PrinceWatercress plays Wolfchild (Super NES) - Stage 1 of 5

This platformer by Core Design was on a few systems from the Master System and Game Gear to the Mega Drive and Super Nintendo to the 16-bit micros. You'd think would be better remembered.

You are Saul Morrow. Your father, biotechnology researcher Kal Morrow, has been kidnapped, and your mother and younger brother have both been brutally murdered. You are the only survivor of the kidnapping, which has been carried out by the evil organization known as Chimera.

Saul Morrow uses one of Kal Morrow's secret projects - codenamed "Wolfchild" - to alter his DNA and give himself the power to change into a werewolf and achieve the strength needed to destroy Chimera.

Stage 1: Wolf Ship

Controls are pretty simple. Left and Right on the Control Pad let you move around, and Down on the Control Pad lets you crouch. Holding Down on a sloped surface will let you slide down the slope, so be careful. B lets you jump, Y lets you attack, X lets you select weapons and A lets you use a screen-clearing smart bomb. (This is assuming you are using the default controls, which can be change din the options menu.)

At the bottom, from left to right, is the amount of lives you have with the number of smart bombs you have underneath that, your energy meter with your score as well as the letters for "BONUS" and "EXTRA" underneath. To the right of all that is your current weapon as well as how much ammunition you have for the current weapon.

At the start, run to the right, and duck and punch in close when necessary.to defeat the soldiers without getting shot at.

The silver orbs give you points. They come in four sizes, and the bigger they are, the more they are worth. The smallest are worth 100 points and the biggest is worth 1,000.

The big lightning bolt icon will immediately refill your health meter regardless of how much energy you have, and grabbing it will also transform you into your werewolf form. The werewolf form creates projectiles whenever you punch, so you can fight enemies from a distance. Throughout the game, you will also find other health replenishment icons. The icon with one small lightning bolt replenishes one unit of health, while the icon with two small lightning bolts replenishes two.

When you reach the top of the first area, drop down so the big flames don't hit you. Time your jumps so you can jump over the barrels the soldier to the right rolls at you, and keep hitting him with projectiles at the top of your jump. Behind him will be the letter N for "BONUS." If you get all the letters for "BONUS," you'll get 20,000 points.

You'll then fight a soldier on a cannon that moves up and down and fires projectiles. This cannon has limited mobility, but its projectiles pack a punch. The crates here hide a full health power-up, but don't destroy both of them; instead, keep the one on the right around and use it for cover. The cannon waits high up, ducks down, goes back up, then fires high, lunges down and forward a little bit, hangs back and fires in the middle, then ducks down before hanging back again and firing low, and if you keep that crate around, it will protect you from the low shots for the duration of the fight. Once you get used to the movement pattern of the cannon, you'll be able to take it down in no time.

After this, you'll fight your first boss: an evil bird-man. Jump over the explosions, then go all the way to the right. Duck down, then roll your thumb from Down to Left on the Control Pad. This allows you to face the other direction without moving. From here, jump in the air and hit the birdman in the back with your attacks as it fails to turn around and shoots its three-way shot at nothing. Make sure it is not near the right side of the screen when you jump up and attack, or else you will be taking unnecessary damage. He does move away from the right side of the screen from time to time, allowing you some free shots, but you'll still be at the right side of the screen, facing left and jumping and shooting the whole battle. This boss will definitely go down without much of a struggle when you know what to do.
