PrinceWatercress plays The Revenge of Shinobi - The Longplay

Enjoy!

PrinceWatercress plays The Revenge of Shinobi - Part 8 of 8

We've made it to the end of the game...but getting the ending you want is anything but easy! Are you crafty and good enough to beat the bad guy AND save the girl in the game's thrilling conclusion?

Round 8

In the first section, you'll be avoiding falling into the water again. The turrets that shoot fireballs can be stood on, but not destroyed. You'll have to carefully use them to get to where you need to go. Aside from the solders, the rope guys are back, and they take three hits to kill! The bomb throwing soldiers are the worst, as they can throw bombs at you from off-screen and the bombs can knock you right into the drink, resulting in instant death.

The second section is a maze. Here, go to the right and jump over the door with the "O" on it. Duck wall through the partition on the right and the enter the door in the nook. Destroy the flamethrower guy to the right, then enter the door on the right. When you enter this door, continue to hold Right on the D-Pad so you aren't forced to start this whole maze over. Jump past the door to the left of the rope guy and go right, then duck walk to the left into the darkened area that you see. Break the boxes you find here by attacking up close to avoid wasting shurikens, and you'll have access to a ton of power-ups. Double-jump to get out of this area, then make your way upwards and follow the path all the way to the door at the end.

Take care of the two enemies, then double jump over the wall and drop down. As you drop down, continue to hold Right on the D-Pad. Enter the door on the right. Take out both ninjas and get the POW icons, then duck-walk left and take out the soldiers on the way. Enter the first door that you see while going left. Use the Jitsu of Izakuchi and head left while destroying the enemies and enter the lower door on the left end of the room. You're at the exit. Face left, jump up and throw a shuriken to find a POW icon if you need, then get out of here.

You're now facing the final boss, some Kabuki guy who is the leader of Neo Zeed. Switch to Mijin before the battle, then go to the left side of the room and throw some shurikens at the black space in the wall. This stops the crushing stone ceiling inside the cell containing your girlfriend Naoko for a few seconds, and if she gets crushed before you beat the boss, you'll get the bad ending, so you'll not only have to beat the boss, but you'll also have to watch the ceiling in the background as well! Duck down next to the boss and throw a shuriken (or use your melee attack) when he strikes at you with his hair, then immediately get away from him and double jump so his hair doesn't hit you when he throws it at you. If you run low on health, use Mijin to refill it at the cost of a life.

If Naoko is still standing when you beat the boss, you get the good ending. If not, you get the bad ending instead. You've won!

PrinceWatercress plays The Revenge of Shinobi - Part 7 of 8

We're almost at the end of the game. We make our way into a weapons factory, then take on a giant dinosaur skeleton.

Round 7

In the first section, you're on the docks. The water is a bottomless pit, so don't fall in, especially when trying to land on the rafts in the water. You may have to double jump and throw multiple shurikens at once to take care of enemies during jumps. Near the end, there is one jump that you'll have to be on the very edge of in order to double jump to the other side, and you may have to use Fushin to nail the jump, too.

The second section takes place in a weapons factory. The missile transporters will hurt you if you run into the sides of them, and the soldiers from past stages will not only be numerous, but also more strategically placed. When you reach the end, take care not to stand on the glowing red floors; they will hurt you.

The boss here is a giant dinosaur (which looked like Godzilla in earlier versions; it's a dinosaur skeleton here). Use the Jitsu of Ikazuchi at the beginning and try to avoid the fireballs by staying both on and underneath the platform at the left side of the room as you throw shurikens at this thing's face. When it gets right next to the platform, jump up to the platform to avoid the tail whip, then throw a shuriken at the boss' face when it comes to a complete stop after it turns around. After that, immediately drop down with Down and C to avoid being hit with a fireball when you see its insides flash white. At this point, this pattern will just keep going, and you'll eventually take this thing down if your timing is good enough.

Welcome to Chinatown. After fighting a ton of martial artists, you'll be taking the subway before fighting a familiar super-hero...

Round 6

In the first section, you'll be going up and down and all around as you go through town. Besides the palette swaps of the martial artists from Round 2 who take two hits to kill, you'll also have the guys who twirl a rope around. After about ten rotations, they either strike high or strike low, then alternate between the two elevations, and you'll have to be ready to throw a shuriken that won't be blocked by the rope. You also have dances who will leap at you and block your shurikens with their kicks. If you need to go down, don't forget that you can hold Down on the D-Pad and press the Jump button to leap downwards.

At the traffic light, use Fuujin. If you strike the wall to the right of the traffic light, you'll get an extra ninjutsu use, and if you go left on the light, you can find an extra life.

In the second section, you'll take the subway, but you'll be on the top of the cars, not inside them. Watch out for the orange things that fly out from the right; those are steel beams that will hit you if you don't jump over them. Ducking under them is not recommended; you'll get hit more likely than not. You'll have to deal with ninjas, too.

