air. This almost makes the first strike both forgivable and removable, but once again, this was done better in Donkey Kong Country. You could even better control your jump. Strike three. Oh, and the fact that Chester wears a Tarzan-like robe does not, repeat, does not make this any more enjoyable.
The coins will be clustered around in the shape of arrows to point out where you should go next.
The hedgehogs roll around like a buzzsaw when they see you and can be jumped on. The wolves with silverware look like they can't be killed by any other means than the guitar, but you can actually jump on them to kill them. They do have a slight hop forward that they'll use if they see you, so watch out. The kangaroos with boxing gloves can shoot out small, sparkly purple stars that will instantly kill you. Even if you're hit, you have no invincibility until you hit the ground, so you can be hit multiple times in the air and get killed in two seconds even with a full health bar. The kangaroo can also punch the trees and cause bugs to fall from the top of the screen, which can damage you to the touch.
The little purple guys that hang on the sides of the trees hurt you if you touch them. This is honestly one of the most bullcrap moves I've seen a game pull in my life, since they don't do anything and seem like they're part of the scenery.
When you make your way to the bottom at the beginning, you'll eventually meet a monkey. This monkey will follow you throughout the level. Amazingly, even if you off-screen him, he doesn't seem to have much trouble keeping up.
Down-Left and Down-Right on the D-Pad lets Chester crawl when held.
You'll have to find the sneakers again in order to dash. Whenever you beat a level, you lose whatever power-ups you had in your possession when you enter the next.
If you run into a tree during a vine swing, you'll crash into it like George of the Jungle. Well, that kinda helps.
You can jump into the vines to climb them, but you're better off jumping straight up and using the Control Pad along with it in order to climb up faster, as Chester's climbing ability is unbelievably slow. You'll still have to hold Up on the D-Pad near the top to keep from hitting your head on the bottom of the tree branches.
When you make it close to the end, the monkey will automatically climb up the tree and get the scooter part. Unless you have the monkey, you'll have to go all the way back to the bottom of the level and look for him. Once you have the scooter part, you can go to the right and get out of here. (The part here is the frame. Thanks for asking.)
If you jumped far enough off of the first rope in the level, you can get the skateboard. This takes you to the bonus stage, where Chester Cheetah rides a skateboard in Hip City. If you can collect all the coins, you'll be able to get a perfect bonus in addition to the points the coins give you. You can jump off the tops of the steamrollers, but don't run into them, or else you'll lose coins!