You'll eventually come out of the tunnel, and the ninjas will be a bit more numerous and tend to blend in with the background. Some will drop from the top of the screen. When you see the six boxes side-by-side, break the fourth one; you'll find a large health pick-up.

The boss is a two-parter. First, you'll fight Spider-Man. Jump up to hit Spider-Man, and stay away from the webs. They do a little bit of damage, and if you get caught in them, rotate the Control Pad and press buttons to get out.

Once you get enough hits in on Spider-Man, you'll then face some horned man-bat thing. In earlier versions of the game, it was Batman, but this boss was changed due to copyright. Throw shurikens at this boss and duck under the diving attack, and if you can destroy the bats, do it. When this boss raises his arms and moves upwards, be ready to double-jump when he dives at you from the side of the screen. After that dive, duck to avoid another one. You'll then be able to fight him again, and if you know what you're doing, Round 6 is done.

PrinceWatercress plays The Revenge of Shinobi - Part 5 of 8

This was where the game got difficult as a kid. If you made it past here, you were getting to the crazier parts of the game.

Round 5

The first section is a vertical stage where you jump your way up a skyscraper. Use the Jitsu of Fuujin and double jump your way up while avoiding soldiers, ninjas and laser cannons. If you keep to the right side of the stage, you'll make it a little easier to touch the exit and move on.

The second section takes place on the highway. You can walk on the walkway on the side of the bridge below, but you can also walk on the highway itself. If you do that, however, you'll not only be dealing with kunoichi assassins disguised as nuns, but also the traffic. For every two blue cars you see, you will see a red one, and if you don't jump over the red car, the red car will hit you. Just like in the first section of Round 3, you can double jump to switch between the two planes to get pas some highway arches and find some power-ups, but you'd better watch where you're jumping to or else you will fall into a pit.

The boss is a giant military vehicle. Wait for red domes to pop out of the vehicle as you advance, and attack them when they pop out. There will be sparks of electricity that will course along the vehicle; you will want to avoid those. There will be cannons that shoot fireballs as well. For the second red dome, crouch kick from the right side. For the third red dome, jump and throw shurikens while avoiding the sparks. When all three red domes are destroyed, you've beaten the boss.

PrinceWatercress plays The Revenge of Shinobi - Part 4 of 8

For some reason, I really like the junkyard here.

Round 4

The plane ride you took from the military has taken you from Japan to America.

The first section takes place in a junkyard. The enemies you'll meet here are the same as in the last round. Jump and shoot a shuriken to the right at the start take out a soldier, then jump on top of the first crushed car, face left, jump straight and shoot a shuriken at the top of your jump to get an extra ninjitsu icon. The flamethrower guy between the two car columns can be crouching kicked in the face from above if he is all the way to the left.

The second section is in a factory-like setting with tons of conveyor belts and falling platforms. Use the Jitsu of Fushin to make jumping easier. Try not to get crushed, burned by flame jets or fall into lava, and stand on top of moving hooks to get around. Using Jitsu of Fushin will make it much easier to get to the exit, since you can jump to the top of the stage with ease.

The boss is a very strong man who will throw cars at you. Take short hops and throw shurikens at the man's face about three or four times, then stand next to the nearby column of crushed metal and double jump to avoid the car he throws at you. He will also throw what looks like engine blocks at you that you can also easily double jump over to avoid, and if you get too close, he will squat down in a three-point stance before tackling you. Stay at a distance and take short hops while aiming shurikens at his head while avoiding the things he throws. It's a very easy boss battle. He will eventually explode and reveal he is a robot. Jump to the top to the column to avoid him and it's on to Round 5.

PrinceWatercress plays The Revenge of Shinobi - Part 3 of 8

We've landed in America...and now the enemies are quite a bit different.

Round 3

The first section takes place in an airport and has some of the best music in the game. Instead of ninjas and martial artists, however, you now have military forces to deal with. The dogs are the same as ever, but you now have guys standing - or lying - in place shooting machine guns or throwing bombs at you. The bombs can only hit you on the way down, and their explosions can also hurt you. Other soldiers will be carrying flamethrowers and shooting at you from a shorter distance, but they are also mobile and will walk towards you. If you need to avoid some enemies, you can always double jump to leap over the fence and switch between the background and the foreground. There are two ninjitsu icons in the first section: one in a box on a brick column and at the top of the screen near the exit. If you strike at the right side of the big steel box near the first ninjitsu pick-up, you can find a large heart. The second ninjitsu icon can be found by standing on the last brick column in the stage and shooting to the right.

The second section takes place in a plane. You'll have the same soldiers as last time, but you'll be in tighter spaces as you fight them. The background doors that open and close at regular intervals will suck you out of the plane if you walk into them, so always double jump clear over them. There are also elevator platforms that take you up and down in the level.

To beat the boss, stay on the movie to avoid being shot at by the laser cannon above, and when the metal cylinder on the right opens up, jump up and shoot the glass casing with the brain inside it with a shuriken. It will close up. You'll have to keep this going until you destroy the brain's housing and cause the metal cylinder to explode. You can use Jitsu of Karyu if the brain is green to end the battle early.

You'll get an extra two units of health every 100,000 points, and those two extra health units can really help.

PrinceWatercress plays The Revenge of Shinobi - Part 2 of 8

Round 2 will put your platform skills to the test.

Round 2

In the first section, you'll be traversing a waterfall by jumping on rocks as well as logs that tumble down the waterfall. Don't forget to use Jitsu of Fushin when you start the level to make jumping easier before getting down to the rockin' music, and remember that Round 2 is a round of bottomless pits. Also, watch out for ninjas; they'll either be standing strategically in some spots ready to throw shurikens, or they'll be flying around on what looks like bat wings in an attempt to make getting around harder.

In the second section, you'll be in the city. There will be not only ninjas but also martial artists and assassins, Stay at the rooftops to avoid the non-ninja enemies. If you run into the martial artists, keep your distance and hit them from there; their attacks will block your shurikens. As for the assassins, they are on the ground only and they are disguised as nuns; when they pass you, they will reveal themselves and start jumping around. A shuriken or two will defeat them. Don't forget to throw shurikens around at the end of this section to find an extra ninjitsu charge.

The boss is a powerful ninja. Watch where he jumps, and try to hit him in close with crouching kicks for as long as you can. You may get hit a few times and you may lose your attack power-up due to the shurikens being hard to see thanks to the lights of the discotheque, but he'll go down long before you do. If you need to, use the Jitsu of Ikazuchi to tank a few hits.

PrinceWatercress plays The Revenge of Shinobi - Part 1 of 8

It's been three years since Shinobi. You are Joe Musashi. Your master is dead. Your fiancee Naoko is kidnapped. Zeed is back as Neo Zeed and is deadlier than ever, and it wants to destroy the ninja. It's time to take them down again, get your bride back and set things straight.

Left and Right let you move, and Down-Left and Down-Right lets you do a duck walk. A activates your ninjutsu, B lets you throw shurikens (or attack with a melee weapon in case you run out) and C lets you jump. Pressing C in mid-air lets you double jump, which you can only do at the height of your jump (you won't be able to do it while you're falling down). If you attack during your double jump, you'll throw out eight shurikens at once. Ikazuchi gives you a shield that protects you from a few hits; Karyu spawns four columns of fire that destroy all on-screen enemies and weakens bosses; Fushin increases the height of your jumps; and Mijin is a smart bomb that kills all enemies and damages bosses at the cost of one of your lives. (If you use Mijin on your last life, you will blow up and give yourself a game over. Don't do that.)

The HUD at the top of the screen shows how much health you have, how many shurikens you have, your four ninjutsu choices and the amount of lives you have left. To select between ninjutsu, pause the game and use the D-Pad to switch between the four ninjutsu.

Round 1

In the first section, you'll learn how to fight enemies. Ninjas will appear out of nowhere and somersault and throw shurikens when you get too close. They go down in one hit. The samurai will block your shurikens, but if you throw a shuriken and duck down, it won't hit their sword and you'll do damage. They are also vulnerable if they manage to swing their sword without hitting you. If you duck when they get in close, you'll make it happen.

Power-ups are in wooden boxes. The single shuriken icon gives you ten shurikens, while the double shuriken icon gives you twenty. The POW icon gives you flaming shurikens, and your melee attack will be your sword instead of your kunai. If you are walking forward after collecting a POW icon, you can block projectiles that come towards your head when and only when you are walking towards them. You'll lose your power upgrade if you get hit, though. Small hearts refill a little bit of your health, while big hearts refill all of it. The portrait of Mushashi with "1-Up" on it gives you an extra life. The Japanese symbol gives you an extra use of ninjitsu. Watch out, though: there are gray and brown time bombs that blow up when you either get too close or leave them sitting out in the open for a few seconds.

The dogs will rush at you. When you see one, duck and throw a shuriken. If you get hit or miss due to the dog jumping at you, turn around and try again.

In the second section, you'll be in a bit of a maze. Stand on the stones with the triangle at the bottom to open doors. The bamboo spikes are harmful to the touch, but they can do a lot of damage.

The underground route has two revolving doors that spawn ninjas; don't hang around them.

To beat the boss, take short hopes towards him and back away when he swings his sword. You'll then want to turn back towards him and hit him in the face. As you damage this evil samurai, his armor will change from dark blue to light purple. If you get the boss in the purple range and use Karyu, you'll defeat him early.

The Genesis 6-Pak

Here's some footage for the 6-Pak for Sega Genesis, which includes Streets of Rage. This was packed in with the Model 2 Sega Genesis, and I definitely got this one with mine.
